Preveli South Rethimno - Crete, Greece

The lighthouse of the Venetian harbor of Rethymno is the second largest remaining Egyptian lighthouse in Crete, after the lighthouse of Chania harbor. It is built on the edge of the old harbour of Rethymnon.

The lighthouse we see today was built during the Egyptian Occupation of Crete (in dutch Kreta ) in the decade of 1830, when the Turks handed Crete to the Egyptians. Possibly there was an older Venetian lighthouse at the site, just like Chania harbor.

In 1864, the lighthouse came under the supervision of the French Lighthouse Company and today it’s not operating. The overall height of the lighthouse tower is 9 meters.

Rethymno (Greek: Ρέθυμνο, [ˈreθimno], also Rethimno, Rethymnon, Réthymnon, and Rhíthymnos) is a city of approximately 40,000 people in Greece, the capital of Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete. It was originally built during the Minoan civilization (ancient Rhithymna and Arsinoe), but was never a competitive Minoan centre. It was, however, strong enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town: two dolphins in a circle.

The Four New Martyrs Church

Four men named Aggelis, Manouil, Georgios and Nikolaos were born and raised in Melabas, Rethymnon. They were all farmers and married men with children. As the island was under Turkish occupation, the four young men were Crypto-Christians, meaning that they were officially Turkish. They had Turkish names and participated in Islamic custom, but in reality they remained faithful to all the traditions of the Orthodox Church. They fought in the Greek war of Independence from 1821 to 1824 and when the Turks recaptured Crete they were no longer afraid to declare their faith.

So during a tax collection campaign among the Christians by the Turks, they declared that they had been Christians all the time and that they were waiting for the moment to unite to Christ in martyrdom.

They were imprisoned in July 1824 and the leader of the Ottoman Turks Mehmet Pasha still tried to persuade them to embrace Islam. Without success and therefore they were beheaded near the Great Gate on October the 28th.

For three days, their bodies remained where they were killed and no one showed any interest. Then finally they were gathered and buried at the monastery of Saint Constantine, called Arkadi. They were honoured as Saints on October the 28th 1837 and their sainthood was confirmed on august the 29th in 1977.

In the Sanctuary of the temple, there is an ossuary where the Holy Skulls of Three of the Four Martyrs are preserved. Another impressive part of the church is the interior, which is adorned by fantastic frescos and icons of the Cretan religious painting school. It looks amazing when the sun is coming in from the spectacular windows.

On the iconostasis, , when you enter the church , is decorated with icons by Fotis Kontoglou, a Byzantine writer and icon-painter. The icons date back to around 1955 and show Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, John the Baptist and the Four Martyrs.

In the church basement is a spacious lecture room along with the chapel of Saint Savvas the Holy.

We were happy to have a little moment with this framing, it is, ofcourse, a very famous photo subject, and every tourist wants this framing.

Mili (also called: Myli) gorge is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The hamlets on Pano mil and Kato mill are situated along the gorge, while the ruins of a Venetian rural villa can be found. Significant part of the building structures are the watermills and their aquaduct , which are remarkable examples of pre-industrial manufacturing facilities in Crete. ((in dutch Kreta )

When you walk the Mily gorge you can also see several churches and chapels. Near the start you can see one of these, Agios Antonius, which is built into the rock face. The Mili gorge is around 10 km south of Rethymno.

Restaurants with delicious food.

A little marina with some boats, a blue sky, nice people, calm water, what more can one ask for when on holiday?

Rethymno is located on the north coast of Crete, and is the island's third largest city with a population of around 40,000.

The layout of Rethymno is directly linked to the sea, with the main Venetian street, the Ruga Maistra (today's coastal Venizelou Avenue) running parallel to the sea. The town still maintains an old aristocratic appearance, with buildings dating from the 16th century characterised by arched doorways and grand stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, and the small Venetian harbour whose lighthouse can be seen here.

Cats in Crete provide countless iconic images of Greece and Greek Island life - whole calendars are devoted to them, and you can see prints, photographs and paintings depicting felines of all shapes and sizes, cleverly composed against backgrounds of brightly coloured doors, windows and flower pots, or in the arms of children.

Many visitors to Greece are struck by the sight of legions of cats roaming the streets, dosing in the sun at archaeological sites (as here), and loitering around tavernas looking for a handout. Seen here is the youngest of several who had made one of the few shaded areas of the Fortezza of Rethymno their haunt that afternoon.

Rethymno is located on the north coast of Crete, and is the island's third largest city with a population of around 40,000. It sits within the eponymous prefecture of Rethymno which spans from the north to the south of this portion of the island.

Magnificent beaches are found along the coasts of Rethymno, both on the northern and the southern side of the prefecture, with those beaches on the northern side being more organised and popular with hotels and tourist facilities.

The city's own beach, seen here at sunrise, lies only a few minutes walk from the Venetian harbour for which Rethymno is known and which can be seen in numerous other photographs from this recent Crete series.

streets of Rethymno, Crete

Rethymno (Greek: Ρέθυμνο, [ˈreθimno], also Rethimno, Rethymnon, Réthymnon, and Rhíthymnos) is a city of approximately 40,000 people in Greece, the capital of Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete, a former Latin Catholic bishopric as Retimo(–Ario) and former Latin titular see.

Rethymno was originally built during the Minoan civilization (ancient Rhithymna and Arsinoe). The city was prominent enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town: two dolphins in a circle.

This region as a whole is rich with ancient history, most notably through the Minoan civilisation centred at Kydonia east of Rethymno. Rethymno itself began a period of growth when the Venetian conquerors of the island decided to put an intermediate commercial station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility in the process. Today's old town (palia poli) is almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice. It is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete.

From circa 1250 the city was the see of the Latin Diocese of Retimo, which was renamed Retimo–Ario after the absorption in 1551 of the Diocese of Ario and as suppressed only after the Turkish conquest.

The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. The Venetian Loggia houses the information office of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. A Wine Festival is held there annually at the beginning of July. Another festival, in memory of the destruction of the Arkadi Monastery, is held on 7–8 November.

The wild gorge of Kotsifou begins at the village of Kannevos and ends at the village of Plakias, whose small harbour is seen here. The gorge is just 10m wide at its entrance but widens out to 600m. It is 1800m long in total and has almost perpendicular walls which reach a height of 600m.

The first official mention of Plakias was in 1961, when it was recorded in a census as the permanent home of six fishermen. The location is characterised by a big crescent bay holding a fine beach between the two immense natural gorges of Kotsifou and and Kourtaliiotiko.
