Natural slate from Welsh slate quarries is globally recognised as the finest roofing slates in the world. It was built at the end of 19th Century by master-builders Pyrch Mykhailo Mykhailovych and Pyrch Fedir Mykhailovych and re-built in 1946. After Prykarpattia’s joining to the Soviet Ukraine, the mill became the property of a local collective farm. It was used for its intended purpose. In 1960th, after a water flood it didn’t function till 1970th, when transferred to the Museum. The mill stayed on a bank of a torrent, flowing out of Shypit water flow.
The building has a double-room log construction. It consists of a “shack” to shelter the visiting farmers and a mill itself with mechanism. It has two waterwheels and two pairs of stones – grinding plates.
The flouring mill is built of smereka wood. Its high roof is covered by combination of straw and wood. It is the only showpiece of the museum with such combination of roofing techniques.
To grind corn, water should be forwarded to the walls. For this purpose, the stream has been dammed up by smereka timbers. Water taken from the torrent passed by hollowed-up logs to the upper wheels; they turned the axles with wheels – gears, and they tuned a shaft and the upper stone. Grains had to be loaded into a hopper fixed above, and flour fell into a through, fixed under the lower stone.
Total area of the building is 62.7 square meters.

Збудований наприкінці ХІХ ст. Майстри-будівничі - Пирч Михайло Михайлович і Пирч Федір Михайлович. В 1946 році його перебудували. Після приєднання Закарпаття до радянської України млин став власністю колгоспу, використовувався за призначенням. В 1960-х роках після повені млин не функціонував до 1970-х років, коли його перевезли до Музею. Млин стояв на березі стрімкого потоку, що витікає з водопаду Шипіт.
Споруда має двокамерну зрубну конструкцію і складається з «хижі» - приміщення, де жили і відпочивали приїжджі селяни, і млина з механізмом. Він має два водяних колеса і дві пари каменів – жорен.
Млин збудований із смерекового дерева. Високий дах комбінований, покритий соломою і деревом. В музеї це єдиний експонат, де поєднано різні матеріали та покрівельні техніки.
Щоб перемолоти збіжжя, треба було спрямувати воду на колеса. Для цього потік перегороджувався гаттю із смерекових колод. Воду з потоку подавали довбаними колодами до верхніх коліс, які обертали вали із закріпленими на них колесами – шестернями, а вони обертали веретено і верхній камінь. Зерно засипали в кіш, що кріпиться зверху, а борошно сиплеться в корито, яке закріплене внизу нижнього каменю.
Загальна площа споруди – 62,7 кв.м.
For anyone dreaming of a simple life, you may want to consider moving to Giethoorn in the Netherlands.
This idyllic village has no roads, and the only access is by water over the many beautiful canals or on foot over its wooden arch bridges. The locals use punters (boats) to get around and cars have to remain outside the village.
Located in the province of Overijssel, there are 4 miles of canals and farmhouses with thatched roofs dating back to the 18th century.
It's no surprise Giethoorn is a popular tourist attraction and has been given the nickname ’Little Venice’ of the Netherlands. Cycling and sailing as well as a guided canal tour are some of the many ways to discover its rustic charm.
The village was founded by a group of fugitives from the Mediterranean region around AD 1230. It became well known in 1958 when it was featured in the film Fanfare, made by Dutch filmmaker Bert Haanstra.

Bundles of labeled Johns-Manville "Colorbestos" asbestos-cement roofing shingles with rough-beveled edges imitating the look of "rough-hewn slates". Each bundle contains 20 shingles that measure approx. 9"x16" (one square foot each).
The landmark of the old mining village with interesting spindle-shaped urbanism is the Lutheran Church located on a low hill at the upper end of the village called Koceľovce. The church is an almost intactly preserved Gothic building from the first half of the 14th century, originally dedicated to St. Bartholomew.
The single-nave space with a polygonal chancel, a sacristy on the north side and a high tower on a square plan in the west, which turns into an octogon on the upper floors, is covered by a high gabled roof with shingles. The roofing of the tower, with an atypical metal Art Nouveau helmet, dates from the beginning of the 20th century. The nave is vaulted with classicist Theresian vaults instead of the original beamed ceiling, which is stylishly followed by an equally vaulted brick porch. During the last third of the 14th century, the polygonal chancel was built and vaulted with a cross rib vault. The stylistic purity of the church is emphasized by high windows divided by profiled bars and tracery and a system of supporting pillars of the chancel. The current southern entrance to the church was opened during the restoration in the 2nd half of the 18th century, it is closed by a Gothic door with decorative fittings, which were transferred here from the original entrance portal in the tower. Another Gothic door with rich wrought iron decoration is in the portal to the sacristy. This interesting wrought iron door also became the logo of the church.

