Kärntens schönster Aussichtspunkt...
//

Lake Wörthersee is Carinthia's largest lake. It lies facing west-east between Velden and Carinthia's capital Klagenfurt. For many years, the lake has been a playground for the rich and famous, who have bought up almost all the lake properties there. As a child, I thought it was called that because millions of words had been sunk into it, but I learnt that its name comes from the peninsula that became an island when the water level rose and was therefore called ‘Werde’ in Old High German. It later became Wörth and Lake Wörthersee. I enjoyed the view shown here from the viewing tower on the mountain Pyramidenkogel south of Lake Wörthersee.
Maria Wörth (Slovene: Otok) is a municipality in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in the Austrian state of Carinthia. The centre of the resort town is situated on a peninsula at the southern shore of the Wörthersee. In the east the municipal area borders the Carinthian capital Klagenfurt. The municipality consists of the two Katastralgemeinden Maria Wörth and Reifnitz (Ribnica).A first St. Mary's Church was erected about 875 during the Christianization in former Carantania, led by the Bishops of Freising based at Innichen Abbey. It was first mentioned in an 894 deed as Maria Werd — as the site had then been an island, the Old High German term Wörth or Werder like Slovene Otok denotes a piece of land surrounded by water. The church served for the translation of the relics of Saints Primus and Felician and played an important role within the Christian mission in the Duchy of Carinthia.

About 1150 Bishop Otto of Freising founded a college of canons here and had the small Winterkirche chapel built beside the collegiate church. In 1399 both churches were destroyed by fire and afterwards rebuilt in the present late Gothic style. The Freising Prince-Bishops gradually lost their influence in Carinthia and about 1500 the college finally became an annex of Millstatt Abbey, from 1598 led by Jesuits.
With the Suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773, Millstatt Abbey was dissolved and Maria Wörth passed to the re-established Bendectine St. Paul's Abbey in the Lavanttal in 1809. Not until 1903 the present-day municipality was established on territory of neighbouring Schiefling and Keutschach.
Playing around in photoshop. Just for kicks really. The picture is originally from Volkswagens official showground in Wörtersee this spring and the Scirocco wasn't anywhere near moving :p
Reifnitz ( Slovenian: Ribnica ) is a town on the southern shore of Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia . The main town of the municipality of Maria Wörth has 828 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2023).
Buildings
Reifnitz Castle ( Slovene Grad Ribnica ob Vrbskem jezeru ), also called “Little Miramar ” Castle ( Slovenian Mali Miramar ), was built in 1898 on the headland on the northern edge of Reifnitz Bay. It presents itself as a castell-like, late-historic building on a fortified terrace with a crenellated round tower in the southeast, a stepped gable above the staircase axis on the south facade and a bay window in the northeast. Inside there are, among other things, two coffered ceilings, a ceiling decoration in the Rococo style and in the staircase you can look through remarkable glass windows from the time it was built.
The Reifnitz castle ruins: The first approach to building a fortified complex on the castle rock near St. Margarethen-Reifnitz probably dates back to the early medieval Christianization of the pagan Alpine Slavs and the colonization by Bavarian-Franconian new settlers in the 8th/9th century. Century. In the following centuries, this became one of the most powerful castles around Lake Wörthersee, which dominated the entire southern bank and the Keutschacher Lake Valley. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1145. It was damaged by the earthquake of 1348 . After several changes of ownership, the Keutschachers are documented as caretakers or burgraves of Reifnitz at the end of the 15th century. Today only a few remains of the wall remain and give an idea of the former size and might of this complex. The branch church of St. Margarethen now stands on the site of the former castle chapel
St. Margarethen is a branch church of the parish church of St. Georg in Keutschach and is probably the oldest church founded in the Reifnitz-Keutschach area. Presumably in 977, but undoubtedly with the first mention of Reifnitz Castle in 1189 or 1195. The clients for a conversion in the High Middle Ages to the late Gothic core were the Lords of Keutschach, who most likely received financial support from Salzburg Archbishop Leonhard . A keystone in the vault of the nave, where the Keutschacher coat of arms, the turnip, is attached, indicates this fact. The Romanesque chapel , of which nothing remains, was located at the highest point of the former castle, where the church building is also located. The square on which the late Gothic church stands is bordered on three sides by steep rock faces .
