In the 19th century, the Merksplas colonies were sites of projects to offer labour to vagabonds and unemployed people. Over a 1.000 acres of rough land was cultivated and are nowadays accessable for walkers and bikers. The bulidings and farm are nicely renovated and accessible.

Ruins of St. Mary's Church & Cemetery, Dunvegan, Isle of Skye

So off I set to Dunvegan in search of a ruined church and The Duirinish Stone, never been before so took a leisurely stroll around it and shot it from various positions this probably being my favourite. Unfortunately the weather closed in and removed any hope of some light at sunset and removed any view of the background scenery. I didn't see any point of going up to The Duirinish Stone so that's for another time. I do really like these old ruins that are so common in parts of Scotland. They always make me wonder about the story behind how they got to their current state.

St Mary's Church was built in 1694 -- the date is inscribed on a stone over the north door -- to replace an older medieval church that served as the parish church for the Duirinish region of northern Skye.

The original building was a simple rectangle, but a north burial aisle was added in 1839. A 1735 burial enclosure with fine Renaissance carving stands against the west gable.

I took a picture of this house over a year ago and it was in a pretty bad state (see the first comment). When I went by it the other day, I noticed that work was being done. The L-shaped back of the house has been completely removed. This is the same viewpoint as the first picture. They have removed the two windows on the side and boarded over them.

At this point, I’m not sure if they are methodically tearing it all down or fixing it up.

I’ll be keeping my eye on it.

A small impression of the work in this phase of the renovation in the house. Man, what a mess of particulate matter and noise pollution. Fortunately, 1 more day and then the build-up begins.

There was actually a BMW in the driveway (hidden in the shadows).

A nice old Italianate house in southern Elkhart County, Indiana. My guess is that this was built somewhere between 1885 and 1895.

Per quasi un secolo e mezzo il West Pier è stato molo più caratteristico della Gran Bretagna. Rinomato per il suo splendido stile architettonico, fu visitato e apprezzato da milioni di persone. Inaugurato nel 1866 come semplice molo per passeggiare, dai primi del Novecento con l'aggiunta di un teatro e di una sala da concerti, divenne un fiorente centro di intrattenimento sul mare raggiungendo il suo periodo di massimo splendore. Con lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale e in seguito alle sue conseguenze le sorti del West Pier cominciarono a declinare. Come la moda per vacanze all'estero prese piede negli anni '50 e '60, il molo ormai trascurato cadde in rovina. Venne chiuso al pubblico nel 1975 dopo essere stato dichiarato non più sicuro. Ancora in attesa di lavori di ammodernamento due incendi prima e diverse tempeste hanno lasciato davvero poco dell’antico splendore. Ma anche oggi, con i suoi resti dalla bellezza inquietante, il West Pier è ancora l'edificio più fotografato a Brighton.

For almost a century and a half the West Pier has been Britain’s most iconic pier. Renowned for its wonderful architectural style, it has been visited and enjoyed by millions. Opening in 1866 as a simple promenade pier, by the early twentieth century with the addition of a theatre and concert hall, it had become a thriving centre of seaside entertainment and enjoying its glamorous heyday. With the outbreak of the second world war, and the changed circumstances of its aftermath, the fortunes of the West Pier began to decline. As the fashion for foreign holidays took hold in the 50’s and 60’s, the neglected pier fell into disrepair. Declared unsafe it was closed to the public in 1975. It was still awaiting renovation when two fires and several storms, left really little in situ. But even today with its sculptural remains casting an eerie beauty over the seafront, the West Pier is still the most photographed building in Brighton.

Bratislava is a mix of the beautiful and the formerly beautiful. This architectural Grizabella offers a Memory to people at the thriving craft festival in the adjacent square.

For a coupe of days we watched different rosellas check out this hole in a tree at the Tumut Caravan Park. Eventually, this one took up residence and began renovating .... foreshadowing what would face us when we got home in a few days.

This might well be the best house in Swansea. It is kept in superb condition, but wears all the traits of late Georgian styling. From that top balcony would be wonderful views of Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula.

Peter and Paul fortress, St Petersburg

Old building in Clarkefield, Victoria. This old building is in Station Street, Clarkefiled and is a few minutes walk from the famous Coach and Horses Inn. I have tried to find out the story behind this place but so far to no avail. If anyone can enlighten me, it will be very much appreciated.

Abstract/Summary:

Old Clarkefield general store and post office is to be auctioned next month. This century old building has made a number of appearances in the TV series "Blue Heelers" and included in its sale is an adjoining four-bedroom period house. The store has long been closed but in its heyday it joined the Clarkefield Hotel as a meeting place. Unique design, high gabled, rust coloured roof. Used for the feature film "Thunderstone".

Facing the Town Hall is an otherwise nondescript building being renovated, which has these four marble columns with beautifully carved capitals. I'm sure they're Gothic Revival and generally in excellent condition. Pevsner seems not to mention them at all, so I can't credit the sculptor.
