Recent research conducted by Loyola University New Orleans biology professor Patricia Dorn, Ph.D., shows that more than 60 percent of the triatomine bugs, or kissing bugs as they are more commonly known, found in the New Orleans area are infected with the Chagas parasite. Chagas disease can lead to heart disease, and it is the leading cause of heart disease in Central and South America. Dorn’s research will be published in an upcoming edition of the Journal of Medical Entomology.

Mickey Leland research associate Julia Lauterbach working in the lab with mentor Candice Ellison. Julia is working with the Energy Conversion Engineering Division at NETL studying Engineering/Environmental Science. Her project is the development of Microwave-specific Catalysts for Methane Pyrolysis. This project will study the impact of specific physical properties of solid oxide catalysts on their conversion efficiency
of methane to hydrogen and solid carbon products via microwave-enhanced methane pyrolysis. Specifically,
complex metal oxides with an AxByOz formula will be synthesized in the lab with varied concentrations of transition
metal substitutions. The materials made will be characterized for microwave-specific properties (i.e. dielectric,
magnetic) before being tested in the reaction. A potential correlation of these properties to the reaction and
product selectivity will be explored.
The participant will learn about alternative energy sources, like RF fields and microwaves, and how the properties of
various materials impact their interaction with the electromagnetic fields. Further, they will learn how to prepare
and characterize these materials to develop a correlation between synthesis method and microwave-related
properties. Finally, they will have opportunities to develop their written and spoken communication skills about
their findings to other researchers.

Abstract:
The field of digital signal processing (DSP) has been a very active area of research and application for more than six decades. This broad development has paralleled in time the rapid development of high-speed electronic digital computers, microelectronics and integrated circuit fabrication technologies. An ever-increasing assortment of integrated circuits specifically tailored to perform common DSP functions is available to the design engineer as system building blocks or parts-in-trade. DSP methodologies have been applied to consumer electronics, communications, automotive electronics, instrumentation, medical electronics, tomography and acoustic imaging, cartography, seismology, speech recognition, robotics and other fields. In his talk, Dr. Mitra will provide a brief overview of the initial developments in DSP and review some of the important advances made during the nearly-60-year period of its growth, and will describe a number of its key applications. He will conclude with speculation on DSP’s future trends and directions.
Dr. Sanjit K. Mitra is a Research Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Mitra has published over 700 papers in the areas of analog and digital signal processing, and image and video processing. He has also authored and co-authored twelve books, and holds six patents. Dr. Mitra has served IEEE in various capacities including service as the President of the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society in 1986.
Dr. Mitra has received many awards including the 2009 Athanasios Papoulis Award of the European Association for Signal Processing, the 2005 SPIE Technology Achievement Award of the International Society for Optical Engineers; the University Medal of the Slovak Technical University, Bratislava, Slovakia in 2005; the 2006 IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal; and the 2013 IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award. He is the co-recipient of the 2000 Blumlein-Browne-Willans Premium of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (London). He has been awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees from the Tampere University of Technology, Finland, the Technical University of Bucharest, Romania, and the Technical University of Iasi, Romania.
He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, an Academician of the Academy of Finland, a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Arts, a foreign member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, international member of the Croatian Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Engineering, Mexico, and a Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Mitra is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.

So...I've been trying to get the second prototype happening enough to send out to one of our fine Fools here who plays in an AC/DC cover band. He's got a casino gig later this month and has graciously offered to let me use some footage in the Kickstarter demo.
So I was originally just planning to use epoxy to hold the old bushings in place. Not a good fix, but workable in the short term. Then I saw these bridges, which aren't as tall as the Badass knockoff that came on the prototype.
You want the pull as straight as possible, which is why it's important for the top height to work with the neck angle. It's also problematic with the Badass design that the saddles ride so high over the tension line of the bridge. I call it the, "Mauser Effect," because I'm a nerd.
Heh...the "Broomhandle" Mauser that was used for Han Solo's blaster (you knew this was a sci-fi analogy before I even started, right?) is kind of famous for the grip being so low (Solo?) that, when fired, the recoil attempts to spin the firearm out of your hand. I mean, Winston Churchill carried one and they were apparently reliable German-engineered hardware, but the idea is for the force ("Use the Force!") to be transferred to the anchor point (meaty grip) in as straight a line as possible, so's it don't turn into a pinwheel and fly out of your hand.
Same thing with guitar bridges. You want all the loading to be as linear as possible for a whole variety of reasons and the Badass wraparound is like the Mauser of the guitar world in that respect.
So I got this flatter, better designed bridge...and it's a couple of millimeters too wide to ride the existing span of the anchor studs.
HOWEVER...the new studs and bushings are fatter than the ones that came with the prototypes. I could pull those out and push them in by hand. This pair of bushings required me to get out my Tiny Whacker...which sounds like a terrible thing to have...at least if you want to get dates. Heh...anyway, these may do the trick. They seem to be in there really tight now. Even tighter than with the shims.
This had a set of 9-46 strings on it. I think I'm going to go out tomorrow and get some 9-42s. Maybe a little less tension and the new hardware will make this work well enough for the demo.
BTW, I am super-psyched to get footage of the Malcontent being played by an AC/DC cover band. I mean, that's perfect, right? Thanks go out to our intrepid Fooligan!

Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has teamed with the School of Information Systems at Singapore Management University (SMU) to establish the Living Analytics Research Center (LARC).
The center will draw on the cross-disciplinary strengths of SMU and CMU faculty and span the two university campuses. It will be physically anchored at SMU’s School of Information Systems in Singapore and at Heinz College's iLab in Pittsburgh. The LARC will develop new approaches to understanding consumer and social behavior that will benefit consumers, producers and distributors of digital goods and services.
Hey, just as a heads-up. I am finally starting to get on top of my effects backlog. I'm really sorry for the wait. The cataract surgery and then getting glasses because it left me farsighted and then getting used to working with glasses and then the dog ate my homework and I had a flat tire and there was a swarm of locusts and...
