Here I'm preparing to fit the joysticks, having measured and marked holes for the mounting bolts. The joysticks are held in with M5 countersunk bolts glued to the control panel with epoxy resin. This allows the vinyl to cover the mounting holes. Big washers on the back of the panel help spread the load of a hard gaming session.
I got a Raspberry Pi. It's been powered by my laptop and it seems to be working fine. I have ethernet and a wireless USB adaptor for keyboard and mouse. Looking forward to adding an SD CARD with the XMBC image to use as media center.
Update: I'm currently using RASPBMC (www.raspbmc.com) and it works almost flawlessly.
