As the attentive follower has already noticed, I have not presented new paintings in a long time, it is due to a far too large production, and that I have received less time over.

I will present new paintings from time to time, but not as often as before.

I will read all your Mail

Finally there is an early spring in the southern part of Finland! First shy spring flowers appear here and there, buds on bushes and trees become huge and ready to pop out very soon, and we get more and more sunny days, but the green moment is not yet here. Probably the roads that spring chooses to arrive in Helsinki area are not in too good condition, like this country side road, and it takes a good while to move ahead on those...

But there is quite a surprise at the end of the road! Is it a Red Riding Hood bringing along a tasty cake for her grandmother? If spring would not rush a bit faster it might miss the chance to find it out, she would be away...

P.S. This is my trial to find out if one can create at some extent visually attractive landscape during the least scenic time of the year, and just before I will start to post bright and colorful spring photos of this spring. :-)

JAGO: *Wraps warm throw around Daisy-Maud* "There you go Daisy-Maud. This will keep us cosy and warm." *Smiles.*

DAISY-MAUD: "Oh that is lovely, Jago!" *Smiles as well.* "Nice and cosy and warm! You're so good to me!"

JAGO: "That is what big brothers are for, Daisy-Maud!" *Slips under the throw and pulls it around him.* "Oh yes! Lovely and toasty warm!"

SCOUT and BOGART: "Hullo Daisy-Maud! Hullo Jago!"

DAISY-MAUD and JAGO: "Hullo Scout and Bogart."

SCOUT: "It's so cold today, and raining and miserable!"

BOGART: "And we can't play outside because it is so soggy and yucky!"

SCOUT: "I'm even so cold that I can feel it through my woollen plush!" *Shivers.*

BOGART: "What are you two doing?"

JAGO: "Well we were feeling cold today too, so I decided it was a good idea to find a nice, warm throw and for Daisy-Maud and I to snuggle up together to keep warm."

DAISY-MAUD: "And we're going to read a faerie tale together. It's a nice way to spend the afternoon."

SCOUT: "Oh that sounds nice and cosy and fun!"

BOGART: "May we please join you, Daisy-Maud and Jago?"

DAISY-MAUD: "Well of course you can, Bogart and Scout."

JAGO: "There is plenty of throw to go around for us all! Come on in!" *Lifts throw so Scout and Bogart can slip under the throw.

*A short while later.*

DAISY-MAUD: *Reading.* "Then the door opened, and an old woman came out leaning upon a crutch..."

SCOUT: "Yes! An ugly old woman with a long nose! I think she looks shifty!"

BOGART: "I do too, Scout!"

DAISY-MAUD: *Reading.* "Hansel and Gretel felt very frightened, and let fall what they had in their hands. The old woman, however, nodded her head, and said, "Ah, my dear children, how come you here? You must come indoors and stay with me, you will be no trouble." She smiled a wily smile and held the door open for them."

SCOUT: "No!" *Gasps. and puts paws to mouth.* "Don't go in Hansel and Gretel!"

BOGART: "She's a witch, Hansel and Gretel!"

SCOUT: "And she likes to eat children... and probably cute little bears too!"

JAGO: "Let's turn the page, Bogart, and see what happens with Hansel and Gretel."

BOGART: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "I forgot that I was the page turner! Alright Jago." *Turns page.*

DAISY-MAUD: *Reading.* "So she took them each by the hand, and led them into her little house."

SCOUT: "Oh!" *Tuts with disappointment.* "Why didn't they listen to us, Bogart? We told them not to go inside!"

BOGART: "Maybe they couldn't hear us, Scout."

SCOUT: "Rats! We should have yelled louder!"

JAGO: *Rubs paw gently over sore ear.* "I don't think the volume was a problem. I think they could hear you Scout and Bogart, all the way on the other side of the world in Bavaria!"

SCOUT: "Then they are just silly children, not to listen to us!"

BOGART: "That's right! We are very wise and trustworthy bears. We know a wicked witch who eats little children when we see one!"

SCOUT: "And eats cute little bears too, Bogart!" *Nods seriously.* "Don't forget that!"

BOGART: "Oh, no I won't forget, Scout."

