This shrine was empty and dark (while the Kamakhya shrine was packed and stifling, with long lines to get in) and the room with this pool was quite deep, a cave-like sanctum sanctorum accessed by a long, narrow flight of moist, stone steps that descend steeply beside a stone wall. It was very atmospheric and dungeon-esque. The photo's askew, it should be horizontal, but I like it better this way.
- Revision: I've just learned in May, '26, @ 15 yr.s after my visit, that this is NOT the Kameswar mandir (see below), a shrine to Kamdev, the god of lust (which is right next to it), but rather the Ma Chhinamasta mandir "dedicated to the goddess Chhinnamasta, an embodiment of the fierce aspect of the goddess Shakti (an easy mistake to make with the lack of signage). While the Chhinnamasta Temple in Rajrappa is better known, this in Guwahati is also revered by devotees. The temple holds significance for followers of Tantric practices and is a centre of devotion for the goddess in her self-decapitated form. Chhinnamasta represents the balance between life and death, destruction and creation, which is symbolized by her decapitation and the life-sustaining blood that flows from her neck to feed others. [!]" www.instagram.com/p/DAi14VAy-b5/ Hinduism just gets trippier and trippier the more you learn about it. youtube.com/shorts/5qLAQbsSH0w?si=ICgOHGZW7A1NgJps youtube.com/shorts/vlKT4wj9-C8?si=fiv3pyFZfzYuHi1k

- Chhinnamasta "is one of the Mahavidyas, 10 goddesses from the esoteric tradition of Tantra, and a ferocious aspect of Mahadevi, the Hindu Mother goddess. [She is the 6th of the 10.] The self-decapitated nude goddess, typically standing or seated on a divine copulating couple, holds her own severed head in one hand and a scimitar in another. Three jets of blood spurt out of her bleeding neck and are drunk by her severed head and two attendants.
- "Chhinnamasta is a goddess of contradictions. She symbolises both aspects of Devi as a life-giver and a life-taker. She is considered both a symbol of sexual self-control and an embodiment of sexual energy, depending upon interpretation. She represents death, temporality, and destruction as well as life, immortality, and recreation. The goddess conveys spiritual self-realization and the awakening of the kundalini - spiritual energy. The legends of Chhinnamasta emphasise her self-sacrifice - sometimes coupled with a maternal element - sexual dominance, and self-destructive fury.
- "Chhinnamasta is worshipped in the Kalikula sect of Shaktism, the Goddess-centric tradition of Hinduism. Though Chhinnamasta enjoys patronage as one of the Mahavidyas, temples devoted to her (found primarily in Nepal and eastern India) and her public worship are rare. However, she is a significant Tantric deity, well known and worshipped among esoteric Tantric practitioners. Chhinnamasta is closely related to Chinnamunda - the severed-headed form of the Tibetan Buddhist goddess Vajrayogini." sannidhi.net/sannidhi/maa-chinnamasta-temple-kamakhya-guw...
- "Devotees and sadhus frequently visit this ancient shrine to perform intense rituals and to seek special blessings or "Siddhi" (spiritual powers). Goddess Chhinnamasta is often referred to as Maa Chintpurni. Worshipping her is believed to grant victory over enemies and to offer relief from physical ailments, worries, and black magic." (Google A.I.) Again, it was atmospheric and a bit spooky, like the set of a deep, dark crypt in a Roger Corman film from the 60s. I wish I'd known that countless "intense rituals" had been performed down within it over the centuries to vanquish the supplicants' enemies, and to dispel or to wield black magic, etc. I don't think I prayed for anything here myself, and just said "Whoa".
- Chhinnamasta is discussed by an "advanced Yogini" in this video re "the scariest Hindu goddess". (Hindu goddesses are trippier than the gods.): youtu.be/FiUQln-u-LE?si=cz5HI0td4zDn5Gko

I wrote the following @ 15 years ago, which pertains to the smaller Kamdesheva mandir, the shrine next to this one.:
"The demon Tarakasur, the unconquerable, ... began to tread the sacred land like a colossus, causing destruction everywhere. Dismayed at this, the deities tried to arouse [Shiva from meditation] and to make Him worldly-minded. ... [He] could not be roused." After much effort Kamdev and his wife Rati were able to rouse Shiva "but the light that emanated from His brow [his 3rd eye] turned [Kamdev] to ashes. ... At the [behest of his wife] Rati, by the grace of [Shiva], out of the ashes of Kamdev, came Kamdev himself but, Alas! His former beauty and grandeur were gone. Bereft of [his] former beauty both [he and Sati] prayed long to [Shiva] to restore to Kamdev his original beauty. ... At long last Kamdev got back his former status after performing the sacred duty of unearthing the sacred spot [revealing the fallen yoni], one of the 51 [sacred spots] to be found all over India. He erected a magnificent temple over the spot with the help of the Divine builder Biswakarma, the God of Vulcan. As Kamdev recovered his beauty there, the place came to be known as Kamrup Kamakhya." (From "The holy shrine of Kamakhya", local booklet). According to local legends and religious texts like the Kalika Purana, this deep shrine is the spot where Kamdev regained his physical form after his incineration by Shiva's third eye.
- The rousing of Shiva and the ensuing incineration were caught on video.: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8fItwReJNE&feature=related
- Another version of events from the net: "As Shiva continued to do penance [after his rampage following the death of Sati], the other gods became afraid that he would thereby acquire universal power. They sent Kamdeva [Kamdev], the god of love, to make Shiva fall in love again and thereby break his penance. Kamdeva succeeded in his mission, but Shiva was so enraged at the result that he burnt Kamdeva into ashes by a fiery glance of his third eye. Kamdeva eventually regained his life and his original 'form' (Rupa) in Assam and the land where this took place became known as "Kamrup" ("Kamarupa")." kamrup.nic.in/histfr.htm
