This is the old, traditional fishing stage in Raleigh, Newfoundland. 'Fishing stage' is a particularly Newfoundland term for these platforms. During the heyday of the cod fishery, this would be the place where the boats would come in and unload their catch. The sheds are equipped with working tables for processing, salting and drying the fish. Since the Cod Moratorium (when the government of Canada closed the cod fishery in Newfoundland to protect it from overfishing in 1992) these old wooden stages have been disappearing fast. I made it a point to try and photograph all of them that I could find, and I'll post some of my favourites over the next few days.

I've written a blog post about my Newfoundland trip if you'd like to read it.

If you’d like to see all the Newfoundland images together, I’ve updated my website and you can see them all on the Galleries page.

Sometimes you just have to look outside your own window....

The Raleigh Hotel was a major presence at 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW in downtown Washington, D.C. from 1894 to 1964. This postcard photo is from the late 1950s. Read the history of the hotel at streetsofwashington.blogspot.com/2010/03/magnificent-rale...

Since Katie & I have moved here (Aug 2007), this angle of the city has always appealed to me... so... finally went out and got it. It's been almost one year to the day that I moved to Raleigh, NC and I've got to say that it is still growing on me - but I appreciate it more and more everyday.

This is definitely one of my more favorite shots of the Raleigh skyline.

Raleigh is a fishing village in Ha Ha Bay, on the northern tip of Newfoundland. For many years the community was also known as Ha Ha Bay (or Ha Ha). It is speculated that the name is from the archaic French haha (a type of boundary or fence that could not be seen until closely approached).

Sir Walter Raleigh was an English explorer, soldier, and writer who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was a courtier to Queen Elizabeth I and is best known for his voyages to the New World, where he attempted to establish England's first permanent settlement in America.

Raleigh is considered a great explorer due to his expeditions to the New World, where he explored areas of modern-day Virginia and the Carolinas. He also searched for a route to Asia through the Arctic and led expeditions to Guiana (modern-day Guyana) in search of gold.

In 1584, Raleigh received a charter from Queen Elizabeth I to establish a colony in America, which led to the founding of Roanoke Island. The first settlement, known as the "Lost Colony," disappeared without a trace and remains one of the greatest mysteries in American history.

The capital city of North Carolina, Raleigh, is named after Sir Walter Raleigh, as a tribute to his contribution to the exploration and settlement of the New World.

I bet those kids on the Raleigh Choppers never thought that one day they would be selling for up to £4000...with the occasional one going for even more.

I suspect that when this photo was taken, you could probably buy certain types of houses round this neck of the woods for that much. Thats inflation for ya...

RALEIGH FACTS: Raleigh was founded in 1792 as North Carolina's capital city. It was named for Sir Walter Raleigh, who attempted to establish the first English colony on the shores of the new world in the 1580s.

This man was complimenting her on the bike, and as a matter of fact, the bycicle is the fastest and most practical way of getting around the city of Geneva. Try to stay safe, though ...