SCOUT: "They are as bad as Snow White! How many times have I told her not to eat that apple, and yet she still does... every time!"

BOGART: "I guess some people, unlike clever bears, just don't get it and keep making the same mistakes over and over again."

DAISY-MAUD: *Sighs and keeps reading.* "And there they found a good meal laid out, of milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts."

SCOUT: "Oh! Well that explains why they ignored us, Bogart! They obviously had an attack of the grumbly tummies!"

BOGART: "I must confess, if I were offered a feast of milk and pancakes, with sugar, I would..."

SCOUT: "And apples and nuts, Bogart. Don't forget them! A good meal of milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts!" *Nods enthusiastically.*

BOGART: "Oh yes, Scout! Well, if I were offered a feast milk and pancakes, with sugar, and apples, and nuts, I might ignore two very wise bears who know all about wicked witches too."

SCOUT: "There is still hope that once they have drunk the milk and eaten the pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts, they will kick the old witch in the shins and run away."

BOGART: "Or better yet kick her into the hot baking oven and cook her up to a cinder!"

SCOUT: "Oh! Good idea Bogart! I hope you are listening, Hansel and Gretel!"

DAISY-MAUD: *Sighs heavily and turns to Jago.* "I'm glad we didn't have any other plans for the afternoon, Jago."

JAGO: "Indeed Daisy-Maud!" *Nodding sagely.* "With all of Scout and Bogart's interjections, by the time we have finished the story, it will be time for afternoon tea!"

SCOUT: "Oooh! Afternoon tea! Can we have milk and pancakes, with sugar, for afternoon tea, Jago and Daisy-Maud?"

BOGART: "Don't forget the apples, and nuts, Scout!"

SCOUT: "Can we have milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts for afternoon tea, Jago and Daisy-Maud?"

BOGART and SCOUT: "Grumbly tummies Jago! Grumbly tummies Daisy-Maud!" *Rub tummies vigorously.*

The book Daisy-Maud is reading from is my first edition of Hansel and Gretel, with illustrations by Francesca Crespi. It is part of a boxed set of four faerie tales (Hansel and Gretel, Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel) produced as a a "Treasure Box of Fairy Tales", published in Methuen Books in London, in 1983.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her Daddy.

I wonder if Red Riding Hood is inside the house......

I wonder if Red Riding hood will ever find this house

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: "Hullo Monsieur Charles!"

MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Hullo Mon Petite Chaperon Rouge."

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: "What are you doing up here, sitting on Daddy's fence?"

MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Well, I was just relaxing and admiring the view." *Waves paw at surrounding view.* "Come and sit on the fencepost alongside me." *Pats fencepost.*

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: "Oh thank you Monsieur Charles! Oh my!" *Gasps.* "It is very lovely view from up here, Monsieur Charles."

MONSIEUR CHARLES: "You know, I think Monsieur Dumpty had it right. Sitting atop a wall, or fence, can be a pleasurable way to while away an afternoon, Mon Petite Chaperon Rouge."

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: "Oh! So long as we don't fall, like Monsieur Dumpty, Monsieur Charles!" *Reaches out dainty hand and grasps Monsieur Charles' shoulder for security.*

MONSIEUR CHARLES: "Don't worry, Mon Petite Chaperon Rouge," *Pats hand comfortingly with paw.* "I'll make sure that we don't fall." *Smiles toothy grin.*

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" on the 22nd of November is "on top of the fence", a theme that requires a picture of something on top of a fence - objects, plants, animals and even people are allowed for the theme, but the subject has to be on top of the fence, and not in front of, hanging from, or behind the fence! I decided that Le Petite Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood) and Le Loup Charles (Charles the Wolf) were perfect to sit atop my front fence, enjoying the late spring sunshine and my latest flush of roses! I hope you like my choice of this week’s theme and that it makes you smile!

Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petite Chaperon Rouge) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. Little Red Riding Hood is outfitted in a floral patterned cotton dress, trimmed at the hem with sparkly pink tulle. Her beautiful cape, with a lined hood, is made from red fine corduroy and it is fastened with a plum coloured tie. The outfit is complemented by striped jersey leggings, lace socks and charcoal grey velour shoes finished with satin bows . Her face and hands are made of a linen weave cotton and her beautiful long plaits are made of jersey. Little Red Riding Hood’s facial features are delicately done, with embroidered eyes and mouth and hand painted nose, freckles and rosy cheeks.

