Wieża Hassana – to górujący nad Rabatem minaret.

Chellah or Sala Colonia (Arabic: شالة‎), is a medieval fortified necropolis located south of Rabat, Morocco.

The site was abandoned in 1154 AD in favour of nearby Salé. The Almohad dynasty used the ghost town as a necropolis. In the mid-14th century, a Merinid sultan, Abu l-Hasan, built monuments and the main gate, dated to 1339. These later Merinid additions included a mosque, a zawiya, and royal tombs, including that of Abu l-Hasan.

Many structures in Chellah/Sala Colonia were damaged by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The site has been converted to a garden and tourist venue.

In the middle of the Kasbah in Rabat you can see some great doors made a long time ago.

These truncated columns together with the Hassan Tower are the remains of an incomplete mosque, as well as one of the most visited historical symbols of Rabat.

Commissioned in 1195, by order of the caliph Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur, the tower was supposed to be the largest minaret in the world together with the mosque, also designed to be the largest in the world, but in 1199 the work was interrupted due to of the death of the caliph.

As a result, the tower only reached 44 metres, or about half of the planned height of 86 metres, and the mosque was left with only a small part of the many walls and columns that needed to be raised.

On this site the ancient Romans set up the outpost of Sala Colonia, which became a thriving city with several monuments. In the 13th century the Merinid sultan Abu al Hassan built a necropolis on top of the Roman site and surrounded it with defensive walls. Many of the structures in Chellah were damaged or destroyed in an 18th century earthquake.
