Good morning RDU! My name is Vic, and I live in Raleigh. I moved from Ames, Iowa to Chapel Hill 9 years ago with my then girlfriend —> fiancée —> wife who was starting grad school at UNC, and we moved to Raleigh in 2009. I’m an Engineer at Research Square (researchsquare.com), where I build things that help academics successfully publish their science. Today however, I took the day off from work to show you some of my favorite things around Raleigh! We’re going to start today off with a quick morning run through the Crabtree Creek Trail (part of the Capital Area Greenway), a 14.6 mile long trail that starts at Anderson Point Park and goes all the way up to Lindsay Dr off of Duraleigh Rd. It is third in length only to Neuse River Trail (27.5 miles) and Walnut Creek Trail (15.6 miles). The trail access is less than a mile from my house, making it a resource I use often. It’s a pretty fantastic way to be alone with just your thoughts and nature. The trail I run on is always so clean all the time, and for that we need to thank the Raleigh Parks System (@raleighparks) volunteer Adopt-A-Trail program and the volunteers themselves. UPDATE: I finally relocated this old gas station earlier today. Made the almost 2hr drive and located it in the small town of Constable, New York. Unfortunately, it no longer looks like this.

New update photo coming soon.

Wish I could remember exactly where I took this photo back in the fall of 1991? I wanna go back ands re-shoot it. Anyone have any idea exactly where this place is?

My memory escapes me.

This gas station sits abandoned alongside I-80 near Lyman, Wyoming. It looks pretty bleak. In some ways this place has never really recovered from the Dust Bowl era. Stations like this one popped up when the war ended, but failed to last. The high plains prairie slowly returns to its native state with sage and tall grass taking over again. If only the heels of bison would puncture the wild turf again, the prairie flowers could grow, the wild turnips and swards again become the natural food, and squash could mark the distant spring.

Last night I got a nice surprise.

I went to the opening of the Photography 07 exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery. I would have been involved in it except I couldn't afford to print and frame work for that as well as my solo show so close together.

All the artists are women and there is some really great work, my favourites being Rachel Dean and Elaine Batton's work.

We had a drink and checked out the photographs, then Kiet and I decided it was too crowded and we were hungry, so we started to leave. I stopped by the entrance to look at what other invites and such were there, and although I'd known Mark was getting the invites done soon, I hadn't realised that he'd already gotten them printed. So there amongst the various invites to the other upcoming exhibitions were mine! Eep!

Very exciting, scary, and REAL.

Back in May, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to assist my housemate as he shot a video for The Maddigan's new single, Running on Empty

Today, they released the video, so I can now share my photographs with you all.

It was such a fun day.

Jackson Browne - Sydney Opera House - March 28, 2016

Jackson Browne is one of the best singer/songwriters in rock'n'roll, and this show at a packed Opera House was fantastic.

It was the start of a short Australian tour following his appearance at Byron Bay's Bluesfest the night before.

The set started with "Barricades of Heaven", "Just Say Yeah" and "For Everyman", and later included amazing versions of "I'm Alive", "Looking East", and "These Days".

Browne isn't a spotlight-hogging frontman - he gave his talented band loads of room to showcase their playing. The lead guitarist Shane Fontaine was exceptional, as was the rhythm guitarist / pedal steel player. In fact all the musicians were great, and produced a super clear but nice-and-loud sound.

Similar to Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne likes to talk to his audience about his songs and influences. JB's laid-back west coast style is a bit different to The Boss, but the crowd certainly threw back a number of requests for him. He responded to us with great unplanned renditions of "For an Dancer" and "Rosie".

It was an eclectic set and included a couple of politico/eco-preachy numbers, as well as a cool cover of Warren Zevon's "Carmelita".

After great performances of "The Pretender" and "Running on Empty", the band returned to stage for an encore starting with "Take It Easy", which was his tribute to the recently departed Glenn Frey of The Eagles (with whom he co-wrote the song).

All in all, it was great to see a master songwriter performing such great songs. While there were omissions - I would have loved to have heard "Somebody's Baby" or "Doctor My Eyes" - he's got such a large catalogue of albums that it didn't matter. It wasn't a greatest hits show, and he wasn't just going through the motions. He sang with passion, played what looked like a different guitar for each song, joked with and responded to his audience, took cool detours in both song selection and instrumental jams, and delivered a fantastic show.

Running On Empty lyrics

Songwriters: Browne, Jackson;

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels

Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields

In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one

I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on, running on empty

Running on, running blind

Running on, running into the sun

But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive

Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive

In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own

I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

Running on, running on empty

Running on, running blind

Running on, running into the sun

But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go

People need some reason to believe

(From: www.elyrics.net/read/j/jackson-browne-lyrics/running-on-e...)

I don't know about anyone but me

If it takes all night, that'll be all right

If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels

I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels

I look around for the friends that I used to turn to, to pull me through

Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on, running on empty

Running on, running blind

Running on, running into the sun

But I'm running behind

Honey, you really tempt me

You know the way you look so kind

I'd love to stick around

But I'm running behind

Running on

You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find

Running behind

Running into the sun but I'm running behind

Here Jackson Browne tells a story about the last time he played at Westbury Theatre on Long Island, NY. At that show, a fan requested a seldom-played song, and Jackson attempted to play it for him, but couldn't remember all of the lyrics. So Jackson asked the fan to come on stage and help him with the lyrics he was forgetting.

As Jackson was telling this story, someone from the crowd yelled "I'm here!" - it was that fan from the story.

High up on Shiretoko Pass, miles from everywhere and anywhere, and what happens...we notice that the tank is empty.

We rolled downhill for 20km, and using the gas pedel once!

Luckily, we found somewhere to fill it up before the fumes ran out! Fun!!
