Pietsie patsie pantsie! Wij zijn op vakantie!
English: Let’s have a snapshot from Norway. The Flåm Railway says it‘s one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. I beg to differ. It’s a busy and pretty touristic experience. Halfway there‘s this photostop at the large Kjosfossen waterfall: what follows is a 30 second tsunami of tourists pushing themselves out of the train to take their hasty snapshots. In the meantime a mysteriously intended music tune comes out of the speakers. Above all that, a lady in red appears on top of the cliffs to perform a short, Kate Bush-intended dance. All done within 5 minutes. A pretty sad scene actually. Or ’a shameful ceremony‘ as Kay Adams would say in The Godfather. Norway doesn’t strike me as a country to be experienced in such a superficial manner and it deserves better.
Anyway, here’s some facts and figures: it took 20 years to build this railway, it’s 20 kilometers long, has 20 tunnels and spans a height of 864 metres, making it one of the steepest standard gauge railways in the world. Some views during the trip are truly dazzling but there are also a lot of tunnels (the earlier mentioned 20 of them) which only allow me to look at my own grumpy and cynical reflection when passing through them… But hey, why so serious? Hooray! Hooray! It‘s a holi-holiday!
@Brian: I told you my next train photo would be from somewhere in Scandinavia. This is it.
Raveleijn
Quick snapshot at work, I didn't have to work but did have to uhm arrange stuff! It's going to be a hectic week I guess... expect a lot of boring shots from work ;D
I picked this one because it reminds me a bit of my own work: www.flickr.com/photos/moresque/3948391509/in/set-72157622...
And it even has feathers in it, I looooove feathers! Too bad it's 50 euro ;)
I feel bad for posting an easy picture on the second day already but... been very busy today!
Prinses op de Erwt 27/10/2025 15h54
Best time of the year to capture the most recently arrived fairytale in De Efteling is Autumn. So I waited till this time of year to capture the final result of this one. With in the background the Grand Efteling Hotel which opened in 2025 as well.
De Prinses op de Erwt
In 2023, there was already talk that a 31st addition would be made to the Fairytale Forest. In June of this year, the first design sketches were revealed by Efteling and the location was already known; in the woods between the Grand Hotel and Trollenkoning and Vrouw Holle. Designed by Sander de Bruijn. It will be a narrow building with a bell gable and a large chimney. The walls are decorated with typical Efteling stucco. There are spherical lamps and there are pirons on the roof. Visitors will soon be able to peer inside through the windows. There they will see the princess from the story lying on her mattresses.
De Bruijn, who is also the manager of the Efteling design department, describes the addition as a "royal gazebo". The new Efteling Grand Hotel is located right behind the fairytale. It was not without reason that they chose a story about sleeping: for marketing purposes, The Princess on the Pea is linked to the opening of the hotel.
"With the same style elements and design language, that connection is immediately made and the link with overnight stays becomes extra appropriate," says the designer. "The imposing hotel forms a perfect background for the gazebo, which is actually a royal annex of the Efteling Grand Hotel."
De Bruijn says he was inspired by an old sketch by Anton Pieck. "His working method and perfection are still the starting point for new designs in the world of Efteling. To highlight something small in the foreground, Anton Pieck often placed a grand decor behind it. We also apply that principle here."
De Bruijn is not a newcomer to the Fairytale Forest. He was previously responsible for De Zes Zwanen, opened in 2019. He also kept an eye on recent renovation projects, including Doornroosje. In the area of attractions, we know him from Raveleijn, Baron 1898, Symbolica, Sirocco and Archipel. The Grand Hotel also came into being on his drawing board.

Efteling Grand Hotel 05/04/2023 10h10
A construction update of the largest and most stately hotel De Efteling has ever had. Seen from the side of the Pardoes Promenade. The groundwork seems to be completed and construction could go vertical at any time.
Efteling Grand Hotel
It will be the largest hotel in the history of the theme park. The intention is that from 2024 visitors can stay overnight near the main entrance, on the current Dwarrelplein. The 50 million euro project was confirmed in January 2022.
The complex should feel "grand and inviting", according to Efteling. An "impressive building" of seven floors, with a 106 meter wide facade, is being built. One of the eye-catchers will be a gigantic clock with a pendulum, under a green oxidized copper roof with seven towers.
There will also be a striking glass conservatory with a classic design, spread over two floors. The green square between the main entrance and the Grand Hotel is intended to provide "a pleasant place to stay for hotel guests and park visitors". Visitors will soon enter the park via a 9 meter high and 16 meter wide arcade arch. "An impressive entry", reports the Efteling.
Sander de Bruijn, known for attractions such as Raveleijn, Baron 1898, De Zes Zwanen and Sirocco, has been appointed as chief designer. He was inspired by "elements from the history of the park and by Scandinavian port cities". "In terms of design, this hotel fits in with other characteristic buildings in the Efteling, but gets its own character due to its form and function," says De Bruijn.

