1961 AEC RM Routemaster sub-frames with Park Royal Vehicles integral body and AEC 9.64 litre 6-cylinder diesel engine at the Deal and Walmer Festival of Transport, Kent, 8 September 2026. Registration No.WLT938, London Transport (Fleet No.RM938). After service with LT Central Area, it went to Magic Bus (Glasgow) and then Reading Mainline (as No.31).
The Routemaster was designed by AAM Durrant, C Curtis and D Scott of London Transport. Originally they were intended to replace London’s Trolleybuses (which finished in 1962) and older buses although eventually they replaced all previous designs. Four prototypes were built in 1956-58, two by the LT’s Chiswick Works with AEC engines, one by Weymann, and the fourth (a RMC coach) by Eastern Coach Works, the latter two having Leyland engines.
All production Routemasters were built by AEC/Park Royal, the first appearing in 1958 and the last in 1968. A total of 2,876 were built in a variety of versions: the standard, short RM with open rear platform, the lengthened RML (prototype in 1961, production 1965-68), the Green Line and London Country RMC coach (1962) with rear doors, the lengthened RCL Green Line coach (1965), the front entrance with doors RMF (1962) for Northern General, the front entrance with doors RMA (1964) for British European Airways, and the re-designed, experimental prototype, rear-engined, front entrance with doors FRM (1966), which never entered production.
Two types of AEC and one type of Leyland engine were installed and the design proved amenable to several different engines being retrofitted. The RM, RMC and RMA were 27’6” long, the RML, RCL and RMF 30’ long and the FRM 31’4” long. The Leyland-engined Routemasters were withdrawn first as non-standard even though LT had quite large numbers of them.
