The bridge was built from 1751 to 1793. The architect was Jose Martin de Aldehuela.

The bridge is 98 metres high. It does not go all the way down, but stands above the gorge’s floor. The gorge is 120 metres under you, when you stand on the bridge. The many pillars of stone are needed to support the bridge, at such a height. During the Spanish Civil War, Ronda like most of inland Andalucia sat firmly in the republican zone against the fascist rising. In the early days of the war in 1936 chaos was widespread, and in Ronda as in many Andalucian towns and villages executions were widespread. Fascists from Ronda were clubbed and hurled to their deaths from the Puente Nuevo into the gorge, however the perpetrators were from Malaga, not from Ronda. In Ronda, as was the case in many towns and villages, executions were carried out by others from outside.

The Puente Nuevo is where the wind has many times blown people off it, including the architect.

Note for my americans followers :

In France "republican" isn't as strongly tied to a party as it is in the US. We do have the party "Les Républicains", which was once a big party... Then did only 4,7% on the presidential elections of 2022.

Here "Republican" is tied to this street "Le Boulevard de la République".

"We are the party of white racial grievance. We believe those marching in Black Lives Matter protests are “thugs.” We see the term “systemic racism” as an unfair attack on white people. We support keeping Confederate monuments on their pedestals, and we have no idea why anyone would consider Confederate flags a problem. We are equal-opportunity racists. We see Latino immigrants as “bad hombres.” And we believe that using the racist term “kung flu” to describe covid-19 is hilarious, not least because we are convinced the covid-19 pandemic is basically over, anyway. Who cares what pointy-headed “experts” might say, we know in our hearts that patriotic Americans don’t wear masks." - Eugene Robinson, Columnist, The Washington Post

America seems to be heading towards depression. Bush (republican) inherited the largest surplus in history from a democratic president Clinton and is leaving behind the largest ever deficit in history for another Democratic president to mend. Bush taxed the poor and subsidised the rich.

The beautiful America that we knew is gone in past eight years of Bush's presidency. We can not complain because once he came to power by selection of Supreme court but the second term was purely because we voted for him. We were too scared by his lies that Sadam and countries like Iraq were going to destroy us. Iraq had no power and no terrorists on its soil when we attacked and occupied it. Iraq was clean of Al-Qauida, we brought them in. Now we pay the price.

This is part of the Ebro battlefield (1938), in Southern Catalonia.

The Republican frontline positions in the cemetery hill seen from the fascist positions in the village of Vilalba dels Arcs. This small valley was quite almost impossible to pass without being slaughtered by the rifle and MG fire from the medieval village.

On July 26, the 33rd Republican Brigade captured the cemetery of Vilalba dels Arcs, thus being located just east of the town. But the valley which separates them from the village is very easy to defend from a natural fortress such as Vilalba, especially from the east.

From the 27th to the 31st of July. the republicans will try to conquer Vilalba, arriving apparently at the first houses of the village, but being rejected. In fact, on the 31st they leave the cemetery itself, as it is too exposed to enemy fire. Thus ends the fighting in this sector of the battle.

The Battle of the Ebro (July 25 - November 16, 1938) was the most important and deadlier of the Spanish Civil War. There are those who also consider it the most decisive, but I think that unfortunately the war was already decided long before, at least since the breaking of the front of Aragon on March 9 of the same year.

The battle began with the greatest offensive made by the Republican forces, when they crossed the river Ebro between Mequinensa and Amposta (especially between Riba-roja and Miravet), and advanced to the line La Pobla de Massaluca -Vilalba dels Arcs -Gandesa - Serra de Pandols . But in just 48 hours, the dazzling advance was stopped short. Then Franco decided to crush the republican forces hill by hill (with massive artillery and bomber barrages), in a battle of attrition identical to the First World War for which the Republicans had no resources or alternative, especially with the river behind them. The main assaults, which lasted from August 10 to October 29, were concentrated in a very small and devastated area: the triangle Vertex Gaeta - Corbera - Camposines.

Finally, a final offensive on October 30 occupied the ridge of the Serra de Cavalls, making the entire Republican bridgehead unsustainable, which managed, however, to withdraw in an orderly manner until November 16. But the damage was already done, and there were no forces left for a proper defense of Catalonia, which fell three months later. Then, fascist darkness.

But it also was a combat scenery for the high watermark of the early Republican ofensive in the Ebro. This was the furthest the Republican soldiers reached, during the siege of Gandesa, specially on the 31th of July.