Charles the Wolf (Le Loup Charles) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. He wears a removable purple coat with a black furry trim and smart fur lined boots. He also has a big mouth and sharp teeth - all the better to eat you with, my dear!

When I was a child, my Grandmother used to read the old faerie tales of Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson out of big (at least they appeared to be so to a small child) old tooled leather and gilded fabric volumes. One book that was a favourite of mine, was a copy of "Fairy Tales Told Again", the English translated version of "Les Contes de Perrault" illustrated with black and white engravings by the French illustrator Gustave Doré, which had belonged to my Great, Great Grandfather: a volume I still possess today, and which as an antiquarian bibliophile I now know to be a first edition of the title from 1882 which had been passed down through the generations of my family. One of the illustrations I loved was that of a cherub like Little Red Riding Hood climbing into bed with the Wolf, who is hiding his true identity beneath a frilly mob cap pulled low over his furry brow. Imagine my surprise when, as an adult, I moved half-way around the world with my collection of antique volumes of faerie tales, only to discover a Romantic style painting of Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf by Gustave Doré from 1862 hanging in the Nineteenth Century European Paintings Gallery in Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria!

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 24th of January is "in the style of..." which requires a photo in the style of your favourite photographer or artist (painter or sculptor), and then to tell my audience whose style I think the picture emulates. I have chosen the more detailed rendition of one of the designs made by the great French illustrator Gustave Doré for the faerie tales of Charles Perrault (1628–1703), which were printed in Paris in 1862 and now hangs in the National Gallery of Victoria. You can find a link to the paining here: www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/3918/ and I will also include a link in the first comment below. In his painting, Gustave Doré has illustrated Perrault’s original Little Red Riding Hood of 1697 – rather than the later, sanitised versions, mainly for British audiences, and depicts the story’s penultimate moment, just before the triumphant, and satiated, wolf bites off Little Red Riding Hood’s head. Terror was often a key component in faerie tales which also had a moralising element or subtext. Romantic artists were drawn to these darker aspects of tales written for children. I have used my little bear Scout as our heroine Little Red Riding Hood, because it is his favourite faerie tale after all, and he recently received his very own Red Riding Hood cape from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, which he wears for the picture. Joining him in the bed is Monsieur Charles, my Moulin Roty wolf from the "Il était une Fois" series of toys. He is wearing an antique lace and satin bedcap from the 1880s from my vintage clothing collection, pulled down low over his furry brow. Just like the paining, Grandmamma's glasses lie on the snowy white counterpane and whilst I don't have a pipe and leather tobacco pouch such as the one depicted in the painting, I do have the next best thing - a sterling silver Georgian snuff box, which I hope will suffice. In the painting, the bed hangings are red, which I have have recreated here. As Gustave Doré painted an oil on canvas, I have given my photograph a painterly effect using a filter from BeFunky, and I have signed the painting in the same spot that Gustave Doré did in the bottom right-hand corner. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, that you feel I have emulated Gustave Doré's style and that it makes you smile!

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. She made some holes on the hood for the ears haha.

As spring turns to summer, one can’t help but long for a good old-fashioned picnic.

The idyllic outdoor repast has been a favorite subject of painters for about as long as it has existed. Gertrude Stein, the famed Parisian art patron and poet, wrote effusively of the art of the picnic in her poem “Every Afternoon. A Dialogue” with the line: “We will picnic. Oh yes. We are very happy. Very happy. And content. And content.” And who wouldn’t be? She likely picnicked with Picasso, Cèzanne, and a few other of her famous artist pals.

SCOUT: “Paddy! Paddy! Oh Paddy come quickly!” *Jumps up and down.*

PADDY: “What is it, Scout? Whatever is wrong?”

SCOUT: *Stops jumping up and down.* “Why nothing, Paddy. Why do you always think something is wrong when I call you?”

PADDY: “Because usually something is wrong, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Oh!” *Puts paw to mouth.* “Well not today, Paddy!”

PADDY: “Then why did you call me, Scout?”

