President Abraham Lincoln was sitting in this rocker at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865, when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth. He was watching the play Our American Cousin when Booth slipped into the president’s box and shot him. Lincoln died the next day.
The theater owner replaced the conventional theater seat in the box with the larger, more comfortable chair that you see here to accommodate Lincoln’s large frame.
After the assassination, the rocker was seized by the government as evidence and was stored in various Washington, D.C. buildings for over 60 years!
In 1929, the government returned the rocker to the theater owner’s family. It was then sold at auction where it was purchased by Henry Ford for his new museum!
