This area is a complex of dust near the bright star Navi in Cassiopeia. The nebula glows with a combination of emission and reflection, giving a reddish and blueish white color. The whole complex of IC 59 and IC 63 also are in the Sharpless Catalog as Sh2-185.

Taken over two days while at Calstar 2013 in October. Most data was collected on the first night after I'd done polar alignment and while I was struggling with polar alignment and guiding of the GM8 for film work. The rest of the data was gathered piece-meal as I had shut down the GM8 and went piggyback for the film camera.

Standard setup for my digital work:

Stellarvue SV4 telescope using SSF6 flattener

Modified and Cooled Pentax K10D camera

No light pollution filter, just used the B+W 486 UV/IR filter. For a time I was using this filter to control NIR and UV on the full spectrum camera to control what I thought was out of focus light causing problems.

10 subexposures at 1200 seconds each giving 3 hours and 20 minutes of integration time.

Guiding and calibration with Maxim DL.

Stacked with DSS.

Processed with PixInsight: crop, DBE, masked stretch script, histogram stretch to reset black point, masked use of SCNR to control green, MT with a mask for brightest areas, finally unmasked curves to boost contrast a bit.

I had some challenges with flare on this data. Because the bright star Navi (Gamma Cassiopeiae) is near the center of the frame, it blazes at 2.5 magnitude, causing reflections to show up around the scene, specifically near HR266. The limited amount of data I had to use made it difficult to control the flare. Only by stacking with rigorous rejection routines (DSS Kappa Sigma K=1 x 49) was it possible to control the flare. Here are some notes from that effort. blog.migol.com/2013/10/calstar-2013-calibration-and-stack...

I have not taken a similar image recently that features such a bright star. I'm curious what the recent centering and alignment and flocking work I've been doing will change the behavior of the system.

Rotel RA-931 MKII mods

This is part of a modification that can be found in the Rotel RA-01 (or RA-02).

Modifications that can be seen in this picture:

R635, R636, originally 8k2 resistors, were replaced by jumpers (in RA-932 also)

R601, R602, originally 1k8 resistors, were replaced by 560 Ohm resistors

R523, R524, originally 22k resistors, were simply removed from the board

R522, R522, originally 33k resistors, were replaced by 470 Ohm resistors

R507, R508, originally 18k resistors, were replaced by 2k7 resistors

R505, R506, originally 1k resistors, were replaced by 470 Ohm resistors

Modifications in resistors R505...R508, change the op-amp gain from 19 to 6.74. This lower in gain seems to be compensated by lower resistor values R521, R522, R601 and R602, in the signal path afterwards, but they affect the tone control section if you intend to use it, because the volume will be lower, than with tone control off. In Rotel RA-01 and 02 ther's an op-amp (IC504 in RA-01, IC524 in RA-02 - MJM2114D) to solve this, with a gain set to 2.67.

Rotel RA-931 MKII mods

This is part of a modification that can be found in the Rotel RA-01, RA-02 and RA-932.

This picture in particular is just to give you an idea of the resistors placement, since they were later moved to the down side of the board, because the filter capacitors (C905, C906) I'm using, are way to big and stood over the resistors, though I tried to move them away.

This picture may serve those that didn't change the original capacitors or are using others with similar physical size.

Modifications that can be seen in this picture:

Jumpers J48, J49 were replaced by 12k 1% MRS25 resistors.

R633, R634 had one terminal disconnect from the original connection to the output, and were reconnected to feed the base of Q605, Q606. Originally should be a 8k2 resistor (R635, R636) in the way, but they were replaced by jumpers (can be seen in another picture)

Rotel RA-931 MKII mods

This is part of a modification that can be found in the Rotel RA-01, RA-02 and RA-932.

After experiencing both mods, inclusive simultaneously, my RA-931 MKII ended up only with the RA-01/RA-02/RA-932 part of the mods, presented here in green.

Circled is Quasar (QSO B0121+0327) at a magnitude of approximately +18.5. Radial velocity V (km/s) 84494 and redshift of 0.336. I used the Aladin Sky Atlas tool to incorporate my FIT image of Arp galaxy 157 and colour enhanced and overlay objects of interest, this is where I came across a QSO.

M33 at Calstar 2012

During the nights of September 13-14-15, I grabbed some frames of M33 while at Calstar. It was nicely placed and was a good subject while I was waiting for the California Nebula to rise.

19 total lights of 10 minutes at 400 ISO. Full-spectrum Pentax K10D with cooler. Sub temperatures ranged from 21-24C. Shot through the Stellarvue SV4.

Stacked with DSS 3.3.3 beta 47, pp with PI with DBE, masked stretch, histogram stretch and NR. The stack resulted in a pretty big mosaic, so the processing was done on a cropped frame. Annotation was done in PI. Final export brought into LR for upload.

Statue of Daniel O`Connell in the garden outside Melbourne's St. Patrick's Cathedral was unveiled 30 May, 1891.

The sculpture commemorates Irish patriot, Daniel O`Connell (1775 - 1847) also known as The Liberator.

O'Connell was the first Irish nationalist leader elected to the House of Commons, creating social reforms that helped the emancipation and recognition of Catholicism by the British Government.

The statue is the work of Thomas Brock A.R.A.

Sir Thomas Brock KCB RA (01 March 1847 – 22 August 1922) was an English sculptor and medallist, notable for the creation of several large public sculptures and monuments in Britain and abroad in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

NGC 772 (PGC 7525, and with NGC 770 = Arp 78)

Discovered (Nov 29, 1785) by William Herschel

A 10th-magnitude spiral galaxy (type SA(s)b) in Aries (RA 01 59 19.5, Dec +19 00 27)

Based on a recessional velocity of 2472 km/sec, NGC 772 is about 115 million light years away, well within widely varying redshift-independent distance estimates of 60 to 170 million light years. In any event, it must be at about the same distance as its elliptical companion, NGC 770 (that is, about 115 million light years away). Given that and its apparent size of 7.2 by 4.3 arcmin, it is about 240 thousand light years.