SCOUT: “Because I want to show you the amazing pink leaves I saw through the window on the back lawn this morning. I want to go out into the garden. Will you came with me, Paddy? Will you hold my paw?”

PADDY: “Oh, yes of course, Scout! I’d love to hold you paw and come to see these amazing pink leaves you saw.”

ROSIE: “Pink leaves? Ooooh!" *Clops paws.* "How thrilling! May I come too, Scout?”

EDGAR: “I should certainly like to see the pretty pink leaves Scout described. Wouldn't you, Emmett?”

EMMETT: Oh yes I would!" *Claps paws.* "May I come as well, dear Scout?"

BOGART: “Me too, Scout! May I come as well? Please!” *Excited.*

SCOUT: “Oh yes! Please do! Everybear and anybear can come! Let’s all go look at the pretty pink leaves!”

PADDY, SCOUT, ROSIE, BOGART, EMMETT and EDGAR: *All go into the garden to see the falling pink leaves.*

SCOUT: “Look everybear! Look at all the beautiful pink leaves that have fallen!” *Runs up to the camellia bushes.*

BOGART: “Gosh! Aren’t they pretty!” *Bends down to touch one.*

ROSIE: “I have never seen anything like them before.”

EMMETT: "They are falling from the sky like rain!"

EDGAR: "Or snow!"

PADDY: “Oh Scout, Rosie, Bogart, Edgar and Emmett, these aren’t leaves.”

BOGART: “They aren’t, Paddy?”

PADDY: “No, Bogart.”

SCOUT: “What are they then, Paddy, if they are not leaves?”

EMMETT: "Are they rain?"

EDGAR: "Or snowflakes?"

PADDY: “They are neither Emmett and Edgar. They are petals.” *Points.* “See the pink flowers up there. They are camellias, and now most of the flowers have fallen as autumn progresses here, and these are their petals.”

BOGART: “Well, they are still very beautiful, Paddy, whatever they are!”

EDGAR: “Indeed they are."

EMMETT: "They are soft and beautiful.”

ROSIE: "And, our favourite colour, Scout!"

SCOUT: “They match your woollen plush, Rosie.”

ROSIE: “Gosh! Yes they do! I might gather some and press them in some of Daddy’s books. I’d like to have some pretty pink petals to look at in winter time.”

SCOUT: "Oh yes!" *Claps paws.* "What a great idea, Rosie!"

PADDY: “Well, you can, Scout and Rosie, but they will probably lose their colour, and fade to be a dusky pink instead.”

SCOUT: “Oh that is a shame. I would have liked some for a keepsake.”

DADDY: “Well, I have a nice solution for you!”

PADDY, SCOUT, ROSIE, BOGART, EMMETT and EDGAR: “Oh! Hullo Daddy!”

EDGAR: “What is your solution for the petals losing their colour, Daddy?”

EMMETT: “Are you going to colour them with your special pencils?”

ROSIE: "Or your paints, Daddy?"

SCOUT: "Or your crayons, Daddy?"

DADDY: “Ahem!" *Clears throat.* "Those are pastels, Scout, not crayons. And I’m afraid that these petals are so delicate that they would tear if I tried to colour them with pencils and pastels, and they may fall apart with watercolour paints.”

BOGART: “What about painting them? Paint brushes are nice and soft and snuggly.”

DADDY: “That is true, Bogart, but not soft enough. Anyway, that still isn’t my solution.”

SCOUT: “What is your solution Daddy?” *Excited.* “I want to know!”

DADDY: “Well, if you’ll all pose under the camellias, I’ll take you photo, and that way, you can have a moment of the carpet of pretty pink petals forever!”

PADDY: “Oh Daddy! That’s very clever!” *Claps paws.*

SCOUT: “Oh yes it is, Daddy! Thank you!”

DADDY: “Very well, everybear and fox, say ‘grumbly tummies’.”

PADDY, SCOUT, ROSIE, BOGART, EDGAR and EMMETT: “Grumbly tummies!”

DADDY: “One... two... three!”

*Camera clicks and whirrs.*

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.

Made by Merrythought in England, Emmett is a charming little bear, sweet and smiling, crafted from multi-tonal marl grey mohair and featuring golden velvet paws. He is accessorised with a classic tartan woollen scarf. He is number 23 or a limited worldwide edition of 200.

