It turned out that I had a piece of mild steel bar lying around in the basement, and if I did some precision bending I could make it into a suitable keeper for the permanent magnet in my rusted into oblivion Sturmey-Archer dynohub.

So I found a suitable mandrel (a tin can full of wax from my experiment with waxing chains) to wrap the iron bar around, then used a vice to squeeze it small enough to fit inside the field magnet.

The dynohub spins a lot easier now that I've cleaned off a lot of the rusty wasteland that the ends of the poles had became. There's still a lot of wasting on the poles that were on the wet side of the dynohub, but at least they don't foul the field magnets anymore.
