For every thousand baby turtles that hatch at Mon Repos beach near Bundaberg in Queensland, only one survives to adulthood. Sharks, big fish and circling birds all eat baby turtles, and they die after becoming entangled in fishing nets or eating plastic bags, which they mistake for jellyfish.
When ready for breeding, at around 35 years of age, female loggerhead turtles migrate for hundreds or even thousands of kilometres to lay the eggs on the beach where they were born.
We were lucky enough to see these baby turtles digging their way out of their nest and scuttling down to the sea. Mon Repos Conservation Park is designed to protect the turtles, ensure their ongoing use of the area and provide opportunities for turtle watching.