Handmade at Merrythought in England from warm-gold tousled mohair plush, Edgar is a cheerful companion who has terracotta pure cotton velvet paws, and wears a delightful floral cotton bow tie. He is number 2 of a limited worldwide edition of 200.

Red!!! It's been 321 years... stop sulking. Yes, I ate granny and tricked you. If I didn't dig that Red Riding Hood vibe I would have ate you too.

AURORA: "Oh yes we do, sweet Scoutie! Grumbly tummy Scoutie! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.

SCOUT: "They are like faeries, but they are English, like Daddy."

AURORA: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "Oh and look, Scoutie! It is set up just for two!"

SCOUT: "Yes, for you and me, Aurora!"

AURORA: "Oh that is nice of Daddy. Then I can sit next to you and maybe... maybe we can bump noses!" *Giggles.*

SCOUT: "Well I..." *Blushes pink beneath woollen plush.*

DADDY: "Oh! Hullo Scout and Aurora! I have just boiled the kettle and made you some tea." *Puts teapot down.* "Did you have a good time?"

SCOUT: "Oh hullo Daddy! Yes we did! We had soooo much fun! Wheeeee!"

AURORA: "Hullo Daddy! We rode around on Scoutie's scooter soooo fast! Wheeeee!"

SCOUT: "But now we are hungry and thirsty! All that whizzing around Mummy Marian's garden has given us grumbly tummies!"

AURORA and SCOUT: "Grumbly tummies, Daddy! Grumbly tummies!" *Rub tummies vigorously.*

DADDY: "Well, just as well I just baked these whilst you were out whizzing around." *Puts down tin.*

AURORA: "Oooooohhhh!" *Intrigued.* "What's inside, Daddy?"

DADDY: "Why don't you open it up and find out, Aurora?"

AURORA: *Carefully opens tin.* "Oooooohhhh! Biscuits! Yummy!"

SCOUT: "Oooooohhhh! You special shortbread biscuits, Daddy! Thank you so much!"

AURORA: "Oh yes, thank you Daddy!"

DADDY: "Now, you two, make yourselves comfortable here on the lawn, eat and drink your fill, and then you can ride around on the scooter around our garden."

SCOUT and AURORA: "Oh thank you Daddy!"

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577233464...) and their MummyMarian Kloon (on and off). Aurora (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577235370...) is my bear Nanuk's niece and lives with Mummy Marian after being blown there on a cloud from the North Pole, as both she and Nanuk are Polar Bears. Aurora and Scout have a lot in common and are fast becoming very good friends!

Scout's best friend Peter built a scooter with his own paws as a Birthday present to Scout, who recently turned six. Scout used the magic portal between Mummy Marian's house and our house here in Australia and took his new scooter with him so that he could ask his friend Aurora to go for a ride with him. You can see here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54420350277/in/faves-4... or in the first comment below. After whizzing around very fast for a while, they decided that it was high time they stopped for tea, but back here at our house, so they warned me, and I had just enough time to set out the tea things and boil the kettle before they whizzed through the magic portal on Scout's scooter and arrived to take tea in our garden in the beautiful autumnal sunshine.

This beautiful tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. It features two cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated with pixies enjoying different pastimes. The set is very rare. I acquired it from England, and it is a sister set to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set and a 1920s faerie tale tea set. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt spoons, and the spoon in the sugar bowl is an Eighteenth Century mustard spoon and is sterling silver.

Thank you very much to Marian Kloon (on and off) for the use of her photo of Aurora in my photo montage.

Lonely Wolf Seeks Adventurous Red Riding Hood

Tired of prowling through the woods alone. Seeking one daring, cloak-wearing risk-taker who doesn’t mind a little fur and fangs.

About me:

- Strong, independent, and howls at the moon for fun.

Excellent sense of direction (unless there’s a woodcutter involved).

- Has all my own teeth

- Enjoys long walks through the forest, sneaking into grandmas’ houses, and howling meaningful ballads about life’s mysteries (and maybe an occasional hunger pang).

About you:

- Loves the color red, because I can’t resist a bold fashion statement.

- Enjoys surprise visits to Granny's house—bonus points if you can bake.

