Nearly 150 young girls and boys from the area of Cobán, Alta Verapaz, paricipated in our 3-day workshop for youth leaders last week! On day 1, the participants focused on gender, on the roles of women and men, on equity and differences. It was wonderful to see their involvement and how excited they were to be here! For many, coming to Cobán meant a long journey from the villages where they live with their families, many for the first time were this far away from home. Some only finished primary school and are not receiving any more education but they want to learn to make conscious decisions when it comes to family planning and help their peers and their communities do the same.

What is Sperm Motility & how it impacts Fertility?
Spermatozoon is a motile cell with a special ability to travel through the woman’s reproductive tract and fertilize an oocyte. To reach and penetrate the oocyte, spermatozoa should possess progressive motility. Therefore, motility is an important parameter during both natural and assisted conception. The global trend of progressive reduction in the number and motility of healthy spermatozoa in the ejaculate is associated with increased risk of infertility.

We were very excited to see Clara, who 4 years ago appeared in WINGS documentary with her husband. At the time, they had 3 children and Clara wanted to use contraception but her husband was against it and despite WINGS promotors' hard work, would not change his mind. Now, Clara has 5 children and after having recently sufferred a miscarriage, finally convinced her husband and came to our clinic to get a Jadelle implant. Clara is very happy and grateful for the help she has received. She says she knows it will be much easier for her to care for her 5 children, without worrying about another unplanned pregnancy.

In March WINGS team was in Chimaltenango to provide a surgical permanent procedure to 9 mothers who decided not to have more children. Our patients were very happy with the service they received and grateful for having an option to decide on whether they wanted to have more children or not. Some mothers are only 25-26 years old and already have 4-5 children - they know that by deciding not to have any more, they will be able to provide for the children they already have, give them education and proper nutrition and take care of their future.