As it is, Republicans can not understand the concept of a "transgender person", nor do most try. How could they possibly deal with an ambassador who has multiple genders and is urgently in need of the facilities?

Please don't misunderstand-I feel that their focus on restroom assignment is totally inappropriate and an insult to all Americans. My attempt was to ridicule the perpetrators, not the situation.

This is part of the Ebro battlefield (1938), in Southern Catalonia.

The last and dramatic combats of the battle took place in a vital position to protect the retreat of the Republican Army: "Los Raimats", north of La Fatarella. Sensing the paramount importance of this position, the Republicans conscientiously fortified it, with many trenches connecting eight concrete bunkers, most armed with machine guns but at least one with an anti-tank gun. The final assault began on November 14: the fascist troops occupied La Fatarella and continued towards Raimats with many tanks. German Commander Gustav Trippe died in the first assault. The defenders of the XV Brigade lost some positions (hill 554, were this bunker stands), but held on, while the rest of the Republican Army crossed the Ebro by Flix and Riba-roja.

On 15th November the attack increased, with much artillery and aviation bombing. T26 tanks fired directly at the bunkers' embrasures, killing the defenders. This allowed the infantry to assault the last defenses of Hill 562, killing almost all the defenders. Riba-roja and Flix fell on the 16th, but the Ebro army had not been annihilated.

This bunker, blown up after the war to take advantage of the iron (as in most bunkers at the time), is part of the first line of Los Raimats, which fell on the 14th.

Tic toc....tic....toc...tic...toc.........? The conversation is pretty serious!

Soon after Trump took office – he spearheaded the Republican war on our climate, our health and our lives. One of the first steps that he took was to silence the National Park Service on social media. I follow them on Facebook and almost immediately after they were silenced a Alt National Park Service Facebook page popped up. I follow them too. Yesterday they published an overview of the Trump administrations 2017 acts against the environment and wildlife. The list is not yet complete and doesn’t mention things like the Bonn Climate Conference that was an absolute debacle. The list is difficult to read - they are working on a timeline for their website that will be launched next week. The list is breathtaking in scope and the intent is astonishing. Try to have a good day.

1937 and now, Spanish Civil War. Siege od Madrid, aftermath of a bombing. Two republican soldiers.

Martin de los Heros street, about 500 meters far from the frontline and close to the center of the city.

Madrid suffered bombings during the entire war, specially in the center and in this area, Argüelles, a district close to the frontline. Artillery and air bombings killed over 1500 people during the first months of the siege.

When Madrid was attacked by Franco forces in November 1936, many of the city's inhabitants fled to safety.

By the end of November over 250,000, about one-fifth of the city's total population, had relocated themselves to safer zones in Valencia and Barcelona. When the fighting stabilized in December this spontaneous and voluntary emigration slowed dramatically. Then the government waged a campaign to encourage people to leave the capital.

Donald Trump opened a Pandora’s Box when he and the Republican Party politicized the coronavirus. When he called it the “Kung Flu” and the “Wuhan Virus,” racists attacked Asian-Americans. As a new virus, we have no natural immunity. But Trump refused to heed the warnings to social distance and wear masks, playing down the severity of the disease for political gain. Instead, he promoted fake cures and dismissed science experts. His acolytes followed suit. Rather than follow the science, right-wing charlatans continue to tout fake COVID cures. Only recently has Trump promoted vaccines and boosters (in part to separate himself from potential presidential rivals like Ron DeSantis). Other GOP lawmakers have privately protected themselves while publicly refusing to convey the importance of being immunized. And over 800,000 Americans have died.

People reacted with anger and pseudo-science theories when President Biden first appealed to Americans to “get the shot.” Incentives encouraged vaccinations. While these motivated some, it was much less than needed to reach herd immunity. With vaccination rates lagging, President Biden forced the issue with mandates for businesses with over 100 employees. And now conservatives on the Supreme Court have overruled those.

Adam Galinsky, a professor of leadership and ethics at Columbia Business School, recently wrote about the “psychology of regret” and its effect on vaccine hesitancy. “Alongside skepticism of institutions and experts, exposure to misinformation, and other often-cited reasons for resisting vaccines sits a clear emotional explanation: Many people are afraid that they’ll make a bad decision.” Fear can cause people to hesitate, no matter what the incentives might be. It may not seem rational, but many put more weight on the negative ramifications of their decisions than on any potential positive outcomes. They assign their actions greater importance than the consequences of not acting.

