Rigging on the Nao Trinidad, a replica of the flagship on Magellan's expedition around the world. At the Festival of Sail event in Marquette. The boat was sponsored by the Spanish province of Andalucia and was full of fascinating information about the expedition. Only 18 of the 270 sailors who began the expedition in 1519, and only one of the five ships, survived. Neither Magellan nor the Nao Trinidad were among the survivors who finally reached Spain again in 1522.

The snagged nets and ropes caught my attention as I wandered under the piers, but when I found this bit I came to the conclusion it has become a tradition for people to tie bits of rope and net they find washed up on the beach to the girders under the pier. Or do they just snag on the barnacles as they pass with the ebb and flow of the tides? I need to know. Are you a person who ties bits of old rope to the girders below the pier? And if you do, "Why?"

Stonehaven harbour. I liked the way the ropes worked in the composition.
