HTML5 APIs Will Change the Web… And Your Designs
Jen Simmons, Designer
For the last twenty years, we have been creating websites from inside of a certain set of constraints—inside the limits of the technology that runs the web. We became so used to those constraints, we stopped thinking about them. But HTML5 changes many of these limits. The new HTML specs define a lot more than markup—there’s a lot about databases, communication protocols, and how websites & browsers talk to each other. It’s radical stuff that will redefine the creature formerly known as the “web page.” In this talk, Jen will walk us through the new possibilities created by HTML5’s APIs and how they will shape the web of the future.
I've been meaning to make a splash page with some links to my social junk for a while, but I wanted to execute this idea that involved foods, which made it a little harder. But now it's done! Yay! Eventually I want to have a lot more to the site, but I also knew I needed to start somewhere.
Anyway, the how to is basically that I melted white chocolate in a ziploc, cut a tiny hole in the end, then did the lettering on wax paper. After it had hardened I peeled it off and transferred it to the table setup and photographed it. Meghan helped me get my learn on with writing in chocolate. Then I coded up the page with Philip so that it has variations if you are on a phone, tablet, or desktop. Fancypantsy. Thanks, Phil!

A side effect of using responsive techniques to build the new WDCS site is getting nice surprises like this. On a whim, I decided to check it on my Kindle whilst on the train home, and it just worked.

I took the opportunity to borrow an Android device from a friend while we were in the pub. It worked. Previously I'd only tested on the simulator.
