NS 92G runs through the siding at Robertson all the way to Ferguson at restricted speed while doing that “The Brick” will scan the track and send data to NS 36 “Research” aka the passenger car behind the brick where they’ll analyze the data (probably not right away) and see what might need to be fixed or changed with the tracks, grades, switches, etc. After 92G makes their run through the siding they will then back up to Robertson on the main at restricted speed going backwards also doing the same thing they just had done to the siding, before they reached Berkeley they were doing this to every siding on the line before which helped it make better time lighting wise into St. Louis. After it does it’s run through the main it’ll then head East to Luther where it’ll scan the inbound and outbound tracks

The fascinating Stratosphere Chamber exhibit at Brooklands Museum.

In the late 1940's, the eminent engineer Barnes Wallis was engaged in high altitude research for Vickers at Brooklands, and he designed a huge chamber to test the effects of high altitude and low temperature on aircraft structures. The installation could create an environment which was equivalent to a height of 70,000 feet, and was used from 1951 until the early 1980s. Here a Vickers Vanguard nose section is seen inside, but the chamber could be used for whole aircraft, for example the Supermarine Scimitar and the de Havilland Sea Vixen were tested here.

When in use, a massive door was moved across on rails from the lefthand side to seal the chamber. Vacuum pumps sucked the air out to replicate the low pressure at high altitude, and a refrigeration plant of pumps, evaporators and condensers cooled the chamber down.

Part of my PhD photo project; capturing moments that portray the daily rituals of completing a PhD. For instance, I wanted to capture with this series the fact that I always have a cup of coffee when I'm working.

Hertshooi

Slimbridge in Gloucestershire has themed areas representing different wetlands throughout the world and there habitats with associated birds. Over the last few years they have done a lot of work here to improve the visitor experience. In the summer months you can walk down to the River Severn estuary through the massive feed beds. We had a very interesting day out here yesterday, very enjoyable!

Build for my article on New Elementary all about the latest wave of parts added to Pick a Brick this month.

I only had one of each seed part to play with so I went for an asymmetric vehicle using the transparent curved corner panel (5925). It turned out to be a bit of a slog to complete but I got there in the end - thanks to some Lime green frying pans of all things.

Trying my own version of the set, adding a few more features but still keeping the chibi style. Because SCIENCE!

The Individual Research and Combat Device is designed to help the operator get the most from the environment serving not only as a weapon but as an extension of the user's own body.

The IRCD features the J-Tac's TAT-5 (Telemetry Aiming Tool). Inspired by technology made for space probes, this small computer makes readings of the surrounding area, indicating levels of H2O, O2, C and other elements. This way, the operators can find not only hostile individuals but important resources for the exploration mission. The readings are constantly updated and the data is sent to the main research center, contributing for further reconnaissance of the ambient. The TAT-5 also works as a red dot sight unit and has a built in compass.

Due to concerns with ammo, J-Tac installed an ultra sonic repellent in the stock, similar to the one used against bats but with more efficiency. It's able to stun the creatures living in the forest due to their enhanced hearing, allowing an emergency escape if ammo runs out. It's battery lasts for 2 hours, leaving the soldiers with plenty of time for a back-up plan.

The IRCD can be used for a great number of roles from Assault Squads to Security Teams due to its folding and collapsible stock and barrel extension.

Sorry for any mistakes. I'm not used to a more formal and technical language.

Some new additions to the living room today! John Meyer, the big guy from Newform Research dropped off (and set in place) my new speakers today.I had a vision of what I wanted and John brought it to life even better than I had hoped. Many thanks John, it is a pleasure to deal with you. Now to keep working on the home theatre, also with John's speakers in the mix!

The card catalog in the Miller Library at Hopkins Marine Station is no longer used, but still sits in a position of prominence, probably because it is such a beautiful design, and also for nostalgic reasons. The "art" of researching using the card catalog is now a thing of the past.

It was really dark in the library; fortunately this camera can "see in the dark" - ISO 12800 !

Mark’s pipetting skills are through the roof! Well not literally. It’s crazy how being an astronaut makes you learn and do so many different things. Mark was working on NASA's Celestial immunity experiment, that requires astronauts to be adept at the laboratory skills... in microgravity! The experiment designers do everything they can to make it as easy as possible as we are not experienced lab workers, but we do what is required, and this is why we spend so much time training for our flights.

The ARVW in the VW museum in Wolfsburg.

The ARVW (Aerodynamic Research Volkswagen) concept car has been built by Volkswagen in the late 1970s specially as an object of aerodynamic research of the Volkswagen company to trace correlation between a vehicle body shape and fuel consumption at a high speed. A tuned six-cylinder turbodiesel engine and standard gearbox were used while the body was made from aluminium and composite materials. In 1980 it was the fastest diesel car in the world, reaching the top speed at 362.07 km/h.

Still can't beat a good book (The Archaeology of New York State) but couple it with the tablet and technology, and the possibilities are endless!

It's just a bit of a side hobby of mine to better understand the ancient settlement and history of this area. As it stands, the last book written about it was finished in the early 60's. Time for an update!

