Found our way to the old boathouse at the Entrance today. And yep, there were plenty of old boats there! Going to go back after school holidays have finished and hire one for some relaxing floating about the lake. Will be very different to my kayak!

An Everglades Snail Kite emerging from the shallow creek in the everglades with his snack. This endanger species repeats this process about twice an hour. Taken in the Florida Everglades near the Tamiami Trail using the Canon R5, 600mm F4 iii, and 2xiii on a Manfrotto monopod with a Wimberely Monopod head.

A neon-colored, noisy, highly social bird of lowland and mid-altitude subtropical forests. Surprisingly difficult to spot as it glides from tree to tree in the middle and upper levels of the forest. Memorable if seen well: bright green with chestnut-tipped wings, a black mask, and a coral-red bill. Similar Indochinese Green-Magpie is yellower-toned and paler-eyed, and lacks the black-and-white “lattice” of feathers on the rear tip of the wings. Gives a series of piercing shrieks followed by a hollow and decisive-sounding “chup” note. (eBird)

A master of disguise! This was the best view that we had of this lovely green bird. We had previously seen one in India but at a great distance so happy to have a repeat on this trip.

Good to have the Baltimore Orioles return. Something we can look forward to every spring. This male was out enjoying the pleasant weather.
It’s not hard for the snail kite to plan its daily menu. The endangered raptor eats only one food: apple snails, and a lot of them—10,000 a year per bird. Catching the freshwater snails is a laborsome venture that involves waiting until the snail comes to the surface to breathe and—at the exact right moment—swooping down to grab it. Employing its perfectly adapted curved beak, the kite then extracts its escargot and repeats the process 27 more times, every day.
This specialist bird has been hit hard by habitat declines and other changes in the Florida wetlands it calls home. From 2000 to 2007, scientists noticed a steep decline in the number of snail kites, owing in part to two major droughts that left their wetlands parched. The decline was also affected by the rarity of the apple snail, which lives in a very particular habitat and has a relatively short lifespan. Without its snails, the snail kite's chances of survival were looking poor—until an unlikely invader found its way to Florida.
It turns out there is more than one variety of apple snail. The non-native South American apple snail likely made its way to the Sunshine State via the pet trade, possibly when a rash aquarium owner released the species into the wild. The South American snail, which can grow to nearly the size of a tennis ball, quickly outpaced its native cousin, which is only the size of a ping-pong ball. It lays more eggs, lives longer, and can adapt to more diverse habitats than the native variety, and so spread widely all over the Florida wetlands.
You may sense where this story is going. A recent study in Nature Ecology & Evolution found that the snail kite has rapidly evolved so as to be able to forage on this new, larger prey. The bills of the raptor, says Robert Fletcher, coauthor of the study and associate professor in the department of wildlife ecology and conservation at the University of Florida, have increased in size since the invasion of the South American snail.
“Bill size and shape are heritable, meaning that birds with larger bills pass the trait onto their offspring, and larger-billed birds have a higher survival rate,” says Fletcher. Parent kites that are able to handle the larger apple snail bring it back to their young, who are more likely to grow stronger, survive, and breed in turn. The first couple months of life are the most dangerous for young snail kites, who are just learning how to forage on their own and aren’t yet skilled at it. “Bigger-bill snail kites seem to survive much better during this time,” says Fletcher. The result: Numbers of large-bill snail kites have tripled in the past decade.
I found this Female at Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area, Prairie Division, in Osceola County, Florida.
I have no clue what kind of flower this is other than its bud is quite photogenic. This was shot in the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden a few weekends ago. I did not have to do much to this photo, since the bud did most of the work. Anyway, really fun photo that I had fun trying to shoot. Enjoy! :)
Fremont's senecio, Senecio fremontii (yellow), thrives on high elevation scree slopes. Here it is kept company by fireweed, Epilobium angustifolium (orchid). Mount Baldy is in the background.
I first photographed this scene on August 15, 2017 (photo and link in the first comment box), and the scene caught my eye again this summer, three years later. I took the photo, thinking it would be nice to see if the plants had changed size. Indeed, both the senecio and fireweed have grown. The senecio is colonizing crevices downhill, and the fireweed is larger and has invaded the senecio (can be seen when viewed large).
In addition, a mountain hairbell, Campanula rotundifolia, is blooming inside the senecio.

Landmark S4M 10009 pulls forward to load its last hopper with corn at the Sunrise Co-Op facility in South Charleston, OH. Once done, they'll shove the loaded cut of cars towards their yard, and will repeat the process again with another cut of 8 or so empty hoppers.
Back in August of this year I took the same exact shot of 867 heading north here, albeit it was about 70 degrees warmer!!!

. . . The view from the corner of Rice Road and Seeley Road this morning, just north of Kalkaska. The colors are spotty, with some trees bare, and others mostly green yet!
