To get this shot, I had to stand in the middle of the highway with my camera on a tripod while dodging traffic!

Bueno...despues de las criticas sobre el marco he decidido mejorar a mi gusto la toma, que os parece ohora?

Stairs photographed by Château Du Loup. This was a exclusive legal visit. Normally this Castle is closed and you can't get in! So don't ask me for a entrance or a phone number I don't have it. Sorry for that.

This photo proudly passed the strict screening of the Realistic HDR Pool :-)

I have managed to add some of my previous photos into that pool. I would like to share my technique here, hoping it would help others:

0. Use a GOOD tripod.

1. Always check your histogram. Try to achieve a good one with your EV-0 shot. A good histogram is a bell-like curve that is positioned along the middle. A good histogram generally means a good exposure. You may or may not need HDR if you get a good wide curve, so if you can do it with a single exposure then do so. Perfect single exposure still beats HDR any time.

2. Achieving #1 is very difficult so you bracket. I choose +1,-1 or +2,-2 depending on how much the curve is swayed to the right or left. Use +2,-2 when there is too much shadows or highlights. This photo used -2,0,+2 because I metered on the water which caused the sky to blow up really bad. With -1,+1 I would not get the magenta sky.

3. Use whatever HDR software that is comfortable to you. I have tried Photomatix and EasyHDR and they work almost the same. When tonemapping, aim for a good dynamic range / contrast ... this is the curve that you wanted in #1. Set the saturation to something neutral. Don't be tempted to oversaturate because it really looks yucky and unrealistic. I am still a victim to this so do as I say and not as I (some times) do.

4. The output of your HDR software is not acceptable 99% of the time. Post process using your favorite image tool. I use Photoshop CS3 which I got for $100 from a close friend :-) I use curves adjustments to fix the midtones and improve contrast. I also use color balance depending on my mood...warmer tones when I want the photo to be "happier".

5. Use a noise reduction software because HDR is really noisy especially if you push too much on luminosity. Balance this with some sharpening otherwise you will lose details.

I hope this helps.

The HDRI tecnique can deliver consistent results even with flowing water and moving clouds. Furthermore the use of a wide-angle lens has helped to minimize the typical undesired ghosting effects, which typically appear when the three exposures are not exactly identical.
