Jackson Browne - Sydney Opera House - March 28, 2016
Jackson Browne is one of the best singer/songwriters in rock'n'roll, and this show at a packed Opera House was fantastic.
It was the start of a short Australian tour following his appearance at Byron Bay's Bluesfest the night before.
The set started with "Barricades of Heaven", "Just Say Yeah" and "For Everyman", and later included amazing versions of "I'm Alive", "Looking East", and "These Days".
Browne isn't a spotlight-hogging frontman - he gave his talented band loads of room to showcase their playing. The lead guitarist Shane Fontaine was exceptional, as was the rhythm guitarist / pedal steel player. In fact all the musicians were great, and produced a super clear but nice-and-loud sound.
Similar to Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne likes to talk to his audience about his songs and influences. JB's laid-back west coast style is a bit different to The Boss, but the crowd certainly threw back a number of requests for him. He responded to us with great unplanned renditions of "For an Dancer" and "Rosie".
It was an eclectic set and included a couple of politico/eco-preachy numbers, as well as a cool cover of Warren Zevon's "Carmelita".
After great performances of "The Pretender" and "Running on Empty", the band returned to stage for an encore starting with "Take It Easy", which was his tribute to the recently departed Glenn Frey of The Eagles (with whom he co-wrote the song).
All in all, it was great to see a master songwriter performing such great songs. While there were omissions - I would have loved to have heard "Somebody's Baby" or "Doctor My Eyes" - he's got such a large catalogue of albums that it didn't matter. It wasn't a greatest hits show, and he wasn't just going through the motions. He sang with passion, played what looked like a different guitar for each song, joked with and responded to his audience, took cool detours in both song selection and instrumental jams, and delivered a fantastic show.

Walking dead. Still tired. Can't sleep. Have work, and duties, and people, and, and, and 31 is so close.
As a teenager I would drive Father's
Chevrolet cross-county, given me
reluctantly: “Always keep the tank
half full, boy, half full, ya hear?”
The fuel gauge dipping, dipping
toward Empty, hitting Empty, then
—thrilling!—'way below Empty,
myself driving cross-county
mile after mile, faster and faster,
all night long, this crazy kid driving
the earth's rolling surface,
against all laws, defying chemistry,
rules, and time, riding on nothing
but fumes, pushing luck harder
than anyone pushed before, the wind
screaming past like the Furies …
I stranded myself only once, a white
night with no gas station open, ninety miles
from nowhere. Panicked for a while,
at standstill, myself stalled.
At dawn the car and I both refilled. But,
Father, I am running on empty still.
Back in May, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to assist my housemate as he shot a video for The Maddigan's new single, Running on Empty
Today, they released the video, so I can now share my photographs with you all.
It was such a fun day.

Alright, now it might be serious. I decided when I took the previous shot that I wouldn't worry because the Honda gets amazing mileage and the gas light wasn't on. A couple of minutes went by and now the light is on. Time to worry. But the GPS shows gasoline available in 13 miles, so it should be OK, right?

Somehow, in my hurry to get from here to there, I found my gas gauge looking like this in the middle of the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming. There aren't any stations around there. Should I worry?

Since the COVID-19 lockdown kicked in about two months ago, I don't get out much anymore. Now infection rates have slowed and restrictions have started easing. Soon there'll be beauty parlours, cafés, restaurants and pubs opening again. Even so, with a lot of non-essential businesses already operating, when I did venture out today, this normally busy plaza was dead — running on empty.
Sure, these shop fronts are painted out with murals thanking the fire fighters and recording the tragedies of the climate and fire ravaged summer gone because these particular shops are closed for building works. Others are still open. Yet it has an empty feeling from the absence of people, not the absence of these shops. Yes, the usual beggars and homeless are still about, more obvious than ever. Has anyone been more at risk than them? That they are here today really highlights the helplessness and hopelessness of their plight and society's failing of them.
That's COVID-19, that's society — running on empty.