Ironically, this sense of regret explains why mandates have been so successful. When Biden first announced these mandates, the largest police union in New York City went to court to block them. They said they would lose thousands of officers who would quit rather than get inoculated. In reality, only three dozen officers ended up refusing. United Airlines instituted its mandate, and 99% of its workforce is vaccinated. This week they reported no deaths due to COVID. Mandates take the decision-making out of the individual’s hands. With the fear of making a wrong decision eliminated, most get vaccinated.

One of the most inane and insensitive protests over these requirements comes from those who show their opposition by wearing yellow Stars of David. Nazis required Jews to wear these stars with the word “Jude” at all times. Today’s protesters liken vaccine mandates to the persecution of Jews during World War II. They equate vaccination requirements with being sent to the gas chamber. At least, they say, it’s a slippery slope. They wear these stars as badges of resistance. However, Nazis forced Jews to wear them as signs of exclusion and disdain, signifying they were less than human. This false equivalent insults all Jews and their families who suffered during the Holocaust.

In June 2021, Jim Walsh, a Republican Washington State Representative, posted a video on Facebook showing him speaking to a group of conservatives while wearing the star. Posting on the social media platform, he said, “It’s an echo from history. In the current context, we’re all Jews.” We’re all Jews? During the Charlottesville protests, neo-Nazi’s chanted, “Jews will not replace us.” Now people are using the symbols of our annihilation to protest vaccine mandates. We’re tired of being used as scapegoats by neo-Nazis and examples of persecution by anti-vaxxers.

On November 14, 2021, anti-mandate protesters displayed the swastika and the yellow star in front of the offices of New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, who is Jewish. Dinowitz has been a vigorous proponent of mandates. The crowd gathered to protest Dinowitz’s bill, requiring all students be immunized against COVID in order to attend school. Republican gubernatorial candidate, Rob Astorino, organized the rally. Assemblyman Dinowitz stated, “People are free to express their opinions on vaccine policy and on any issue, but I draw the line at swastikas. [T]o stand next to swastikas and yellow Stars of David outside of a Jewish legislator’s office shows a lack of integrity at best and an embrace of right-wing extremism at worst.”

In a hearing by the Kansas Special Committee on Government Overreach and the Impact of COVID-19 Mandates, former Kansas City, Kansas mayoral candidate Daran Duffy, explained why he and his family were wearing these stars. “The reason I’m wearing the star is not to be offensive, but it’s to remember, and for everybody else to call to remembrance World War II. The Jewish people were forced to wear a yellow star to identify them as Jews. And they were ushered off to the death camps in accordance with that. There were medical tests; there were experimentations done on human people. And while this hasn’t reached that deprivation, we are definitely moving in that direction.” Despite his sincerity, he is oblivious to the insensitivity of his protest.

And, just this week, Ohio Republican Congressman Warren Davidson likened vaccine mandates to Nazi atrocities by tweeting a photo of a Nazi Gesuntheitspaß (health passport) with the text, “It’s been done before. #DoNotComply” He went on to say, “Let’s recall that the Nazis dehumanized Jewish people before segregating them, segregated them before imprisoning them, imprisoned them before enslaving them, and enslaved them before massacring them.”

People receiving COVID shots are not part of an experiment. The actions of Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who conducted sadistic medical procedures on Auschwitz children, are a far cry from the science behind these vaccines. For over two decades, researchers have been studying mRNA, the foundation of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Scientists conducted vigorous trials involving thousands of volunteers before their release. No one forced people to enroll in these trials. It was an altruistic choice meant to help others.

Mandates do not force people to get the vaccine. They have a choice. Yes, it’s a serious one. Their lives and their livelihoods may depend on what choice they make. And there are serious consequences for refusal, like losing one’s job. Without the vaccine, they may suffer a horrible death or lifelong after-effects. Even if you survive on a ventilator in the ICU, your life may never be the same. The coronavirus is and will continue to be a public health hazard.

Our personal decisions affect the people around us. Children and the immunocompromised are at risk. Many of these “hesitants” are ardent supporters of “American Exceptionalism,” believing that God has bestowed special blessings on our country and its people. But there is nothing exceptional about this selfishness.

