For me, presentation is part of the work, a way to voice the maker’s thoughts of his subject. I don’t think it can add appeal... perhaps more like clarity. I have begun to set some of my photographs before the public in small galleries these days and I find that imagining how something you have worked on looks to others’ eyes is as difficult as knowing what we look like if we are not looking at ourselves.

Introduced from Eurasia this a bird of the high plains of western North America, I didn't know what it was when it showed up in my yard six years ago. Read about a few reports of these birds around the province when I realized what it was, speculation was they may have been raised from eggs as game birds and escaped. It's the national bird of both Pakistan and Iraq.

I realize it may sound innocent - perhaps naive - but one of the most surprising things to me about visiting Alaska was the rich color palette of the terrain. Despite being deep in Alaska, less than 250 miles from the Arctic Circle, the sun still holds its reign over the summer climate...and with nearly 24 hours of light, the vegetation has ample opportunity to grow.

Certainly, global warming, and glacial melt plays a role in seeing the deeply colored mountain range in the distance. It was surprising to me to learn that much of the green you see along the park road in Denali is vegetation growing atop the glaciers. All-in-all, I highly recommend taking the Kantishna bus tour (11-hours) in Denali, as it is the only method of getting deep into the park, with the opportunities to see as much of the geology, geography, .and wildlife possible.

While the namesake mountain is the primary calling card of this National Park, and rightfully so, it is only seen clearly by approximately 1/3 of the park's visitors, due to the near constant cloud cover. There is so much more, in terms of the vastness, grandeur, remoteness, and ecologic importance of this region to be experienced than simply the sight of Denali looming large above the subarctic plateau.

“Realize you are human. And that you make mistakes. That you can’t control everything. You need to understand that you are doing the best you can. Don’t blame yourself. You’re trying. And that’s enough.”

This is a very different matter from the mild geometry of brick and shadow or the interminable search for "texture." In his best photographs, landscape and season, earth and light, are revealed in a grand mutuality - a moment so precisely visualized in tone and composition as to be mathematical, and yet so revelatory of earthly beauty as to be something else entirely :-)

Never realized before that this "Chi-ca-go", "Chi-ca-go" is the onomatopoeia for the rallying cry of the California Quails… (Don't ask me to say this prase outloud, I am French after all ) Why not "Sa-cra-men-to" or "Vic-to-ria "… I don’t know. We moved into a more rural part of the Greater Victoria last December and I am so happy to see that we have a healthy population of California Quails around here. We initially had quite a few of them in our previous neighborhood in Saanich (we lioved there for 15 years) , but they all seem to disappear over the years. Apparently, they are heavily predated by the feral cats. The number I see here right now is very encouraging and I hope to be able to photograph them in the Winter, this would be especially nice on one of those rare snowy day. This one was caught on a trail in the woods around Metchosin not around our home. Unfortunately very high ISO.

Wandering through my gallery of previously unpublished images, I realized that I haven't yet managed to keep a promise I made to you.

I spent a night in the Italian Alps on my spring trip to Tuscany.

The morning after, from my pitch, I had a beautiful view of the mountains behind which the sun had just risen.

I put this photo back at the time because I couldn't wait to get to the photos I was actually there for.

In the meantime, so many new impressions have been added that the picture has slipped backwards. Now I'm bringing it up again because those craggy snowy rocks with the golden sky in the background are worth showing off.

Even if the viewing angle from my position is unfortunately not quite as ideal.

"People don't realize now is all there ever is; there is no past or future except as memory or anticipation in your mind." - Eckhart Tolle

When I really think about it, I see the truth in this quote. It sounds silly, but the thought started while I remembered my anticipation of these grape hyacinths I planted years ago. Years went by with only foliage popping up...no blooms. Every year I would wait, get super excited...and be super disappointed. This year, I was finally rewarded with some long awaited blooms.

So the question is...and not just about flowers, about anything we experience in life...what's the best part: the anticipation, that's full of hope and fantasies...or the memories that can be looked back on in thought and in pictures? I think it's some combination of both...reminiscing old adventures while anticipating new ones....

Please view large. Have a wonderful Thursday, my friends :-)

I realize this is something that most people wouldn't give a second glance to. My husband had been soldering and left his soldering clips and iron out near a window, and I just knew that I had to photograph them. I tried using four different lenses, and of course, I liked the image taken with my Pentacon the best :)

Happy Monday!

Many don’t realize that two thirds of Oregon is considered high desert, and that something like the Alvord Desert exists in our gorgeous state. One of the great things about Oregon is how diverse the geology and landscape is, and that you can visit the coast one day, and be in the Alvord Desert camping on the playa and staring up at the milky way the next. (from That Oregon Life)

The Alvord Desert is one of the largest playas in Oregon at six miles wide and eleven miles long. This remote playa sits at approximately 4,000 feet in elevation and is the perfect place to camp and enjoy nature.

I was told by another camper, that this crystalline substance on the lake is an alkaline salt deposit. What ever it is, it is crunchy and has a bit of sparkle when the sun catches it right.

