Tomato 'Black Cherry' 23W30 Tomato S1- (Vicent Sapp, 2003) Cherry Tomato, Mature plant size: 65day, PURPLE, blackish purple, USDA Hardiness Zone Veg, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed S1 for 128 DAYS (Pinetree). Planted in 2023.

Victory Seeds: 65 days, indeterminate — 'Black Cherry' plants are vigorous and very productive. Their bite-sized fruits are cherry shaped but have dark, purplish coloring similar to the famous 'Cherokee Purple' tomato. Pop one in your mouth and you will be rewarded with a wonderfully complex flavor palate that is fruity, balanced, very rich, sweet, and intense. 'Black Cherry' has become a very popular variety and is worthy of your garden space.

'Black Cherry' was originally developed from a "natural occurrence" and introduced in 2003 by the late Vincent Sapp, co-founder and original owner of Tomato Grower's Supply Company. Our original sample was sent to us by David Pendergrass of Middle Tennessee.

Tomato 'Uluru Ochre' 23W27 Tomato G2- (Rosy Family, 2014) Dwarf Tomato, Mature plant size: 65day, ORANGE, black orange, USDA Hardiness Zone Veg, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed G2 for 107 DAYS (Victory). Planted in 2023.

Victory Seeds: 65 days, dwarf — The vigorous, dwarf, rugose, regular leaf plants are relatively compact, quite early to produce and prolific. Producing a good yield of medium to large sized (six to twelve ounces) oblate uniquely colored tomatoes that are essentially the first "black/orange" variety we've seen - orange flesh with green overtones, and somewhat amber/orange/green in appearance. The flavor can be a bit variable season to season, but at its best, it has an absolutely delicious, smokey flavor.

80 day HEIRLOOM Indeterminate The green fruit become amber tinged when fully ripe. Slices are lime green, resembling a sliced kiwi, and the flavor is terrific, spicy and sweet. Fruits are 5 inches by 4 inches and many weigh over a pound.

Victory Seeds: This family heirloom was introduced to the general public by Ruby E. Arnold (1915-1997) of Greeneville, Tennessee. According to the family, they are not sure how, when or why the "German" got added to the name of this variety. They are not from Germany and they have no known German ancestry. They speculate that Ruby's may have selected her tomato from a now unknown variety from seed originally sourced from a German-speaking Amish seedsman in their area named Ivan Snapp.

2023 note: seedlings were not a strong as the other tomatoes that I started. But, in the garden looked really good and was one of the first to produce ripe fruit. Great tasting tomato.

Tomato 'Aker's West Virginia' 23W33 Tomato S1- (Aker, 1990) Red Tomato, Mature plant size: 90day, RED, USDA Hardiness Zone Veg, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed S1 for 146 DAYS (Victory). Planted in 2023.

Victory Seeds: 90 days, indeterminate — The regular leaf vines of 'Aker's West Virginia' remain fairly compact, only reaching four to five feet in height, and with flower clusters a bit closer together that typical indeterminate varieties. They produce ample amounts of red colored, round to oblate shaped, six to twenty ounce fruit that are meaty and quite delicious with an "old fashioned" well balanced flavor. On our farm in Oregon, the plants continued producing beautiful, huge fruit, even after the fall rainy season began. The tomatoes are unusual in that they do not develop green shoulders as immature fruit like other reds.

We received or sample of 'Aker's West Virginia' from Craig LeHoullier. In 1996, Craig was given this variety from Pennsylvania tomato enthusiast, the late Carl Aker. Craig explained that he had met Carl at a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Harvest Festival in 1990, and that throughout the 1990s, he and Carl had corresponded and shared many tomato varieties. One packet of seeds that Craig received from Carl was simply labeled, "West Virginia," so Craig added the "Aker's" designation to distinguish it from other tomatoes with that name.

Tomato 'Rosella Purple' 23W34 Tomato S3- (Sleepy Family, 2011) Dwarf Tomato, Mature plant size: 75day, PURPLE, deep purple-pink, USDA Hardiness Zone Veg, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed S3 for 151 DAYS (Victory). Planted in 2023.

Victory Seeds: 75 days, dwarf — 'Rosella Purple' is similar to 'Cherokee Purple' in color, size, shape and flavor but on a dwarf growing plant. Regular leaf, dark green rugose foliage, stout central stem, grows to three to four feet in height. Perfect for a large container or a small garden space. The fruits are oblate, ranging from six to twelve ounces, and ripen to a deep purple-pink color. Flavor is full, intense, balanced and delicious. 'Rosella Purple' originated from a cross between 'Budai' (a small red fruited dwarf) and 'Stump of the World', made in 2006 by Patrina Nuske Small in Australia. A subsequent selection discovered by Craig LeHoullier led to 'Rosella Purple'. It was grown out to its ninth generation before being released, and is a quite stable open-pollinated variety, but still may produce the occasional off-type plant.

2023 note: produced a little later than my other dwarfs, tasty. Will grow this one again. Was only 4-5 feet tall, some of the other dwarfs got up to 6 feet.

Baker Creek: 80 day Indeterminate. This Brad Gates introduction was selected from a cross between ‘Beauty King’ and a blue tomato. Fruit is modest beefsteak-type slicer, weighing up to 8 ounces, and the flavor is as good as its outstanding antioxidant content! Deep blue-black shoulders make this unique among slicing types. Sunburn and crack resistant.

69 day HEIRLOOM Ukraine. Indeterminate. The deep red fruits appear to be a shiny black while the interior is a reddish green. Surprisingly, this very old, very sweet, fairly large tomato is also very early. Started 4/12/14

Bakers Creek: 80 days. Dark red-purple fruit, rich sweet flavor. One of the best. It always places high in tomato taste trials. It’s very juicy. An heirloom from Russia with very unique looking, large fruit. The wonderful flavor is popular at many markets on the West Coast; also a favorite of many fine chefs. The top tomato in our 2014 nutritional study and voted best tasting.

2023 note: Quick to germinate, strong seedlings.

Tomato 'Uluru Ochre' 24w34 90do Tomato s1 (Rosy Family, 2014) Dwarf Tomato, 65day@ Maturity, OR black orange, Hardy to Zone Veg, Garden s1 (SRC Victory) PLTD 2024.
