In this image, taken three seconds after the previous one, the young barn owl has jumped down from the roof of the owl house to grab the rodent that its parent has just delivered. It probably hasn't eaten in seventeen hours, is very hungry, and has been screeching "feed me" for the last two hours. The one young owl, remaining on top of the owl house, really wants something to eat.....soon.
I lit this with one bare strobe on each of the tall light stands on either side of, and close to, the owl house. This house is about thirteen feet off of the ground, and the light stands are positioning the strobes a little below and off to either the side of the house. I'm using a YN560 and YN560-II in manual mode at 1/2 power, and they are triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N trigger. I sit in a chair away from the camera and trigger the shutter with the same trigger that fires the flash. I have one trigger in my hand, one receiver on my camera, one receiver on the YN560-II, and the YN560 is in slave mode which fires when it senses the other one firing.
Other pictures of the barn owls can be seen in our Barn Owls set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/
This gorgeous girl is on rodent patrol in Longwood Gardens. She wasn't interested in posing for the tourists. Persimmon is one of 14 cats that live at the gardens. She always has a warm place to stay when she wants to be inside, along with a medical plan and free food. It sounds like the perfect life for a feline. (Except for the part about eating mice!)

This is one of the young barn owls currently living in the owl nest house that we had installed on our property about fifteen months ago. They've been flying for about three weeks now, so we think that they'll be moving out soon, and the owl house will be vacant until the next batch arrives.
This was lit with an SB600 on a light stand, or as some say, "light on a stick". Triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode. Flash was in TTL mode.
I've put together a small set of pictures relating to the owls. Here's a link to that set www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/...

These feathers came from barn owls that are living in an owl house that we installed a little more than two years ago on our property. We did it to control the rodent population that's been thriving in our rural area, but we've come to really enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty of these wonderful birds. We've gathered these up off of the ground underneath the owl house that our nesting pair of owls raises their young owls in. They've raised two owls in 2011, 2012, and now again in 2013. The young owl still have not flown (or fledged) yet this year, but they're getting close. I look forward to getting some pictures as they learn to fly this year. The owls have done a great job, and I have not seen a gopher mound on our property in over a year. These birds, to my eyes, are remarkable handsome with beautiful colors (or as Monty Python used to say "lovely plumage").
I wanted to backlight the feathers, as I thought it would make them glow, and show their color and texture. I placed a YN560 in a Honl snoot behind and to the left of the feathers at about 11 o'clock. The flash in manual mode was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
I've took a few pictures of the owls last year with my flash, and you can get an idea of what these beautiful birds look like by viewing that set. Here's the link. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/...

Rats and rodents are considered to be one of the filthiest animals found in the planet. Rats are known to carry unwanted viruses and diseases which can be a health hazard for humans, both children and adults. Rats and rodents are very unsanitary, and they can contaminate your home rapidly if they are not extracted on time. These pests typically attack the attic and can multiply in numbers fast. While living in your home, they will urinate and defecate just about at any place convenient for them. Rat's are attracted to insulation because they can burrow under them and hide.
Wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, or even opossums were once not often present or seen in city or urban areas. With less and less land for wild animals to reside in, it is no longer uncommon to find them breaking into attics and crawlspaces of a home. Wild animals trespassing into homes are usually there as a place for security to give birth or provide a safe place for their offspring. It's highly advised that when you are hearing unusual noises in your attic or have witnessed wild animals at your property to have them removed immediately. Wild animals can be aggressive and dangerous to the residence of the home, especially if they are protecting their young.

Mice enter buildings seeking shelter, food, and places to cache food. If a pencil can slip into an opening, so can a mouse.
Typically, rodents chew or gnaw on objects in their environment to access resources. These teeth marks are located on the corner of a rodent bait station. The size of teeth marks can inform you which rodent pest is present. If gnaw marks are 1-2 mm wide per pair of teeth, it is likely mice. If the gnaw marks are 3.5-4mm wide per pair of teeth, they are likely from a rat. For more information: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP9Pi4W1ewc

Juvenile Pacific gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer catenifer) spotted in the bushes at work, near a nice source of mice.
The Latin name "catenifer" means "Chain-bearing, referring to the pattern on its back.
Gopher snakes are known to be rattlesnake mimics: when threatened, they will often vibrate their tails in dry brush or leaves, making a rattling sound. They will also flatten their heads so as to resemble rattlesnakes more closely.
Gopher snake akas include: Pacific gopher snake, coast gopher snake, bull snake, Churchill's bull snake, Oregon bull snake, Pacific pine snake, western bull snake, western gopher snake, Sonoran gopher snake, western pine snake. These are all terms for the species P. cantenifer, but some names refer to different subspecies. P. cantenifer catenifer is the only subspecies to occur in our area.
Gopher snakes are one of the best forms of natural rodent control there is (possibly on par with raptors), so it is a shame that they are often killed by people thinking they are rattlesnakes. For that matter, the killing of rattlesnakes is a shame as well. Gopher snakes will deviate from this diet, and also eat other reptiles, from fence lizards to other snakes, occasionally including rattlesnakes (unlike king snakes, they are not immune to rattlesnake venom, however). Gopher snakes are constrictors.
This one has gorgeous markings.
This is the first in a series of two pictures showing a young Barn Owl swallowing the rodent that it's parent has just delivered to it. I would have also shown the parent making the delivery except the perch blocked the view of the beak to beak transfer. I'm taking these pictures in the dark, and all I can see is shapes and movement when I trigger the flash and camera. The owls do an amazing job of rodent control, and we haven't seen a gopher mound on our property in either of the last two years. Previously we were plagued with gophers, who even killed a few fruit trees. Gophers bad, owls good.
Strobist info: Here's the description of the setup that I use for photographing the Barn Owls, and the owl house. The owl house is on top of a fifteen foot pole, which is about two feet in the ground, so the bottom of owl house is about thirteen feet off of the ground. I have one tall light stand on either side of the owl house, extended as high as they will go, and a third shorter light stand in the middle. The one on the left is lower because it is positioned on a slope that goes down from the house. The light stand in the middle is a shorter stand than the others, but it is extended as high as it will go. The flash on the left is a YN560, the middle flash is a Strobie 130 and the flash on the right is a YN560-II. All thee strobes are in manual mode set at 1/2 power. The middle and right flash are triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603 and the left flash is in slave mode and is triggered by the light from the other two flashes. I have a Yongnuo RF-603-N trigger on my camera which is triggered by an identical trigger that I have in my hand while sitting in a chair off camera. The Yongnuo triggers can act as either transmitter or receiver. The great thing about these triggers is that they are reliable, and are about $33 for a pair of them on Amazon. Wonderful technology at an amazing price. They're cheap, they work and they have a range of 15 meters.

