Reunion Island - Indian Ocean
Le cirque de Mafate est une caldeira de l'île de la Réunion (France ; située dans l'océan Indien). Il s'est formé à partir de l'effondrement du grand volcan le Piton des Neiges.
Le cirque très reculé et inaccessible fut colonisé au XIXème siècle par des esclaves marrons (c'est-à-dire des esclaves qui ont fui leurs maîtres), puis plus tard par de pauvres ouvriers blancs. Il doit son nom à un chef marron.
The Cirque de Mafate is a caldera on Réunion Island (France; located in the Indian Ocean). It was formed from the collapse of the large shield volcano the Piton des Neiges.
The very remote and inaccessible cirque was settled in the 19th century by maroon slaves (i.e. slaves who had escaped from their masters), then later by poor white laborers. It owes its name to one maroon leader.
Un superbe site de l'île de la Réunion dans l'océan Indien. L'eau s'engouffre dans la roche volcanique pour être propulsée en hauteur. Le spectacle est époustouflant.

Le Grand Brûlé est une immense étendue de lave noire solidifiée qui s'est formée au cours des différentes éruptions du volcan Le Piton de la Fournaise. A certains endroits, la végétation reprend le dessus. Il se situe à l'extrémité sud-est de l'île de la Réunion dans l'Océan Indien.

The Grand Brûlé is a huge expanse of solidified black lava that was formed during the various eruptions of Le Piton de la Fournaise volcano. In some places, the vegetation takes over. It is located at the south-eastern tip of Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
