At Pickaway, Route 3 diverges from Route 219 and eventually ends up following the little watercourse known as "Wolf CreeK" (there have been no wolves in this area for over a century, though Coyotes have recently moved back in). The watercourse eventually enters the Greenbrier River just south of this town which is our next stop on Route 3, Alderson. Alderson is probably best known, regrettably as the location of one of the main Federal Correctional Facilities for Females. Folks as diverse as "Tokyo Rose," "Axis Sally," "Lynette Fromm, and Martha Stewart have called the prison at Alderson their home. This is a shot of the Monroe side of Alderson. Sortly after passing this spot, Route 3 crosses the Greenbrier River on a bridge and enters, albeit briefly, into one of the more storied counties in West Virginia, Greenbrier. It then immediately turns Southwest and leaves Greenbrier for Summers County.

There was a woman in the shop that laughed at me for taking a picture of it. I didn't care.

In the wake of the #ZumaUnrest insurrection in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng that saw thousands of looters strip and, on occasions, burn down retail stores, residents have had to queue for food at retail outlets that open up only under heavy guard from private security companies and police. In the weeks to come there is expected to be widespread food insecurity as the supply chains for many communities, particularly in the rural areas and townships will need to be rebuilt from scratch. Communities across economic and colour lines are already uniting to build capacity to feed hungry communities.

Red Hen Fabrics is one of our town's unique shops. My wife and I love to browse the fabrics and see the quilts that are on display. You can also see quilts being made there from time to time.

Disclosure: My wife, Donna, and I have no business interest or investment in Red Hen Fabrics. We just like the place.

In the days before there were Supermarkets, Big Box Stores etc., every town of a decent size had a market building built by the town and run by it. The local farmers came here to sell their produce.

A £2 bargain in a weekend flea market - the 1953 List of Branches of W. H. Smith's and the Rules to be observed by managers and staffs of the bookshops and bookstalls. It is a really useful snapshot showing the branches, bookshops and bookstalls, such as at railway stations, operated by this famous chain of newsagents and booksellers.

The branches are sub-divided into "A" Houses, overseas shops, shops with tea rooms, shops with printing works, branches at hotels and clubs, and sub-branches that included many of the station platform kiosks. The 'Rules' are suitably of their age; a huge emphasis on not disseminating Libel and all staff being required to give three months notice of the intention to marry!

When the light is right and, the wood is still damp; you can see the 90 year old painted sign: "DUSTERS FOR RENT."

Dusters for riding the open stagecoaches were rented at many stores and were a major source of income during the stagecoach days.

The practice lasted through the early days of automobile touring as well.

The white log signs dates from early post war, (WW II,) era.