- Must appreciate a wolf with layers: I’ve got a wild side but also a soft side (especially around cuddly grandmas).

Let's skip the huffing and puffing, and build something real.

You bring the basket, I’ll bring the charm.

Swipe right on this Big Bad Wolf—promise I’m mostly harmless. ;)

SCOUT: “Paddy! Paddy! Look! It’s a climbing frame! Come on Dolly! Let's be tenacious and climb!” *Climbs up the frame of a chair, holding Dolly.*

PADDY: “Oh, not it isn’t Scout.” *Follows Scout and climbs the chair frame.*

SCOUT: “What is it then, Paddy?”

PADDY: “Have a look, Scout, and see if you can work it out.”

SCOUT: “Hhhmmm…” *Looks.* “Hhhmmm…” *Ponders.* “Hhhmmm… oh! It’s a chair!”

PADDY: “Well done, Scout. It is indeed a chair.”

SCOUT: “Or rather, it was a chair! Paddy, there is something wrong with it!”

PADDY: “Yes, I can see that, Scout. The seat is broken.”

SCOUT: “Ooooh!”

PADDY: “What is it, Scout?”

SCOUT: “Dolly and I know who broke it, Paddy.” *Nods seriously.*

PADDY: “Who, Scout?”

SCOUT: “Well, I should have thought that was obvious, since you read lots of faerie tales, Paddy. The person who broke it is that no-good-home-wrecking-break-and-enter Goldilocks! She must have been here! She broke it! Naughty no-good-home-wrecking-break-and-enter Goldilocks!”

PADDY: “How can you know that, Scout?”

SCOUT: “Ahem!” *Clears throat.* “Dolly and I both ded… dedu... deduc… err... worked out who it was, Paddy!” *Nods seriously.*

PADDY: “Oh, sorry Dolly.”

SCOUT: “Dolly says that it’s alright, Paddy. We forgive you.”

PADDY: “Oh thank you, Scout and Dolly. But Scout, I still don’t understand how you... and Dolly... know that it was Goldilocks who broke the chair.”

SCOUT: “Well, it stands to reason doesn’t it Paddy? Who else do we know of who deliberately breaks chairs? You would never break a chair, would you Paddy?”

PADDY: “No, of course not, Scout!”

SCOUT: “And Dolly and I would never break a chair, would we Paddy?”

PADDY: “Indeed no, Scout!”

SCOUT: “And no other bear would, would they Paddy?”

PADDY: “Certainly not, Scout!”

SCOUT: “And Daddy wouldn’t, would he Paddy?”

PADDY: “Most definitely not, Scout!”

SCOUT: “So, it stands to reason that there is only one culprit left!” *Crinkles up muzzle in disdain.* “It has to have been that no-good-home-wrecking-break-and-enter Goldilocks, Paddy! Just ask the wee Baby Bear, Paddy. That no-good-home-wrecking-break-and-enter Goldilocks broke into the Three Bears’ house, ate all the wee Baby Bear’s porridge, slept in his bed without taking off her shoes, and worst of all, she broke his chair! Naughty no-good-home-wrecking-break-and-enter Goldilocks!” *Nods seriously.*

Saturday night, my partner surprised me with a belated Saint Valentine's gift and took me to the largest sunflower farm in Victoria, in the small town of Dunnstown, just on the outskirts of the provincial city of Ballarat, to photograph the flowers for a twilight session. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, I am in summer, going towards autumn and nearing the final few weeks of summer daylight savings time, so the sun doesn't set until around eight o'clock in the evening. Thus when we arrived at six, the evening was warm and we were faced with a wonderful undulating field of golden yellow sunflowers, basking in the sunshine beneath clear blue skies. It was like a great field of endless sunshine. Of course Paddy and Scout came with us in the hope of an adventure or two!

Laiken Britt’s picturesque sunflower farm was not only the first in the Moorabool Shire, but in Victoria, and remains the state’s largest, attracting thousands of people on weekends to the little town of Dunnstown whilst the flowers are in season. ‘Pick Your Own Sunflowers’ has been running for six years now. I attended for my first visit last year with a couple of dear friends.

PADDY: *Sips tea.* "So, you are settling well here at Daddy's house, Garnet?"