Raveleijn park show.
Watch the legend of Raveleijn come to life in this spectacular park show featuring stunt horse riders, a disapearing Princess and a fire breathing dragon.
Location: Efteling Theme Park.
Country: Netherlands.

Okay, let me explain this picture. I had no time to take a picture, so I took this one during the kick-off at work tonight. We got to see the newest show, Raveleijn, and I think this was sort of the climax of the show? So yeah, might be a bit of a spoiler, or not, because I thought the story was.. well... quiet unclear :P Anyway, I liked this shot, and due to a bit of Photoshop it looks really tiny. But those 'dolls' are actually REAL people haha! So that thing was biiiig.
Anyway, the show will be open for 'regular people' (that sounds wrong) in 2 days, so I'm not sure if I can upload this already, so I hope I won't get in trouble ;) I was surprised actually that we were allowed to take pictures!

Raveleijn 27/10/2025 15h06
The Raveleijn Park Show will open in the fall of 2025. This will be the year the park show, which began in 2011, will be seen for the last time. The well-known park show will be completely revamped with a new storyline and impressive show effects, featuring the current main characters. Additional elements will also be added to the recognizable decor in the open-air arena. We will also expand the catering area and add a souvenir shop. The renovated theme area is expected to open in late 2026.
Raveleijn
Ravelin (or "Raveleijn" in Dutch) is a theatre at the Efteling amusement park in the southern Netherlands. It was designed by Sander de Bruijn at a total cost of 30 million Euros and opened its doors on April 8, 2011.
Raveleijn is a multifunctional complex with, amongst others, a theatre, conference hall, restaurant and offices. The main part of Raveleijn is the arena where 5 shows (30 minutes) are performed per day. The open-air arena has a capacity of 1,200 visitors on a total of 1450 m2. The cast has 10 members and the music was composed by René Merkelbach and Het Brabants Orkest with vocals by Anneke van Giersbergen and others. The pen for the animals (5 horses, 1 owl, 1 falcon and 5 ravens) is located next to the parking area. Another main show element is a five-headed, mechanical dragon named draconicon.
The story was written by Paul van Loon and tells the tale of the Woudenberg family of seven who move to the edge of a forest. The children discover an old city gate in the forest, where a tyrant oppresses the people. As it turns out, the five kids have the special gifts needed to fight the tyrant. This story has also been made into a Book, as well as a 12-part miniseries, where more of the plot is revealed.
The show got an update from 30 April 2013 and after, still using the original tale, but with a new decor and some script changes. This new show is produced in partnership with the French theme park Puy du Fou which is renowned for its large open air park shows.
The show starts with the father of the Woudenberg family, walking among the visitor seats saying he has lost his children. After that the main show starts, four of the Children (Thomas, Maurits, Emma and Lisa) walk up to the gate of Ravelin, read the text on the gate, and walk through it. They emerge again, now older, on horses and in armour. They meet up with their younger brother Joost, who says he had discovered the gate before them.
Countess Halina warns them that a falcon is coming, announcing the arrival of the evil count Olaf Grafhart. The count emerges from the water and asks what they are doing in his city. Thomas, the oldest brother, says they are here to free the people of Ravelin of his rule. The count calls his guards, and when Halina stands up for the siblings, he makes her disappear. A fight ensues.
When the siblings emerge victorious, count Olaf calls on his Draconicon, which emerges from the foliage. Thomas calls on his brothers and sisters to make use of their elemental powers, which they got from their weapons. After Draconicon is defeated, the siblings surround count Olaf and Countess Halina is returned. The count is driven back into the water by Halina, and disappears. The siblings go back through the gate, and emerge again in their normal clothes. Here they are also reunited with their dad, and the show ends.

Efteling and the Corona Crisis
On March 11, 2020, the corona virus (COVID-19) was officially classified as a pandemic, a global epidemic. This led to the closure of Efteling from Saturday, March 14 to Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
Efteling appealed for government support through the Emergency Fund Bridging Employment scheme for 3,300 employees who are now at home, but who continue to be paid.
Based on a reservation system, the park was reopened with limited capacity from 20 May. The days before had already been tested with employees, residents of the reopened Bosrijk and subscription holders. The Efteling Hotel and holiday park Efteling Loonsche Land also opened again on that date.
The park has been modified in many ways; for example, plexiglass splash guards have been placed, the capacity of attractions is severely limited and shows such as Raveleijn are not running. In the Fairytale Forest a one-way route is indicated with signs and arrows on the pavement. [ Wikipedia ]

Efteling visitors must show a covid heatlh pass from Friday 12 November at 4D cinema Fabula, horse show Raveleijn, the Efteling Museum and outdoor terraces at catering locations. From Monday 15 November - the start of the Winter Efteling - adigital covid certificate is also mandatory on the Warme Winter Weide. The municipality of Loon op Zand has decided this in response to statements by health minister Hugo de Jonge. Two days later, Efteling made the covid pass compulsory for the entire park. So only one check is needed, at the entrance. Inside the park there were no more rules in therms of facemasks. Physical distancing is still advised. The covid pandemic is not over yet.