The exploitation of the Star of David is part of the conflict over racial identity politics. Many Whites are afraid of being marginalized. And the GOP creates false wedge issues that stoke this fear as a way of igniting voters’ outrage. They’ve been employing this tactic for decades. So why is everyone outraged? Because the GOP wants us to be outraged. Because their hold on power depends on it.

Since this pandemic began, we have lived in a world without reason. American society has devolved into a culture where many equate vaccine mandates with Nazi atrocities. Critical thinking is often missing. Jewish identity is just one tangent of racial injustice. White racists often invoke Jew’s supposed political and financial power for their hatred. We can often pass for “white-white.” But we’re really “off-white.” When White racial fears abound, Jews are targeted.

Fear of losing control fuels opposition to vaccine mandates. But anti-vaxxers are not innocent victims of a frightening mob with an irrational agenda. COVID is a dire public health issue. And resistance to vaccines, mandates, and fear of make-believe persecution does not make them martyrs.

One may object to mandates, but don’t use symbols of real suffering to do so. Signs of our persecution are not yours to appropriate whenever you see fit. It feigns solidarity with Jews. But, in reality, these protesters are using us. Until you see your family marched off to the death camps, never to see them again, stop using the Star of David to compare your fears and outrage to the extermination of European Jewry. You don’t know what real suffering is. Stop living your lives as if you do.

....which is not called Trump

Senator Johnson, what were you thinking? This isn’t an exclamation. I really want to know.

In one of the most recent iterations of tone-deaf statements made by politicians, Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said this on Joe Pag’s conservative radio talk show (emphasis mine):

“Even though those thousands of people that were marching to the Capitol were trying to pressure people like me to vote the way they wanted me to vote, I knew those were people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break the law, and so I wasn’t concerned.”

“Now, had the tables been turned—Joe, this could get me in trouble—had the tables been turned, and President Trump won the election and those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters, I might have been a little concerned.”

It was both shocking and amazing to hear someone—an elected Senator, no less—say such a thing without realizing the impact of his words. This is the definition of institutional racism: thought patterns so embedded in society, some see nothing wrong in expressing them, let alone thinking them. Did you say them to gain political currency, or do you believe them? As Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. recently said, “Republicans and conservatives have used culture wars as a way of encouraging working-class voters to cast their ballots on the basis of social, religious, and racial issues rather than on economic questions.” Your comments, shocking as they are to me, are chum, thrown into political waters to rile up your Republican base. In the feeding frenzy, they ignore the economic precipice they live on and, worse, don’t even realize how unimportant their lives are to the GOP.

The Justice Department’s mounting evidence against those who stormed the Capitol doesn’t correlate with your sentiments. In response to criticism about your statement, you replied, “There were no racial undertones to my comments.” You’re right, Senator. These weren’t undertones; these were overt. Here are some facts that should interest you.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, federal prosecutor and former acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Michael R. Sherwin, said they were now in the process of prosecuting over 400 cases involving the January assault on the Capitol. “The bulk of those cases are federal criminal charges and significant felony charges: five, ten, twenty-year penalties…. Of those 400, we have over 100 who have been charged with assaulting federal officers and local police officers. Ten percent of the cases, I’ll call them more complex conspiracy cases—we do have evidence, it’s in the public record—where individual militia groups from different facets, Oath Keepers, Three Percenters, Proud Boys, did have a plan—we don’t know what the full plan is—to come to D.C., organize, breach the Capitol in some manner.” The investigation is only getting started.

Sherwin was an eyewitness to the insurrection. Dressed in his running clothes, he followed protesters from Donald Trump’s rally to the Capitol. “As the morning progressed, I noticed that some people were in tactical gear,” he said. “Those individuals, I noticed, left the speeches early. You could see it was getting more riled up. And it became more aggressive.” Prosecutors have charged many with obstruction of official government proceedings (the Electoral College count). Convictions could result in twenty-year felony sentences. The government has arrested two men for assaulting Capitol police officer Brian D. Sicknick, who later died of his injuries. If his autopsy shows their actions resulted in his death, they will be charged with murder.

Do you think, Senator, these people “truly respect law enforcement [and] would never do anything to break the law,” as you stated?

Covered live on TV, hundreds of thousands of Americans witnessed this breach. Rioters posted their own videos and photographs of their actions. Others proudly texted their involvement. The people you described as loving their country put members of Congress, the military, and police at risk. What’s so loving about that?

