known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, is a landlocked country located in the Great Lakes region of eastern-central Africa, bordered by Uganda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania.
Although close to the equator, the country has a cool temperate climate due to its high elevation. The terrain consists mostly of grassy uplands and gently rolling hills. Abundant wildlife, including rare mountain gorillas, have resulted in tourism becoming one of the biggest sectors of the country's economy.
Rwanda has received considerable international attention due to its 1994 genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 people were killed. Since then the country has made a recovery and is now considered as a model for developing countries. In 2009 a CNN report labeled Rwanda as Africa's biggest success story, having achieved stability, economic growth (average income has tripled in the past ten years) and international integration.The government is widely seen as one of the more efficient and honest ones in Africa. Fortune magazine published an article recently titled "Why CEOs Love Rwanda." The capital, Kigali, is the first city in Africa to be bestowed with the Habitat Scroll of Honor Award in the recognition of its "cleanliness, security and urban conservation model." In 2008, Rwanda became the first country to elect a national legislature in which a majority of members were women. Rwanda is, as of November 2009, a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, making the country one of only two in the Commonwealth without a British colonial past.

From the name of the people Vanyaruanda, a word of unknown origin, but obviously cognate to the name of Rwanda. Also known fondly as "Land of a Thousand Hills" (Pays des milles collines).
Description Flag:
The new flag of Rwanda was adopted on October 25, 2001.
The flag has four colours: blue, green, and two forms of yellow (standard yellow for the middle band and what the Pantone system calls "sun yellow" for the sun); the difference between the two yellows is barely noticeable.
The blue band represents happiness and peace, the yellow band symbolizes economic development, and the green band symbolizes the hope of prosperity. The sun represents enlightenment.

Coat of arms:
The current Coat of arms of Rwanda was restyled in 2001 to match the color scheme of the new national flag. The text reads "Republic of Rwanda-Unity, Work, Patriotism" in Kinyarwanda. The central tribal devices are surmounted on a cog wheel and encircled by a square knot.
The previous arms dated from the 1960s-the colors green, yellow and red represented peace; the nation's hope for future development; and the people. The arms and the flag itself were changed because they had become associated with the brutality of the Rwandan Genocide.

Rwanda is a beautiful , clean country . Its weather is wonderful, with many lakes and beautiful landscapes. Wherever you go you feel safe .
Picking tea in Rwanda. In a tea plantation, tea picking is done manually and only the young leaves are used. Tea pickers walk through the dense tea plants, choosing manually young leaves.
I took this photo with a telephoto lens to achieve a small depth of field and to compress the woman on the background. My goal was to convey the impression that she is completely surrounded by tea plants (which was the case).
Today is a Africa Day so I thought I'd post an image from Rwanda which is one absolutley beautiful country. I had the chance to take a tour from Kigali to the far west of the country near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Stunningly beautiful scenes like this were the norm. Although I am not a landscape specialist, I had to ask my driver to stop on a few occasions to capture the incredible beauty. Never forget to capture the overall beauty and essence of a nation even if it means shooting outside your primary area of interest or expertise.

This was a wacky dude I met at a club in Rwanda. He was very nice and invited me to his house where several musicians had an impromptu jam session. I had a great time. I asked if he would give me a Peace sign and this is what he gave me. Good enough wacky guy! BTW... This pic was taken inside the Hotel Rwanda, yes THE Hotel Rwanda, where I was staying
Nyungwe Forest National Park
Located in the South West corner of Rwanda, Nyungwe National Park is an untouched natural rainforest that is filled with exciting biodiversity.
Covering over 1000 square kilomtres, Nyungwe is surely one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. It’s believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests, staying green even through the Ice Age, which explains its diversity.
Most of Rwanda's inhabitants live on agriculture and livestock. Thus, almost all the land is cultivated, with the average property per household being less than a hectare.
The economy is based mostly on subsistence agriculture.
Our first night at Virunga Lodge (Volcanoes Safaris) in Rwanda, there were so many stars in the sky. I had never seen anything like it. I had to get up super early for a gorilla trek the next day, so I decided to set up my camera outside while I slept.
I set a 30-minute timer so I could finish getting ready for bed and not cast any excess light into the frame, and not wanting to completely drain the battery, I set the intervalometer for 120 photos at 30-seconds each. I only had two batteries, so draining one right before a who-knows-how-long hike wasn't my first choice.
Although not completely devoid of light pollution: fire, lanterns, and lightbulbs from villager's dwellings on the hills above Lake Burera, I think I got a pretty rad vertical trail. I'm sitting just under one degree from the equator, with my camera facing east, and I think that explains the very straight "top-bottom" pattern. Also, at only 120 frames, this isn't the most photos I've used to create a star trail, but the length of the trails looks much longer than images I've composed using roughly the same amount.

They have a dark coat and can be distinguished by a characteristic white beard.
The population is young and predominantly rural, with a density among the highest in Africa. Rwandans are drawn from just one cultural and linguistic group, the Banyarwanda, although within this group there are three subgroups: the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa.
The 2002 census was the first since 1933 which did not categorise Rwandan population into the three groups.
