I haven't posted in several days ... feels like forever! I'm happy that I finally found time to do a little editing (actually worked on it backstage during rehearsals). Now I have one ready to post every work day this week (I'm trying to pay a little more attention to "work" and a little less attention to photography ... annoying, but necessary).

These are the little toy cars and trains that I photographed for Nicholas to keep him busy while his mom cooked. He was thrilled with the way they looked "big" in the view finder. ;)

Yep, we can lay claim to the state with the annual Rattlesnake Roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. And, of course, where else would you find a lucite pen holder in the shape of Texas with a baby rattlesnake set into it?

Although the annual Sweetwater Texas Rattlesnake Roundup isn't until March, pouring gasoline down into the dens to force the snakes out occurs during the winter leading up to the event. In addition to polluting the environment, it is unregulated hunting of your native wildlife. Many of these animals are kept inhumanely for weeks, only to be stressed and mistreated further at the roundup, breaking state and federal animal abuse laws on a colossal scale...and for profit. At the very least, ethical hunting practices must be applied to these reptiles, just as it is for other terrestrial game in this country. This is a short video to act as a reminder that this unlawful, barbaric event has been going on for decades and will continue to do so until there is more public outcry.

This photo was taken while I was volunteering in Gainesville's 9th Annual Great Air Potato Roundup.

The big brown thing in front of me is the tuber of an air potato called Dioscorea alata, or "winged yam." It probably weighed close to thirty pounds! (They aren't always this big.)

The vine is classified as an exotic invasive species, meaning that it spreads into natural areas and displaces native species. These vines can grow up to 30 or more feet long-- you see the remains of the vine coming off the top of the tuber in the photo. As the vines grow, they produce air potatoes (also called "bulbils") that later fall off and can sprout new vines.

The other type of invasive air potato that's common in this area is Dioscorea bulbifera. You can see a few of the light-colored, round bulbils on the white plastic bag to my left.

Not something you see every day.

Seemingly uninterested cats have managed to surround a squadron of pigeons. Meanwhile, in the background, someone attempts to hurl themselves over the wall.

Should have called it 'A posse of pussies and a precipice pending' perhaps.

:O)