Thatching methods have traditionally been passed down from generation to generation, and numerous descriptions of the materials and methods used in Europe over the past three centuries survive in archives and early publications.
In some equatorial countries, thatch is the prevalent local material for roofs, and often walls. There are diverse building techniques from the ancient Hawaiian hale shelter made from the local ti leaves (Cordyline fruticosa), lauhala (Pandanus tectorius) or pili grass (Heteropogon contortus).
The multi-tiered Meru towers of Besakih temple, Bali, uses black ijuk fibres.
Palm leaves are also often used. For example, in Na Bure, Fiji, thatchers combine fan palm leaf roofs with layered reed walls. Feathered palm leaf roofs are used in Dominica. Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica) thatched roofs are used in Hawaii and Bali. In Southeast Asia, mangrove nipa palm leaves are used as thatched roof material known as attap dwelling. In Bali, Indonesia, the black fibres of Arenga pinnata called ijuk is also used as thatched roof materials, usually used in Balinese temple roof and meru towers. Sugar cane leaf roofs are used in Kikuyu tribal homes in Kenya.
Wild vegetation such as water reed (Phragmites australis), bulrush/cat tail (Typha spp.), broom (Cytisus scoparius), heather (Calluna vulgaris), and rushes (Juncus spp. and Schoenoplectus lacustris) was probably used to cover shelters and primitive dwellings in Europe in the late Palaeolithic period, but so far no direct archaeological evidence for this has been recovered. People probably began to use straw in the Neolithic period when they first grew cereals—but once again, no direct archaeological evidence of straw for thatching in Europe prior to the early medieval period survives.
Many indigenous people of the Americas, such as the former Maya civilization, Mesoamerica, the Inca empire, and the Triple Alliance (Aztec), lived in thatched buildings. It is common to spot thatched buildings in rural areas of the Yucatán Peninsula as well as many settlements in other parts of Latin America, which closely resemble the method of construction from distant ancestors. The first Americans encountered by Europeans lived in structures roofed with bark or skin set in panels that could be added or removed for ventilation, heating, and cooling. Evidence of the many complex buildings with fiber-based roofing material was not rediscovered until the early 2000s. French and British settlers built temporary thatched dwellings with local vegetation as soon as they arrived in New France and New England, but covered more permanent houses with wooden shingles.
In most of England, thatch remained the only roofing material available to the bulk of the population in the countryside, in many towns and villages, until the late 1800s. Commercial distribution of Welsh slate began in 1820, and the mobility provided by canals and then railways made other materials readily available. Still, the number of thatched properties actually increased in the UK during the mid-1800s as agriculture expanded, but then declined again at the end of the 19th century because of agricultural recession and rural depopulation. A 2013 report estimated that there were 60,000 properties in the UK with a thatched roof; they are usually made of long straw, combed wheat reed or water reed.
Gradually, thatch became a mark of poverty, and the number of thatched properties gradually declined, as did the number of professional thatchers. Thatch has become much more popular in the UK over the past 30 years, and is now a symbol of wealth rather than poverty. There are approximately 1,000 full-time thatchers at work in the UK, and thatching is becoming popular again because of the renewed interest in preserving historic buildings and using more sustainable building materials.
One side of the roof has been completed. I hesitate to say how long it took, but the effect will be excellent.
Everything will be interchangeable between the framed house and the finished house.