This was taken very early in the morning. It was still quite cold but since you can drive out on the playa I kept jumping back in my car to get warm.

I just realized how long I haven't been to my beloved Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It's been a shocking 8 months now. I can not believe it.

Even though I've been to some beautiful places in the meantime, I really regret that I just didn't have the time.

To account for this and to remind myself that I would like to spend a day here again as soon as possible, I pull a previously unpublished photo from my archive.

The memory of that magnificent sunrise on mt. Lilienstein eases my pain somewhat and I hope the sight of the soft clouds floating over the forests and fields, bathed in an orange-pink light by the rising sun, brings you some joy.

I just realized the other day that I have taken quite a few photos of Father John Misty or Joshua Michael Tillman over the years but never posted any of them, which is just a thing that happens when you photograph several bands every day of a festival and have thousands of photos to go through after you haven't slept three nights straight. Anyway, Father John Misty puts on a good show and you can listen here:

i realize that i have not written much here over the past few years. and i am a writer, first and foremost. how odd, to have abandoned the opportunity to paint with words, with sounds and rhythms, offer a complement to the images. so ...

i suppose if you are the kind of person who has a predilection for words, then you will read further. if not, well, there are many images in this stream (including this one, i hope) that speak their own language. :)

i have walked this path, this sentiero. i have walked it, felt the cold autumn air wash over me, the warmth of the sun on my face. i have seen deer bounding across the crests of the hills and pheasants skittering across the surface of the deeply plowed earth, the clay, the crete senesi. i have stood in the midst of this great space, small, very small amidst the waves of autumn blues and greys. i have felt this place, experienced it. and forgotten it. it takes so little time for memories to fade. it takes a conscious effort to preserve them. i work diligently to live in the moment, so diligently at times that i forget. and while the present is the only reality, the past does provide its context, the future does offer some hope, and my memory, though fallible, is not simply a nostalgic salve to ease my aging mind. it's a part of who i am, what i am likely to become.

i have walked this path, seen it anew. and remembered.

I realize that it is probably not a "barn" (probably a tool shed or work area) but I liked the title anyway. I spotted this beautiful autumn scene near Woodstock, Vermont. The light and fall colors were incredible. (Edited in Photoshop and Lightroom)

I realized there were a lot more ducks in Saskatchewan than in Ontario or Quebec. But they are all equally skittish, being hunted everywhere, they don't easily approach human beings and I understand them.

Il y a tellement de canards en Saskakchewan, c'est vraiment impressionnant. Mais tous aussi peureux les uns des autres, ils ne se laissent pas approcher et ne s'approchent pas des êtres humains facilement non plus.

I realize now that my page has become a sort of defacto travel blog. But really, the whole point is to share images with the wonderful photographers and artists I meet here. Thanks for looking!

While driving along the Kings Canyon we realized it was only a couple hours to sunset. Importantly we had not decided any place where we wanted to get the sunset. For a change it was drizzling all afternoon and I was thinking of getting some nice post-rain clouds for the sunset. We finally decided to drive back to Sequoia and get the sunset at the Moro Rock. It was about an hour away from the Kings Canyon National Park.

As we arrived at the spot after climbing like 500 stairs, we were greeted with this awesome view. This is the west side where all the magic was happening.

The stairs go right to the top, an exasperating climb but completely worth the effort. At times a bit unsafe as the railings are absent, but no biggy! Excellent place to watch stars if you stay late on the top. This was taken from about half climb where there is a small balcony put out to watch the wavy valley.

The windy roads down the valley looked tempting. I instantly wanted to get the light trails of the cars driving back from the NP. I stayed up late and tried many exposures before I was sure about the settings. About 20min after the sunset I started to see the trials in 3-4min exposures but still the top of the photograph was too exposed. Had to wait a bit more for the light on the top to get less intense. The worry was the valley can get too dark! This was my third and final shot with a 6min exposure after the sun was completely down. Eventually, I realized its only a 15min window when the light is right to expose the shot right and get the trails distinct enough to stand out of the scene. The lights in the back is Visalia and Tulare.

Will post a few more shots from a day before.

Please don't post any graphics or awards. I just want to know what you think and highly appreciate any inputs to improve my photographs. Thank you for your favorites and comments!

Just realized that I had not posted an ice ribbon or Frost Flower this winter. Since they are not at my back door now i found one from 3 years ago that I had over looked. Probably should have saved it for Valentine's Day. if you have not seen this in nature then read up on it at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frost_flower

I only realized at the last minute it was world book day 02/03/23 so hastily browsed through my Asha pictures of her in costume and picked 3 pictures to upload to mark this occassion. I changed the background to a plan black in this picture as I just didn't have the time to do something more creative...lol. Happy world book day from Asha, Ashala and myself...

Yes, I realize this isn't an ice floe... but I liked the title anyway. I'm not even sure it makes the cut to be an iceberg, but lettuce pretend it does.
