hi all! i know in my last post i said that i was going to be better at staying in touch and whatnot...but...well...I suppose i shouldn't say those things because when you do...it's bound to get derailed.
right after the holidays (jan2) my sweet boy ruptured a disk in his neck leaving him paralyzed. After a trip to the animal er and a couple of days of steroids we picked him up (still unable to get up) and took him to my vet/breeder for her to work with him for a few days.
after a few days with her she was able to get him up w/a sling but pretty much had to hold all of his weight to get him up to potty.
we brought him home thinking the worst. we worked with him w/braces and slings and whatnot....pretty much picking him up every hour or two to take him to potty (which he had to do a lot because of the pred) for weeks....until one night (in very deep snow) the sling dropped and he started moving on his own ...(into the neighbors yard)!!! haha
That was the start of him getting around on his own.
He still is doing pretty well...considering.
he's very wobbly and occasionally will just fall over but he can get around slowly and very carefully on his own.
my baby is such a good boy!! we are down to two pred a week (every 4th day). it's been tough weaning him off of them.
i'm using an all natural form of pred (azmira's yucca ...found at 1800petmeds) on the off days....which seems to help him get thru.
he is 9...and i know what that means for dobermans. and this could happen again at any given moment (being that he did and does have degenerative disk disease) ...
but i'm just so glad that i didn't have to say goodbye to him just yet.
he still looks like a little boy and acts like one too, and is healthy otherwise. it would have been heartbreaking to say goodbye just because his legs didn't work.
so...keep my sweet boy in your hearts and hope that he's got a decent amount of time left here with us because he's ...
such a good boy :))
on a side note ....we ordered him a pair of "boots" from a company found on line called Pro-Active Paws. it's for dogs with disabilities. since romans incident he tends to "knuckle" his front feet a lot causing scraped up knuckles and nails. so if we have him outside for a while we'll put his boots on to protect his knuckles.
here's a little video did to thank the makers **please ignore the mats all over the floors (he can't walk on hardwood) and the mess on the deck and in yard...it was after many snow storms**
actually since we've gotten the boots he's taught himself to kind of throw his front feet out in front of him so his paws land flat and don't knuckle so much. he still scrapes a little sometimes but it's not as bad as it was.
and lastly...but not least ...
i'd like to thank my awesome flickr friends erik and kelly for the amazing care basket they sent to us to help us get thru! it was very much appreciated and we made them a video too...but i'm not going to share that one as my house was seriously messy in it! ha :)
erik is a featured artist in a local shop this month! check it out!! congrats again!
I had an MRI done looking for answers to a condition called hemifacial spasm (HFS). They didn't find what they were expecting to find, but they saw that I have a ruptured disk in my neck. That probably explains my headaches, sore neck & shoulder & weakness in my right arm this summer!! Unfortunately it does not explain the hemifacial spasms. I will post more on that later. I have an appointment with a nuerosurgeon later this month to see what can be done about the ruptured disk.
