So I'm waiting for the bus to take me from Kantharodai back to Jaffna. I'm a little uptight because check out time at the awful hotel I'm staying in is noon and I'm fairly sure that if I miss that deadline by five minutes the officious Addams-family people who run the hotel will charge me for an extra night. The road I'm waiting on is a one lane road, woven fences on either side. There are like five ladies with saris waiting for the bus. I know it will be crowded and I'm hoping it won't be too awkward....on my bus ride from Trincomalee to Jaffna no one had willingly sat down next to me...especially ladies. But I know I didn't look that dirty or smell that bad and of course I was dressed conservatively. Anyway I see this sign across the road and take a picture of it and say to the ladies "my wife is a midwife" (actually Janet worked in OB/GYN for a number of years, not as a midwife). So I'm expecting some response.....a smile? Nutthin.
So the minibus comes. Oh man is it packed. Of course the ladies have to get on before me. Finally the ticket man shoves me whole-body onto the bus and of course I come onto the vehicle with a lot of heft and smush the sari lady in front of me and on and on....laughter and hilarity were the coin of the realm from that moment on and I made a lot of friends on that short ride back to Jaffna!
