Taken in May 1912 (it's written on the back - with her name), and I bought it in Prague.
This photo of a highly fashionable woman, smiling at the camera with a bunch of flowers in her arms, has always been a favourite of mine in my collection.
However, that does not mean that I don't think there is more to this scene than meets the eye. This is clearly a staged photo, you can almost hear the photographer instructing her how she should sit and turn and look for the optimal result. First of all that is not a natural way to hold a bouquet of flowers. Secondly, I think she is seconds from actually falling down from the ledge she is sitting on - note her hand that is clinging on to that same ledge. That is not a relaxed hand, that is a hand holding on. Thirdly, she does have a charming smile - but I would not say it reaches her eyes, instead I get a feeling she was far more concentrated on holding the pose than being able to relax and just enjoy the moment.