The Ton van de Venplein used to be great location during the Winter Efteling with a fire place. During the Summer Nights there was special entertainment. Ton van de Venplein
The Ton van de Venplein is a square adjacent to the Sint Nicolaasplaets, where Droomvlucht, Raveleijn and Villa Volta can be found.
It was laid out in 1992 as the square for the new Droomvlucht attraction. At the time, it consisted of a large round square, tiled with clinker bricks, with two flower beds in the inner ring and a straight path towards the entrance of the new dark ride. Lampposts with spherical lamps and some wooden benches could be found here. In 1996, with the opening of Villa Volta, the garden for this attraction was brought into contact with the square.
On January 31, 2003, the square got its name. As a tribute to the creative director Ton van de Ven, who then took early retirement, this square, where two of his greatest creations can be found, was named after him. A wooden post with a small sign with the name was placed in the flower field on the north side of the path.
In 2011, the entire square was redesigned. There was a small rotunda, tiled in a cobbled pattern, in which a graceful shape can be discovered.

Due to COVID-19 one of the measures is that it is not possible to deviate from the walking route in the Fairytale Forest. This is the only place other than the official entrance and exit where you can leave the forest or enter from the Pardoes Promenade.
The way these routes are marked is not always fairytale-like and rather rough. Fences and banners. Anton Pieck would never have been happy with this.

Flames and roar by the multi headed Draconicon Dragon. The visitors cheer when after some herioc fighting with huge flames and intense roar the multi headed dragon becomes silent. It also marks the end of a spectecular show and performance with horses and birds of prey. Kids are very impressed, they could even feel the heat of the flames.

PandaDroom 13/09/2019 12h02
The space of the post show of PandaDroom flows into the Panda souvenir shop and the Octopus restaurant. Octopus is a self-service restaurant in the PandaDroom complex. The restaurant can be reached via the Pardoes Promenade and via the education room after the attraction.
In May 2019, Efteling announced that the attraction and this restaurant will be completely renovated at the end of this year.
Octopus is lavishly decorated in an underwater theme; perhaps it is the most fully themed restaurant after Het Wapen van Raveleijn. The theme is expressed in, among other things, many jellyfish lamps, a ceiling where the sea level with the keels of boats can be seen and a giant octopus as a piece of resistance.

PandaDroom
PandaVision (Dutch: PandaDroom, translation: PandaDream) is a 4-D film show in themepark Efteling based on the interests of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It was inaugurated on 19 June 2002 by Prince Bernhard.
In a large waiting hall, a 15-minute movie about the WWF is projected on screens.
With the 3D spectacles provided, a maximum of 400 visitors enter the main theater. During the next 12 minutes, the movie Dream of the Panda takes the visitor to the North Pole, ocean and jungle which are, according to the movie, all in the gravest of dangers and only the power of the WWF can save them now.
The movie was made by Movetrix NWave Pictures and has special simulation effects like moving seats, splashing water, blowing wind and a 1000 kg tree branch (made by the Stakebrand company) that falls into the audience.
After movie the guests can have a look at some more WWF material, and children can play in a WWF playground while their parents can sign up for the WWF.

Ton van de Venplein 29/08/2022 13h48
The Ton van de Venplein used to be great location during the Winter Efteling with a fire place. During the Summer Nights there was special entertainment. In the Summer of 2022 a large green elf swing was placed where both guests could sit downstairs but at certain times of the day an elf could be found in the highest swing, waving to everyone below.

The show arena of Raveleijn. As we are in the middle of the town Raveleijn to to witness the story.

The Speelweide, previously also called Picnic Meadow, is a lawn located on the south side of the Dubbel Laan, on the other sides enclosed by Monsieur Cannibale, the railway and the first aid post. It is the largest piece of open lawn in Efteling and is therefore often used for large events.
In the Summer of 2020 this location is used as a temporary place for mobile toilets. Because the capacity per toilet group is small for hygiene reasons, more toilets are needed. Even at half the maximum number of daily guests.

Efteling Grand Hotel 14/05/2022 17h25
The construction of the Efteling Grand Hotel will start after the Summer of 2022.
Preparatory work is in full swing and a large part of the car park has become construction site.
It will be the largest hotel in the history of the theme park. The intention is that from 2024 visitors can stay overnight near the main entrance, on the current Dwarrelplein. The 50 million euro project was confirmed in January.