Uploading a series of bee shots I took in our back and front yard. Lately in past few years, I have seen a sudden decline in the number of bees I see hovering around. I did some research and found that's a global phenomenon and could be due to some pesticides as well as mass destruction of their habitats with increased urbanization. Very concerning to see something severe right in your own backyard!

Cedar Waxwings are not uncommon at all, but this was the first one I'd seen this year. I saw three of these at the Patuxent Research Refuge, Laurel, Maryland.

Brush tip inks on paper , (Alkaline Current-Sea project)

(This is what happens to me when I spend a week researching the Prohibition and the growth in Organized Crime around it.)

Chief Anderson stood in front of my desk, glaring across the piles of papers, photos, and evidence boxes that supposedly sat upon my desk, buried somewhere beneath. I last saw it early January. It was now mid September. I pondered when if there really had ever been a desk there, and not just a mountain. More specifically, I pondered this to avoid acknowledging that Chief Anderson's glare was fixed on me specifically. He cough, clearing his throat. I shifted uncomfortably in my rickety office chair.

"You do this, Frank, and it'll be your badge."

"Yeah, Anders, I know."

Like it mattered. I was slowly growing the suspicion that the badge was growing useless except as something to hold me back. Perhaps I ought to go vigilante, get more work done that way...

"No, you don't. Look, you're a good officer, but you just can't keep playing solo here. I warned you, disobey orders again and you are out."

"Yeah, I know."

It was a favorite threat of his, and I know I deserved it, sure.

"And that was three of your... stunts ago. Three!"

"Yeah."

Two, actually.

"Look, even if you are right, you know I can't authorize this. Sure, the system above is corrupt, and I've tried my best play straight, but this is risky. If I don't put my foot down, there are way too many political connections at stake. It'll be my neck, Frank, and yours too."

"Yeah, probably."

An idea was starting to form in the back of my head just then. Yes, I think I knew how this'd work out.

"Dammit, Frank, don't be like that. Look, I know you've got your man, but you and I both know that it isn't that easy. He is an untouchable, Frank, I'm sorry but it is true."

"What if I go against orders?"

He didn't like this, and he instantly saw where I was going.

"No, Frank, just no. Don't start thinking like that. That is foolish, dangerous."

"I'm serious, Anders."

"Yeah, I know, Frank, I know. That was what I was afraid of."

"So then, I'll be going."

He sighed, pounded his fist on my desk, or for that matter the pile of papers that had overgrown my desk, with frustration.

"Yeah. I'll call Officer Lewis into my office. He'll forget to lock the armory."

"Thanks Anders."

"Just don't get shot up, Frank."

I nodded, sitting up and reaching for my coat.

"Yes, Anders."

"And don't take anyone else with you, I don't want you getting any of the younger officers caught up in your schemes."

I paused. Bob Schilling had worked with me on several parts of this case. The kid was persistent, he'd follow even if I didn't ask.

"Even Bob?"

"Especially Bob."

"He'll follow me anyways."

Anders sighed. "Yes, yes he will. I just want to know I tried, in case something happens to him."

"You're a good man, Anders."

"Thanks Frank."

I fished around my desk, finding my hat in an emptied evidence box.

"And Frank."

"Yeah?"

"If you don't come back with your man..."

"I know, I know... I'm gone."

"Yes."

Barcelona's Biomedical Research Park is a fantastic eco-friendly building wrapped with wooden louvers that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. Created by the architects Manuel Brullet i Tenas and Albert de Pineda i Àlvarez, the elliptical volume features a large central courtyard that floods the interior with natural light. The iconic medical shelter is topped with an array of solar panels and boasts amazing views over the deep blue sea.

Surrounded by Barcelona’s seaside buildings — including Frank Gehry’s ‘Fish’ — the Biomedical Research Park seems to be floating just above the ground. The building spans a whopping 600,000 square foot over 9-floors, and its entire exterior facade is clad in red cedar louvers that protect the interior from heavy sunlight and hot Spanish summers. Long decked balconies for socializing and breathing fresh salty air have been placed throughout the building’s internal facade, providing researchers with a great working environment.

A central courtyard provides daylighting while sheltering three olive trees and some stark concrete seats. The interior spaces are minimal and modern, with concrete ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and wood paneling matching the building’s protective shell. Energy-efficient, iconic, and open to the sea, Barcelona’s Biomedical Research Park stands out from the crowd.

While I was parking my car by the Park for my walk yesterday, I was greeted by a loud rhythmic music with different colors in the air and on those present having a wonderful time! The last time I saw something like this was the year before COVID 19! I have never seen one like it before so I did a little research and learned that this is called the Holi Festival, also known as Spring Festival, Festival of Colors and Festival of Love. Here's a link for those interested to know more about this joyful festival .. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holi

BTW...a couple of little girls with hands full of colorful dye did approach me and asked if they could splash some color on me but I politely declined. Thank goodness they asked me first!

Thank you all so much for stopping by and for the kind comments and favs. They are very much appreciated!

.

You can't be squeamish in space 💉 In these pictures, Shane and I are drawing blood for the Functional Immune experiment 💪 Researchers analyse these samples for any subtle changes in our immune systems and compare this with other health information we report. Knowing what happens to the immune system before symptoms appear, in space or on Earth, could help pinpoint the onset of illness for better monitoring or treatment
