One of them, no older then ten, was playing with a plastic gun, fancying himself in a Spaghetti Eastern. I snatched the gun away, reasoning cockily that a weapon, albeit a fake one, had no business in the hands of a monk. He stared hard at me, puzzled, baffled, angry but finally disappointed that his mischievous brain couldn't defeat my argument. Sure I let him be a boy again.

TRADITIONAL CHINA: SCIENCE
Throughout most of their history the Chinese developed a rational understanding of nature which was both utilitarian and encyclopedic. Constant observers of the skies, the earth and man, they managed to compile vast bodies of recorded data based on their myriad observations. This extensive written material led to many of the "firsts" listed elsewhere in this Hall. However, China never developed true theoretical science as the modern West understands the term: a comprehensive view of nature based on objective investigation and experiment. A fundamental Chinese premise that all phenomena were the result of supernatural will largely prevented the development of that kind of scientific reasoning. Instead, the Chinese focused on applied, or practical science; rarely did Chinese thinkers speculate beyond traditional philosophies.
CHINESE TECHNOLOGY
Technological development in China was based on the premise that there should be a tool for each kind of task. Generalized tools like the hoe, rake, adze, and axe of farming were, of course, standard in Chinese villages, but artisans, including cooks of town and city developed an enormous repertory of tools. The knives shown here are but a small part of this Museum's collection of such tools gathered in North China early in the 20th century. It would have been unthinkable to use a knife created for one purpose on another task.
Both chopsticks and the crossbow shown above were developed in China at about the same time, ca. 4th century BC.
Jade represents excellence and when it is carved into the semblance of ancient bronze vessels, it is a statement of Confucian values. Such carvings could be found only among people of responsibility.
The rulers, astrological compasses, and scales demonstrate aspects of Chinese measuring capability (note modern American ruler for comparison). The Chinese developed the magnetic compass about A.D. 1000, as they did the game of dominoes.
Through the use of the sundial and of a variety of water clocks the Chinese, as early as 104 B.C., were able to establish a reliable calendar based upon the phases of the moon, the solstices and equinoxes and the movement and relative positions of the constellations. By A.D. 700 they had determined the length of the solar year at 365.2444 days.
Characteristically Chinese, however, was the designation of animal symbols for each month, day, and hour of the year and relating them to the trigrams of the I-Ching, which refer to the measurement of chance. Each animal is regarded as exercising influence on one's birth and subsequent existence. Both the diagram above and the white jade imperial birthday gift here depict this "Calendar of the Beasts. Note the yin-yang dualist symbols at center.
The I-Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient classic which measures change (see Taoist case) by the relationship of the eight trigrams shown above. The system makes use of special coins, each having a continuous line on one face and a broken line on the other. Three coins are tossed six times to build up a combination of lines called a hexagram. This combination is then studied in relation to a given case or situation and the Taoist "position" of the individual at the time determined. This gives him the opportunity to decide the next step.
Objective understanding of this system has indicated that in many ways it is more meaningful than Western man's statistical "Laws of Chance". It is a major Chinese contribution to thought.
Animals in Man's Affairs
goldfish- Harmony and regeneration.
sturgeon-Literary excellence, good for passing examinations.
horse-Speed and perseverance; "one who eats horse's heart mixed with wine cures forgetfulness."
monkey-Monkeys chase away goblins and witches. Goblins
and witches cause illness.
dog-Dogs were much eaten for food in China, and this animal symbolically suggests prosperity; it also represents fidelity.
elephant--Elephant-hide poultices were used on bad wounds; tusk shavings make a good tonic. The elephant represents energy, and strength.
turtle- Jelly made from turtle shell helps cure diseases of the kidneys.
dragon—There are many varieties of dragons, all of them benign. Fossil bones were regarded as "dragon bones"; grind them up, mix with wine, and they are aphrodisiac.
tiger-"All parts of a tiger are good for all kinds of diseases."
cicada-Emblem of immortality and resurrection; a cure-all.
ox-"Any cattle product gives strength to the weak."
lion-Sacred to Buddhism, the lion represents courage and in that courage, wisdom.
pig-As pig the animal represents poverty; as boar he is wealth; as meat he is very popular!
dragonfly-A symbol of weakness, also represents the good warmth of summer; dragonflies presage storms.
ram-Emblem of a retired life; the totemic animal of the city of Canton.
toad—Toad juice is excellent for heart conditions; a three-legged toad symbolizes money-making.
jade disc--Represents heaven, "pi," the male aspect of the cosmos, symbolic of vigor.
crab--Crabs are excellent eating and symbolize the health of one who enjoys the fruits of nature.
ivory female figure--Since Chinese custom forbade a woman of the upper class to undress in the doctor's presence, or to allow him to examine her body, a sick lady of the household would use such a model to point out to the doctor the location of her malady.
Animals of all kinds were used in Chinese medicine either as part of the pharmacopeia or as amulets. Most were in any case considered as having an influence on the individual (see Calendar of the Twelve Beasts and label on right wall of this case).
CHINESE MEDICINE
Traditional Chinese medicine is founded on two basic ideas. First, the healthy person has all his body functions in balance; illness means that they are out of balance. This idea is directly related to the Chinese perception of yin-yang (see Taoist case) by which male and female elements in nature complement one another. The anatomy of the human body is a complex map of yin-yang attributes. Thus yin includes the viscera (ts'ang), lungs, heart and kidneys, while yang includes the lower organs (fu), the stomach and intestines. Organ and body behavior can thus be extended into equivalencies in nature: sun, moon, grass, wind, etc. and, by analogy, organic behavior specified or influenced. This is a major factor in diagnosis.
The second basic idea is that organic behavior, including pathology, can be understood by objective and intensive observation. The Chinese were keen observers of the human body, including the action of the pulse and the effect of herbs and other substances. They thus understood and described the symptoms characteristic of diseases and injury and could prescribe treatment and medicine. It is said that the Chinese apothecary could draw upon some 1,800 substances for medical purposes. (See label on right wall.)
