Rhoonse Grienden (Tidal Forest)
Rhoon is a village that borders the municipality of the city of Rotterdam, South Holland, the Netherlands.
According to its history it was established in 1199 and was ruled by the lords of Duiveland. In the 14th century the village was struck by many floods. In the last big flood, the North Sea flood of 1953, the Dutch government implemented the "deltawerken" (Delta Works). This is a large protection barrier of dikes and dams to keep the water of the North Sea out during high tides. In 1969 Rhoon also became part of this plan and a large dike was established around the island of IJsselmonde.
Rhoon is part of the island of IJsselmonde and situated in the south of this island. On the lands outside the dikes, it has a small yacht marina on the banks of the river Oude Maas. Also a "griend" which is a tidal forest. The river Oude Maas has a tidal difference of around 1.2 meter in a twice daily cycle.
Since 1 January 1985, the village has been part of the municipality of Albrandswaard together with Poortugaal.[1]
The village has a connection to the city of Rotterdam by Rotterdam Metro line D, through Rhoon station.
In Rhoon is the Dutch Consulate General of Ireland.

The Oude Maas ("Old Meuse") is a distributary of the Rhine River, and a former distributary of the Maas River, in the Dutch province of South Holland. It begins at the city of Dordrecht where the Beneden Merwede river splits into the Noord River and the Oude Maas. It ends when it joins the Nieuwe Maas to form Het Scheur

The Oude Maas forms the southern boundary of the IJsselmonde island. Soon after Dordrecht the Dordtsche Kil forks off and after that the Oude Maas forms the northern boundary of the Hoeksche Waard island, flowing west until the Spui river forks off at the town of Oud-Beijerland. The Oude Maas then heads northwest between the towns/cities of Spijkenisse and Hoogvliet and joins river Nieuwe Maas opposite the city of Vlaardingen, the combined river is known as Het Scheur and flows to the North Sea.
The river is tidal and has nature and recreation areas.

Het kasteel van Rhoon ligt aan de Dorpsdijk in Rhoon
Ontstaan
Voor het eerst genoemd getuige de stichtingsoorkonde op 11 januari 1199.
Geschiedenis
De functie van versterking heeft het kasteel slechts in heel vroeger tijden gekend toen het geslacht van Duveland, zich van Roden noemende, het in bezit hadden.
In 1572 werd het kasteel door de watergeuzen bestormd en in de brand gestoken. Het kasteel werd daarna weer opgebouwd maar vervolgens getroffen door stormvloed. In 1598 wederom herstelt
In 1683 gaat het kasteel over op de familie Bentinck en in 1830 wordt de machtige Rotterdamse reder en koopman Anthony van Hoboken eigenaar. Na het overlijden van zijn zoon in 1913 ging het kasteel een periode van veval tegemoet. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog was het kasteel uitgeleefd en leeggeroofd.
Het eerste kasteel ook wel de marenburch of den ouden toerne genaamd was wellicht een donjon en stond 500 meter ten oosten van het huidige kasteel
Vanaf 1466 wordt Rhoon omschreven als een groter complex bestaand uit een hofstad met singels en grachten. Kort na de restauratie in 1975 werd in de fundering van de brug bakstenen van een groot formaat gevonden die van dit kasteel, welk werd verwoest in 1572, afkomstig zouden zijn.
Het huidige kasteel werd na de brand van 1572 herbouwd en getuige een gevelsteen gerestaureerd of verbouwd in 1598. In 1971 werd het Zuid-Hollands Landschap eigenaar van het kasteel. In 1975 kwam de restauratie gereed die in opdracht van stichting kasteel de Rhoon werd uitgevoerd.
Huidige situatie
Kasteel Rhoon bestaat uit drie naast elkaar geplaatste vleugels. De noordelijke vleugel is zowel in hoogte als in de breedte de grootste. De midden- en zuidvleugel verschillen in hoogte en breedte niet van elkaar maar wel is de zuidelijke vleugel langer. Deels langs de oostelijke zijgevel van de noordvleugel staat een langerekt stallencomplex van één bouwlaag. Zowel tegen de west- als tegen de noordgevel staat een traptoren. De westelijke traptoren heeft evenals de kelder dienst gedaan als gevangenis.
Het kasteel is een rijksmonument.

In het kasteel is een cultureel centrum gevestigd en in de stallen een restaurant.