GARNET: "Oh yes thank you, Paddy!" *Sips tea.* "Everybear is so nice here at Daddy's house, and Daddy is so lovely! How could I not be happy here?"

PADDY: "Oh good, Garnet, because we want you to be very happy here with us."

GARNET: "Well I am, Paddy. Thank you!"

SCOUT: *Skips up to Paddy and Garnet clutching Dolly.* "Hullo Paddy! Hullo Garnet!"

PADDY: "Hullo Scout!"

GARNET: "Hullo little Scout!"

SCOUT: "What are you two doing?"

GARNET: "We're just enjoying the garden beneath this parasol and sipping tea, here on the lawn. Daddy has a very pretty garden."

SCOUT: "Oh he does, Garnet! And do you like being here with us and with Daddy, Garnet?"

GARNET: "I was only just saying to Paddy how happy I am here, and how it shall be my forever home."

SCOUT: "Oh that's good!" *Smiles.* "Now Garnet. I need to ask you a very important question."

GARNET: "Yes little Scout."

SCOUT: "A very, VERY important question that is of vital importance!"

GARNET: "Goodness, that does sound important, little Scout!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "What is it that you need to ask me that is so important?"

SCOUT: "And of vital importance, Garnet!" *Nods seriously.*

GARNET: "Oh... oh yes of course, little Scout! What do you wish to ask me that is very, VERY important, and of vital importance?"

SCOUT: "Well, I need to know, do you like Little Red Riding Hood as a faerie tale, Garnet?"

GARNET: "Hhhmmm..." *Ponders for a moment.* "Why yes, I do like Little Red Riding Hood as a faerie tale, little Scout."

PADDY: *Whispering.* "That's a good answer, Garnet."

SCOUT: "Oh! That's good! Phew!" *Wipes forehead with back of paw.* "What a relief!"

GARNET: "And why exactly is that so good, and such a relief, little Scout?"

SCOUT: "Well, you see Garnet, Little Red Riding Hood is my most favouritest faerie tale in the whole wide world, EVER!" *Nods emphatically.*

GARNET: "Is that right, Little Scout?"

SCOUT: "Yes Garnet!" *Nods more and cuddles Dolly tightly.*

GARNET: *Quietly chuckles.* "I would never have guessed that." *Winks at Paddy.*

SCOUT: "Oh yes! It is!"

GARNET: "Would you like me to read you the story of Little Red Riding Hood, little Scout?"

PADDY: *Whispering.* "Also an excellent answer, Garnet."

SCOUT: *Gasps.* "Oh! Oh would you, Garnet? Could you?"

GARNET: "Why yes, little Scout."

SCOUT: *Squeals with delight.* "Oh thank you Garnet! That will be soooo much fun! I shall go and fetch the book right now!" *Skips away happily with Dolly.*

GARNET: *Turns to Paddy.* "Little Scout is a sweet little bear, isn't he?"

PADDY: "Yes he is, dear Garnet! Thank you for making him so happy today."

GARNET: "Oh it's my pleasure, Paddy."

PADDY: "I'll get Daddy to make some fresh tea for us. Reading to Scout can leave you with a parched mouth if you aren't prepared."

This beautiful Willow Pattern nursery tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1920s. It features four cups and saucers as well as a tea pot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated with the Willow Pattern in blue, just like the life-size equivalent. It has two sister sets: a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set that I was given as a gift some years ago by a close friend who knows I collect nursery ware and children’s tea sets and a faerie tale set from the 1930s Shell China Company faerie tale tea set that I have built up from various sellers over time.

The parasol that Garnet and Paddy are sheltering under is a child's parasol from the 1920s. It has a little hand painted wooden sailor as a handle. It was made by S. Fox and Company in England.

Garnet is a beautiful hand made English bear given to me by my mother for my birthday after she was selected out of the collection of a former teddy bear enthusiast. Garnet is made from garnet coloured mohair plush (thus her name), with soft russet coloured suede paws and black glass eyes. The heart locket pendant about her neck is gold, and was given to her by her former Mummy. I do hope that she will be very happy living with me. She is certainly making herself at home here, as she should.

"She did love her freedom. But that did not mean she was not occasionally lonely."
