Took this on the way up to Paradise on Mt Rainier last weekend. We hadn't reached the level where the snow was quite significant as you can see there are just a few patches on the rocks. This is a HDR processed and tone mapped in Photomatix using a single raw image exported from Lightroom after creating five virtual copies and adjusting the exposure on each to simulate several bracketed shots. I was pretty happy the way this one turned out. I got this shot, leaning over the side of the bridge, reaching out and holding my camera as low as possible and releasing the shutter just hoping I would get a decent composition. My lucky day.
Hope everyone had a good weekend and the week ahead is good as well, as we enter into the countdown before Christmas.
In late summer, alpine meadows are ablaze with the color of the wildflowers and if weather permitted, you will be greeted by the glorious views of Mount Rainier and Nisqually Glacier at Paradise..

The white Moorish town of Aljezur lies at the northern tip of the west coast and in between is one of my favorite beaches of all - Praia de Clerigo.
The road leading to the little and unspoiled village is a steep decline and sometimes when storms have occurred overnight the strong winds blow the sand over the main track forming quite high drifts. . Sometimes in Spring and Autumn a mist occurs spreading from the Atlantic over the cliffs and casts shadows amongst the painted wooden huts.

Meandering through Autumn road after the rain along Cabot Trail (Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia Canada)

During the November 2009 "Trains & Troops" event, Great Western Decapod #90 was the power on the regular, hourly train. In this frame, with the "golden hour" rapidly approaching, we catch a dark side view of the big 2-10-0 making her run back to East Strasburg with a combination of World War II re-enactors and regular patrons on board. The train is pictured here, just west of Cherry Hill crossing, climbing the grade through the Cherry Crest Farm.
The low hanging cloud opens up a tiny window for a quick peek to the peak of the snow-blanketed Mount Rainier, name Columbia Crest at 14,410 ft, the fifth highest mountain of the continental USA..

Forests of young evergreen conifers (mostly Subalpine fir and Mountain hemlock) at Mount Rainier where they keep their needle-like leaves year-round..

The Strasburg Rail Road's chunky Canadian National Switcher #7312 appears to be working the east end of the East Strasburg yard in this image from November of 2008, moving some period wooden freight cars behind an Amish farm adjacent to the yard. In actuality, the locomotive was returning from a trip to Paradise, hauling the half-hour "Troop Train" during the railroad's Veteran's Day "Trains & Troops" event. In the mid to late 2000s, the railroad ran a special event on Veteran's Day weekend, in conjunction with the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, which is just across the street. The event featured lots of World War I and II re-enactors and two-train operation, with a regular passenger train leaving each hour on the hour and a mixed "Troop Train" leaving on the half hour. On this particular weekend, the Norfolk & Western 12-wheeler #475 did the honors on the passenger trains and 7312 handled the "Troop Train."

During a brief stop to exchange passengers at Groff's Picnic Grove, Strasburg Rail Road Engineer Steve Meola takes advantage of the moment to perform some light service on Locomotive #7312. In this frame from August of 2008, we see him toting the obligatory oil cans as he drains the moisture from the engine's air brake reservoir. During mid-summer, 2-train operation, the stop at Groff's typically provides about 3-5 minutes for the westbound crews to oil around, as they have to wait for eastbound train to pass them on the siding here.
Departing the little station area at Lehmann Place in Paradise, trains on Pennsylvania's Strasburg Rail Road face a pretty steady, uphill climb over the 4+ mile route back to East Strasburg Depot. The first mile or so of that journey is almost always a good place to get photos of the steam locomotives smoking furiously as they struggle to get their trains up to the 20-mph track speed. In this frame, we catch a summertime, half-hour train as it rounds the west end of the curve named for Henry K. Long, pouring out a nice, dark exhaust plume. In control today is the Strasburg's first steam engine from the tourist era, that being the former Canadian National 0-6-0 Switcher #7312. This image was captured during August of 2008, when 2-train operations were common at mid-day, during the peak summer months. In later years, this practice was limited to the weekends.
Fireman Andrew "Doc" Sellers. takes a break from the coal scoop to ensure the track is clear ahead as GWR #90 barrels through Carpenters Crossing with the hourly train. Since all of the crossings on the Strasburg Railroad are gated, Doc's primary concern is watching out for the safety of folks like me as I try to get that in-your-face shot of the big decapod.
Years ago I was able to visit Mt Rainier again and it was a real delight.. I took still pictures of the waterfalls that we ran across and a few videos.. Those have been posted but this is one of the stills that I used for a little program named PhotoMirage from Corel and I really was surprised at how real it seems...

Not every image will be spectacular.
Some will be taken in perfect light, in incredible locations, during unforgettable moments. Others may come from ordinary days, difficult conditions, or creative experiments that don’t quite work.
But that’s what this challenge is about.
Growth doesn’t happen by waiting for perfect conditions. It happens by picking up the camera, getting out there, and creating anyway.
This image, Road to Paradise, felt like the perfect place to begin. A winding path disappearing over the horizon, lit by a dramatic break in the clouds. It feels symbolic of the journey ahead: uncertain, exciting, and full of possibilities.

Today while I was out in Glenorchy, I spoke to a Scottish tourist about the dark clouds coming in and how it looked like rain. He responded by saying "Son- we consider this a sunny day where I come from."
This photo was taken somewhere on the road between Glenorchy and Paradise- I made sure to include sheep this time so that there can be no doubt I'm in New Zealand!
