This photo was taken in August 2018 high on the trail to Cabane Grand Mountet and shows the dramatic effect of climate change on Swiss glaciers. Roc Noir is in the middle distance (centre, right) with Glacier Cornier on its right flank and Glacier Durand on the left. The peaks behind are Obergabelhorn (left), Pointe de Zinal (directly behind Roc Noir) and Dent Blanche.

October feels like such a brave month.
Ushered in gently
but all the same awakening us
to our strength
Maybe it's the rawness
the crisp freshness
the scent of apples
the longing to get out walking
to capture the day
and the precious light
Or the feeling of coming into alignment
by nature of the birth sign days to come
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel -
This month also triggers memories of groiwing up, particularly at a time when music was beginning to play such a part in defining my developing personality, so I guess it must have been early adolescence when I tuned into Radio 1 one evening and listened to a fine selection of rock music during their weekly 'Rock-tober' show.
My late brother David and I were in the two opposite attic bedrooms at the top of the family house, so between us there was a lot of music being played.
This rock balance isn't as large as it looks. It's a trick of the lens and is in fact made of small stones found in the field on a walk in the hills behind my house.

A Larzac stack pierced with a natural tunnel from one side to the other. This vivid stack is found a little to the east of 'Le Rajal del Gorp', and so part of the greater zone so well known during the 'Paysans du Larzac' land rights and agricultural ethics movement.
The rocks appear to be closer to Mother Earth than many mineral landscapes as the stacks, arches and pythons grow from the ground like essential 'mushrooms', or weather-back from some past imagined system. A landscape for stories, and a landscape with several interesting dolmens and necropolis.
'Rajal del Gorp' is a cluster of stacks and arches rising out of grazed grassland. A dream-scape akin to Montpellier-le-Vieux, which is a little further to the north (here Romantic dreams wander past a long fallen city). Aside these well known mineral-scapes (Roquesaltes...) are myriad other stack and formations, often hidden in the garrigue/scrub, on knoll far from paths or within thin forest, and whilst other examples may not always demonstrate their complexity of verticality and form to a camera, the drama is and was there. I will cover some of these 'hidden' sites - all with links to prehistory, and refer to this image to illustrate the sheer drops and tight summits.
