It’s that time of year again. Where did the last year go. As always there is plenty to see at Ockham Common but the Bee Wolf population seems very thin so far. Hopefully this coming week that will change.
As always, a handheld shot of a live subject taken in the field while it goes about its normal business.

The S60 line and some REX services between Vienna and Bruck an der Leitha are currently replaced by buses, because of construction works. That's why on weekdays some of the remaining REX trains consist temporarily of three 4124 EMUs. The first part runs to Wulkaprodersdorf, the second to Pamhagen/Fertőszentmiklós and the third additionally to Bruck an der Leitha.
While trying to photograph some mining bees (Four Banded Flower Bees) I realised the area was full of these wonderful Bee Wolf Wasps ( Philanthus Triangulum). They prey on honey bees, capturing them for their young. This female is opening the entrance to her tunnel, the gruesome resting place of this bee. Inside will be a number of chambers. Before cleaning the stunned but still alive bee, she coats it in a preservative mix of bacteria and anti-fungal. The wasp will then lay an egg on each bee, one per chamber. When the egg hatches, the grub will feed on the still alive bee keeping it alive as long as possible by eating non vital parts first.
Even more surprising was to see rub-tailed wasps entering the tunnel when the female leaves. This wasp is a cuckoo wasp that consumes the larvae of the host, in this case the bee wolf. Astonishing to watch.
The four banded flower bees were not touched by the bee wolf, instead it seemed that it chased off other wasps so maybe they get some protection by nesting in the same area. Protection from anything apart from the dragon flies which took whatever they fancied including the huge ichneumon wasps that were also in the vicinity. Any insect parts left laying around were cleaned up by the numerous different ant species on patrol.

Android and iOS tend to be known as the big hitters when it comes to international mobile operating system markets, but recent stats paint a different picture of the SA mobile market. Going by install base figures, BlackBerry and Symbian S60 systems hold highest market shares in SA.
Strange but true Apple iPhone only hold 8% market share against Blackberry's 36%

Normally I wouldn't spot a S60, but with this front I was kind of suprised, i never saw it before.
Volvo recently started sales of the lastest generation of the S60. This is the first one I saw on the street. This one is powered by a 2.0 litre petrol engine.
What a machine! This 7.0 liter Corvette V8 powered Volvo S60 Silhouet spitting some flames during the second race of the Dutch Supercar Challenge at the Gamma Racing Day.