This is one of the two young Barn Owls currently living in the owl nest house that we had installed on our property last year. This young bird had only been flying for about two weeks when I took this picture. They're still fairly new to flying, and a little clumsy at this stage, and he's just using his wings to avoid falling off the perch. I know it looks like he's just made a perfect landing, but that's not the case. I had just discovered that using a flash wouldn't drive them away, and it's the first time I'd ever photographed them using artificial lighting. The "Lovely Plumage" is a Monty Python reference for those of you old enough to remember.
Strobist info: In this case I used an SB600 on a light stand pointed at the owl house, triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode. The flash was in TTL mode.
I've put together a small set of pictures relating to the owls. Here's a link to that set www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/...
In this picture, the parent of the young owl has just arrived with the first of many rodents for the young Barn Owl on top of the nest box. If you view this large, in lightbox, you can see the rodent's tail hanging out of the parent's mouth. Since these owls only venture forth at dusk, this young owl hasn't probably had any food since it first got light around seventeen hours ago. The owl and it's sibling have been screeching "feed me" for the last two hours. There are two young barn owls living in this owl house on our property and one of them learned to fly 8 days ago, and the other one first flew four days ago. As far as we can tell, the young owls still can't feed themselves, and are dependent on their parents to feed them. Soon, though, they will be able to feed themselves. In the next image, which was taken three seconds after this one, you can see that the young owl has jumped off of the roof of the owl box and has grabbed the rodent in one of it's claws, while its sibling jealously look on.
I lit this with one bare strobe on each of the tall light stands on either side of, and close to, the owl house. This house is about thirteen feet off of the ground, and the light stands are positioning the strobes a little below and off to either the side of the house. 1970 - The Pink Palace rodent control officer. Cleo has dealt to another intruder. Her favourite trick was flipping cockroaches on their backs and let the ants deal to them. Took on a snake once that ended up behind the firewall of one of the Land-Rovers. Couldn't get it out so left note on steering wheel - "snake behind dash". No one was game to drive it for a week. Looking part Dingo and part Corgi, she was part of the team, always came to the beach with us on Sundays, didn't look forward to her bath afterwards. We'd get pet products sent up from family members in NZ. I'd always take Cleo out if I was travelling around Qui Nhon, she would sit on the ledge behind my head up against the armour plate with her head hanging out the window. If I was visiting a Vietnamese she'd stay in Landrover and if coaxed out she would look pathetic shaking & shivering and would not leave my side. The US Army Vets gave her regular rabies shots and issued her with her own dog tags. In 1989 we were told by Ba (PP's house keeper) that Cleo had passed away in the early eighties. Note: Had a long chat to Peter (the last Kiwi out of Qui Nhon) he'd left Cleo with the Catholic priest in Qui Nhon. Peter's story is amazing especially the evacuation of the Kiwis from Saigon. (I think Ba was giving us a happy ending).
These are two young barn owls who were hatched and raised in this owl nesting box on our property. I took this pictures last night around 9 o'clock at which point the owls had been cooped up (literally) inside for at least fifteen hours. The lower owl had previously flown for the first time the previous evening, and right after this image was taken he hopped out on the perch and took off for a flight. While he was gone, for about ten minutes, the other owl screeched nonstop. It had never been alone before in the owl box except when the other owl flew last night. It should be flying in a day or two.
I lit this with a two bare strobes on a light stands; on either side of the box, pointing up at the it. The strobes in manual mode were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N, which also acted as the remote shutter control for my camera. Pretty handy.
I have all of my owl pictures in my Barn Owl set which can be seen here. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/...

In this picture, one of the parents is delivering the first meal of the evening to whichever of its two young owls is in position to grab it. In the next picture you can see the young owl, and the surprising meal that its parent delivered. The extra set of wings that you see is the other young barn owl, who had the bad luck to be on top of the owl house when its parent delivered to the perch.
Here's a description of the setup that I use for photographing the Barn Owls, and the owl house. Last night I added a 3rd light stand and flash into the mix, in an attempt to get more even lighting, and hopefully do away with some of the shadows. The owl house is on top of a fifteen foot pole, which is about two feet in the ground, so the bottom of owl house is about thirteen feet off of the ground. I have one tall light stand on either side of the owl house, extended as high as they will go. The one on the left is lower because it is positioned on a slope that goes down from the house. The light stand in the middle is a shorter stand than the others, but it is extended as high as it will go.
As a company rest assure that A Team Rodent and Wildlife Control Services employs a team of highly qualified specialist that is ready to help you get rid of rats and wildlife problems.