Politicians have been spinning their versions of events since the dawn of our country. During both the Reagan and George H. Bush administrations, Lee Atwater’s noxious tactics are the contemporary antecedent for the misleading hyperbole we experience today. Truth became malleable. Atwater’s support for making furloughed felon Willie Horton’s armed robbery and rape charges an issue during the 1988 presidential campaign against Democrat Michael Dukakis was instrumental in Bush overcoming a 17-point deficit to win the presidency. Atwater stated he would “strip the bark off the little bastard” and “make Willie Horton his running mate.” Trump’s “alternative facts” were the culmination of bending the truth for political gain. What’s fascinating is the traction these lies generate.

In 1987, the Federal Communications Commission rescinded the Fairness Doctrine, which required media outlets to present controversial issues fairly and balanced. “The Fairness Doctrine required that those who were talked about be given a chance to respond to the statements made by broadcasters.” The FCC believed this safeguard impinged on a person’s First Amendment rights, and they did away with it. Political discourse has digressed ever since.

“Cancel culture” has become our most recent ad hoc policing system to control the cacophony of voices and opinions on traditional and social media. But it’s often harsh and indiscriminate. A few months back, a Facebook friend wrote about some stress in their life, posting a sizeable animated emoji showing a round yellow face grinding its teeth. I responded to that emoji by saying, “relax” (I know firsthand the pain of bruxism—teeth-gnashing). A few minutes later, a well-known woman writer admonished me for telling any woman to relax. I only knew my friend via Facebook. And her handle was gender-neutral, so I didn’t realize she was a woman. I was going to clarify my response, but when I saw that 27 people had already liked her retort, I thought better of it. I felt ganged up upon and ridiculed unfairly. A simple question, “What did you mean?” would have cleared everything up quickly. Instead, I deleted my comment. But the feeling of being misunderstood without recourse stayed with me the rest of the day. Seeking context is a rare commodity. So that’s why I’m asking you, Senator, despite the facts, why did you say what you said?

Ultimately, it’s the responsibility of your Wisconsin constituents to judge your words and deeds. But that doesn’t mean the rest of us will stand by when you pass your judgments. They’re deadly.

And, yes, Senator Johnson, you are a racist.

47 REPUBLICAN SENATORS APPEAR TO HAVE BROKEN THE LAW IN A BIZARRE ATTEMPT TO UNDERMINE OUR DULY-ELECTED PRESIDENT AND HIS ADMINISTRATION AS THEY WRAP UP SENSITIVE NEGOTIATIONS INVOLVING NUCLEAR ARMS.

(See a complete list of these characters below)

One week after the Republican House hosted a head of state who used our Congress for a political stunt, against the will of our president, 47 Republican senators, including several who think they're viable candidates for the presidency, appear to have just broken the law signing a letter to Iran undermining sensitive negotiations between our two countries, telling the Iranian government they may not support any agreement President Obama's administration is working on with them.

Please join us in signing a PETITION TO FILE CHARGES AGAINST THESE 47 SENATORS who appear to be in violation of The Logan Act in attempting to undermine a nuclear agreement.

Vice President Joe Biden is quoted as saying:

"This letter, in the guise of a constitutional lesson, ignores two centuries of precedent and threatens to undermine the ability of any future American President, whether Democrat or Republican, to negotiate with other nations on behalf of the United States. Honorable people can disagree over policy. But this is no way to make America safer or stronger.

"Around the world, America's influence depends on its ability to honor its commitments. Some of these are made in international agreements approved by Congress. However, as the authors of this letter must know, the vast majority of our international commitments take effect without Congressional approval. ... They are essential tools to the conduct of our foreign policy, and they ensure the continuity that enables the United States to maintain our credibility and global leadership even as Presidents and Congresses come and go."

Biden went on to note that diplomatic recognition of China, the ending of the Vietnam War and the Iran hostage crisis were all ironed out without congressional approval.

HOW LONG WILL WE LET THESE IMBECILES AND AMATEURS TEAR DOWN OUR GOVERNMENT AND FURTHER ERODE DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CONFIDENCE IN THE UNITED STATES?

Tucker believes these 47 senators should be arrested, tried and convicted for treason. It appears that these "leaders" have violated THE LOGAN ACT in their move to undermine this country's potential nuclear agreement with Iran.

When will this end? There is only one answer. When you stop voting Republican.

Here's the complete list of senators (all Republican) who signed this letter to the government of Iran, deliberately undermining the good faith work of the American executive and his administration:
