A view of the Virgin River from the Riverside Walk Trail in Zion National Park. A short flat well maintained trail that follows the river. This park is a day trip from Las Vegas. It's a hikers paradise with numerous trails. It also has bike trails, camping and lodging. I was only there for a day but could've spent a week there. A great park that is entered from the bottom of canyon instead of the top. #NPS #ZionNationalPark #VirginRiver #hiking #Utah #川 #キャニオン

The Riverside Walk Trail in Zion National Park. A view of the Virgin River winding thru Mystery Canyon. This is between the Temple of Sinawava and The Narrows. The trail is a short and mostly flat hike. Parking is limited at the trailhead though but there are buses. This park is a great day trip from Las Vegas. There is also lodging here if you need an early start on a trail. A hiker's paradise. #NPS #ZionNationalPark #RiversideWalkTrail

If you go to Zion, get off the walkways and the trams and hike along the Virgin River. You'll get a better sense of the park and its singular beauty. And, most importantly, you'll be alone with nature.

Note the shaft of light which is coming from between two formations on the left.

The River Walk Trail at Zion is a paved path above the Virgin River which leads you to the Narrows. The sights are lovely. But my personal river walk is off the trail, away from the crowds, and down along the flowing water. There you seem to get a better sense of the park's beauty.

When you take the Riverwalk Trail at Zion, you'll follow a path along the Virgin River to a place where it enters 'The Narrows'. If you want to go further, you'll need to be prepared to get wet. You can follow the river for a long ways back into the narrow canyon, but you will be up to your waist in water for much of the way.

Of course, it is best to check the weather before that adventure because a storm could cause a flash flood inside the stricture, and that could be deadly.

Enlarge the picture and you'll be able to see some folks about to make the plunge.

Just below the Narrows on the Virgin River, a formation or a slab from the cliffside has follen into the river and broken apart. It nearly blocks the river but has the benefit of breaking the water into numerous little falls.

In the Spring, when snow melts in the higher elevations, this "dam" is nearly under the raging waters.

I spotted this lady sitting on a sand bar jutting out into the Virgin River in Zion National Park. Though I did not meet her, I knew we were kindred spirits. She wanted to find a place to be alone, away from the madding crowds as Shakespeare would say. If you look closely she has her finger up to her cheek as if contemplating, lost in thought.

Walking the River Walk Trail in Zion is a mistake. It is crowded on the paved trail and the river is hidden below. Get off the trail and go down along the Virgin River to reach the narrows. You will see so much more beauty. This shady spot was a wonderful place to sit and just listen to the water.

Another waterfall of the Virgin River near The Narrows. I was above the flow in the shade of some cottonwood trees when I shot this one.

We're off the trail here, hiking along the Virgin River, heading for where the canyon narrows at the end of the Riverside Walk train. I liked the vague reflections in the water of the river and the shadows on the boulder.

I marveled at the Virgin River which runs for hundreds of miles through a desert environment. Around it are cacti, sand and stone, and occasionally high cliffs and formations like those in Zion. But on it goes, never ceasing it flow. It's a stranger in a foreign land.

When you on on the Riverside Walk trail, be sure to break away from the crowd on the raised and paved trail. Step down and go next to the river. A sandy trail follows the water all the way to the The Narrows. You will find so many pretty scenes such as this one along the way.

The Virgin River ran over a jumble of boulders at this point and the sunlight reflected off the water in a gorgeous aqua tone.

This is the 'other' side of Angels Landing (center formation), not often captured in a photo. That is the Virgin River running towards it. The river does not look capable of carving the canyon, but you should see it in a flash flood stage. Then it looks very capable!

The Virgin River, when you spend time down close to it, makes scenes that are just a gorgeous as the rock formations above which most people photograph. I am wondering how many photographers leave the park without ever taking a picture of the river that carved the canyon.

Returning from our hike along the Virgin River to The Narrows, I looked down from the raised, paved, pathway and saw this couple down below. Obviously, they were enjoying their date in Zion NP and it looks like they decided to freeze this moment with s 'Selfie'.`

A sandy trail follows the water all the way to the The Narrows. I love this kind of location where the waters are cascading through small rocks and around larger ones. The sound is just soothing.

You can study the rock wall and try to figure out where this big boy came from.

The Virgin River makes some twists and turns here. I like the way it picks up the colors of the greenery along the banks. And I like the shadows on the sandy bank too. A peaceful moment this was.

The Virgin River here cascades down a jumble of boulders about 30 feet high. As you can see, it is a popular spot. I stood and wondered at what forces piled these boulders at this spot, nearly damming up the river.

If you go to Zion, do yourself a favor and get off the main walkways. Find a trail away from the crowds, or just go down and walk along the banks of the Virgin River as I'm doing here. This shot is taken near the Narrows. I liked the reflections from the cliff faces onto the water.

Look closely and you'll spot some folks at the mouth of The Narrows. They are about to get into the cold water and continue their exploration of Zion Canyon to a point where one can almost touch both sides of the canyon and look up at the high formations.

These folks are catching their breath before entering 'The Narrows' where they will be walking in the river with cold water sometimes up to their chests. The view, when they get inside the very narrow canyon, will make it worthwhile.

It was a bit warm as we hiked along the Virgin River near The Narrows in Zion NP. Then we came upon the tree that was shading the sandy bank. I wished we had packed a picnic.

Explore April 6, 2008, # 491. Best viewed large. Zion National Park; Riverside Walk trail. This is an easy trail...one of the words I heard most often while on this trail was "Grandma, " (and I mean other people; not my grandson.)

I could spend hours in a spot like this. The trees are shading me from the sun and nobody is near. I can listen to the burble of the river and see it splash over a low waterfall. Very nice place to be.

This is the paved path most people take when on the Riverside Walk.

It is a very rare moment when you can shoot a scene such as this with nobody else in the scene. That is why, for most of the way, we chose to be down close to the Virgin River with only a few other hikers.

The Virgin River ran up against a large boulder at this spot after rolling over rocks of varying sizes. I liked all the texture in the scene.

"Nothing in the world is more flexible and yielding than water. Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong, none can withstand it, because they have no way to change it. So the flexible overcome the adamant, the yielding overcome the forceful. Everyone knows this, but no one can do it." - Lao Tzu
