Houghton House, near Ampthill, Bedfordshire

Hoodoos take millions of years to form and stand 5 to 7 metres tall. Each hoodoo is a sandstone pillar resting on a thick base of shale that is capped by a large stone. Hoodoos are very fragile and can erode completely if their capstone is dislodged (in other words, no climbing allowed). The protected Hoodoos site is a guaranteed spot to see Hoodoos but smaller versions of these sandstone giants can be found all over the Badlands.

Ġgantija is a Neolithic, megalithic temple complex on the Mediterranean island of Gozo (in the village of Xaghra). The Ġgantija temples are the earliest of a series of megalithic temples in Malta. Their makers erected the two Ġgantija temples during the Neolithic Age (c. 3600-2500 BC), which makes these temples among the oldest megalithic monuments in the world, predating even the Giza pyramids in Egypt and England’s Stonehenge.

Together with other similar structures on Malta, these have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Megalithic Temples of Malta.

Asen's Fortress is a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains, close to the city of Plovdiv, on a high rocky ridge on the left bank of a river. Elevation of 279 m.

The earliest archaeological findings date from the time of the Thracians, the area of the fortress being also inhabited during the Ancient Roman and Early Byzantine period. The fortress gained importance in the Middle Ages, first mentioned in the statute of the Bachkovo Monastery in the 11th century. The fortress was conquered by the armies of the Third Crusade.

The Aulne monastery (Abbaye d'Aulne) was once a Benedictine and then a Cistercian monastery - and now it is mostly in ruins. It was founded already in 637 and came under Cistercian rule in 1147. The monastery had many ups and downs, with its last golden era in the 18th century. But the monastery was sacked by French revolutionaries in 1794 and turned to ruins.

At the ruins of the former abbey of Jumièges. This place was founded already back in the 7th century, but was burnt down by marauding Vikings. The place was rebuilt in the 10th and 11th century with the abbey church consecrated again in 1067. The church was later reworked 1267-1278 in the Gothic style.

It was finally abandoned during the French Revolution.

The church ruin of the Holy Grave, also known as the Schöntal ruin, is the ruin of the Beguine Monastery church, which was built between 1543 and 1545 and burned down in 1552. This was built by Archbishop Albrecht von Brandenburg around 1500 in the "Tiergarten zu Aschaffenburg". In 1540 he made his partner Agnes Pless his abbess. Already in the Schmalkaldic War in 1546 and a few years later in the Second Margrave War in 1552, the building was largely destroyed. With the dissolution of the Beguine Convent, the Aschaffenburg Church of the Holy Sepulcher was left to decay. Since the church building only stood for a short time, the presence of the beguines in Aschaffenburg's local history has only been handed down in the zoo. The ruins were later included in the park design.

The only remnant of once a house, might even be a mansion.

Simat de la Valdegna

Simat de la Valldigna, Spain, Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1297 by James II of Aragon. Since the beginning, it was one of the most important monasteries of the Cistercian order. It was founded by the monks of Santes Creus in the Tarragona province. The whole Valldigna valley belonged to the monks, according to a royal order.

The monastery was inhabited by monks until 1835, when a revolt in the Valldigna valley took place after the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal. After that, the monks were forced to abandon the monastery. Most of its goods and works of art were sold, plundered or destroyed.

This ancient Cistercian monastery was neglected and in ruins, until the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government) began a process of restoration.

After decades of abandonment, now the monastery of Santa Maria de Valldigna is, according to the 57th article of the Statute of Autonomy of the Valencian Community, "the spiritual, historical and cultural temple of the ancient Kingdom of Valencia. It is as well a symbol of the grandeur of the Valencian people". The same article states that "the Generalitat Valenciana will recover, restore and preserve the monastery (...) a law from the Valencian Parliament will determine the destiny and usage of the monastery as a meeting point of all Valencians, and as a research center for the recovery of the Valencian Community history".

The church of the old monastery of San Esteban de Ribas de Sil.

Three semi-circular apses of Romanesque style (12th century), the central lower than the lateral ones, leaving room for an extensive rosette that gives light to the temple. They are divided by buttresses in the form of high columns that reach the beautiful cornice with half-point archery. Later buildings, such as the sacristy, impede the proper appreciation of the whole of the apse.
