I traveled on Tonle Sap in a very “basic” boat, and was fortunate to find a local boatman, who was able to take me close to shore and “beach” the boat several times so I could see life there as it really was. The family living here supplemented their income by raising pigs seen center foreground. Some were kept in very small crates, others allowed to walk freely in the space between houses. Some of the crates were constructed so they would float tethered to the main home when the lake waters rose to the level of the houses. Because of the change in water levels as the water flows in and out of the Mekong, the houses on the lake are built on stilts to allow for the 8-9 meter rise in the water level during the rainy season.

Droplets of sap on Nectarine Tree

A surprise find, but I believe there may be a breeding pair at Terra Cotta Conservation area! I was busy photographing warblers when suddenly I was surprised to hear a tapping sound, low and behold a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker enjoying some sap within close range! Tough lighting conditions (bright sun, harsh shadows) but you take what you can get!

Tonle Sap Lake, one of most productive fisheries in the world, is struggling to survive over-fishing and dam projects.

Walking around the edge of our meadow this morning I found a Pine dripping Sap. the sun was low, and the sap was sparkling!

Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its size fluctuates between 2,700 sq. km and 16,000 sq. km depending on the season.

It is part of the Mekong river system and functions as a detention basin as the water of the Mekong flows in during the rainy season thereby expanding its size and reducing the risk of flooding in the Mekong Delta that is now part of Vietnam.

The whole lake is designated as a Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO thanks to its high-level of biodiversity. It is surrounded by the flooded forests as you see in the photo, which inundate during the rainy season.

My first sighting, and there were 3! The sap from this shrub/tree is very appealing. butterflies, bee, hornets, wasps, ants and a variety of other insect will feed on it.

Sap flows through a portion of the outer tree trunk called sapwood. Sapwood consists of actively growing cells that conduct water and nutrients (sap) from the roots to the branches of the tree. During the day, activity in the cells of sapwood produces carbon dioxide.

The internet is such a source of trivia :)

These metal buckets are collecting sap from maple trees that will be turned into maple syrup by boiling off most of the water in large vats. Buckets were the traditional way to do this but modern operations use plastic bags or use long collection tubes that empty into a common tank. Yesterday was Maine Sugar Sunday when over 100 producers invite the public to visit not only to purchase syrup or other maple products like candy, popcorn, and nuts (all are delicious) but to also view the production facilities. For children there were some special activities. This photo was taken a Goranson Farm in Dresden, Maine. For Werner.

Maine, at 2.2 million L (580,000 US gal), is the the third largest producer of maple syrup after Vermont and New York. The Canadian province of Quebec leads the world in maple syrup production. In 2019 the average price per gallon in the US was $31.

This bird is one of a few of its species wintering in our part of southern Ontario this season, outside of its typical winter range.

"E' difficile sapere come interpreterete quello che vi dico. Una cosa è certa: non sarà mai la stessa cosa di cui io sto parlando: io parlerò, ma ciò che sentirete dipenderà da voi. Io non posso farci niente." (Buddha)

This female Yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) was a day later but in the same vicinity as the other two woodies at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. It was a bright day so I added the 1.4 extender to the big lens. You can see all the holes around the trunk that provides sap for her. This is only the second time I've seen this species, we are on the edge of the non-breeding to migration range.

Smile On Saturday-One Single Drop (It resembles a Gum Drop)

I took this photo in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We had two Pinon Trees in our front yard and sometimes the sap would drop from the trees and land on the lower branches.

Whitefly (Aleyrodidae)

One from back in May that, for some reason, never got posted.

This is a fairly large adult, almost 2 mm in length

Some information about Whiteflies

Whiteflies are not 'flies' but are sap-sucking insects related to Aphids, Scale Insects and Mealybugs.
