Aircraft Handlers Onboard HMS Invincible by Defence Imagery

Aircraft handlers wait on the flight deck for the next aircraft to land.

Having spent two years embarking periodically in HMS Invincible as the High-Readiness Aircraft Carrier, 801 NAS had just returned from 6 weeks training with HMS Illustrious, in order to assist in her preparations for the role.

Embarking for the second and third phases of her Operational Sea Training (OST) package, together with 849 Squadron A Flight Sea King Mk 7s and a Sea King Mk 6 of 771 Squadron, 801's Sea Harrier FA2s tailored their flying to provide progressive training for all of HMS Illustrious' newly formed crew.

Royal Navy Aircraft Handler Feels the Jetwash of Harrier Take Off by Defence Imagery

An Aircraft Handler takes cover, as a Harrier GR7 of IV (AC) Sqn RAF takes off from HMS Invincible, during Exercise Magic Carpet 05.

Exercise Magic Carpet 05 (MC 05) was an Omani hosted and RAF Strike Command sponsored exercise. The exercise was an opportunity for RN, RAF, Omani, French Air Force, USAF and USN squadrons to deploy and practice heavy-weapon bomb drops, utilising the extensive ranges and relatively clear airspace available over Oman. There were a variety of aircraft which took part, including our own Sea Harriers, GR7s and SKASaC, USN F18 and S3 Viking, USAF F16, French Mirage 2000 and RAF Tornado F3, Jaguar, VC10 air to air refuelling and E3D AWACS. In total around 60 aircraft were in theatre, allowing for realistic exercising of a coalition forces.

The participation of HMS Invincible with her Tailored Air Group (TAG) gave an excellent opportunity to prove the Strike Carrier concept within a controlled exercise environment and gain some useful general warfare training. It was be a good opportunity for the ship's company to progress training in an exercise environment.

Sea Harrier FA2s of 801 Squadron fly past HMS Illustrious by Defence Imagery

The Sea Harrier FA2s of 801 Squadron did a fly past of HMS Illustrious after their last ever launch from her decks.

801 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) was the last Fleet Air Arm squadron to operate the Sea Harrier FA2. After a very successful drawdown and decommissioning ceremony, the final Sea Harrier was withdrawn from service on 31 March 2006 at RNAS Yeovilton and the Squadron disbanded.

801 NAS will be recommissioned in October 2006, to operate the Harrier GR7 and GR9 from RAF Cottesmore. 801 NAS will be joining the recently commissioned 800 NAS as well as 1 and IV (AC) Sqns RAF to complete the formation of Joint Force Harrier (JFH).

A Harrier GR9 aircraft is pictured landing onboard HMS Illustrious at sea.

800 Sqn NSW (Naval Strike Wing) based at RAF Cottesmore, embarked onto HMS Illustrious, an Aircraft Carrier, for a 6-week deployment, as part of Exercise Neptune Warrior.

Exercise Neptune Warrior had an extremely large number of multinational participants, ranging from HMAS Anzac (an Australian Frigate), to a Dutch Submarine, and was conducted in the challenging waters of the North-West Scottish coast. Neptune Warrior pitted two large Naval Task Groups against each other in a complex political scenario.

Dummy Bombs Waiting to be Fitted to RN Harrier Aircraft by Defence Imagery

801 Naval Air Squadron completed a 2-week Air Defence Exercise with the Polish Air Force, based at Miroslawiec, in North Western Poland, the sole remaining Sea Harrier Squadron enjoyed fine weather and excellent hospitality throughout "Exercise Polish Dancer 05", whilst achieving some good training with Su22 'Fitter' and Mig 29 'Fulcrum' aircraft.

Hosted by the 8th Tactical Squadron - based at Miroslawiec - 801's pilots conducted a number of useful combined tactical missions, introducing the 'Fitter' pilots to NATO standard procedures and tactics. These missions included dropping practice bombs on the excellent Air-to-Ground ranges in the vicinity of Miroslawiec, which were vast and scattered with redundant Eastern-bloc tanks and aircraft (now utilised as targets!).

The second week allowed integration with the 'Fulcrums' - one of the most capable Soviet built fighters - of 1st Air Tactical Brigade, based near Warsaw, flying in Air Defence missions in Central Poland. The combination of the Sea Harrier Blue Vixen radar and AMRAAM missiles were dominant over the Polish equivalents, though the Mig-29 did excel when engaged in visual 'dogfights'.

"Exercise Polish Dancer 05" continued the progressive integration of the Polish Air Force to NATO procedures and operations achieved by previous UK detachments, and cemented a very strong working relationship between both nations.
