The Nathaniel Ropes Mansion, located at 318 Essex Street, is a Georgian Colonial home built in the late 1720's, and expanded in 1894. The mansion gets its name from the Ropes family, who were the property's residents for over a century, starting in 1768, but is known to fans of the 1993 film Hocus Pocus as Allison's home. The mansion became a museum in 1912 and is operated by the Peabody Essex Museum, with a Colonial Revival style garden.

The Chestnut Street District, roughly by bound Bridge, Lynn, Beckford, and River Streets, features a collection of well-preserved Federal-style homes, built primarily between 1796 and 1850 during Salem’s maritime golden age. The district reflects the wealth generated by the city’s thriving international trade where wealthy merchants, shipowners and sea captains commissioned grand homes along the wide, tree-lined street.
