Captain Harper's swag has gone up a bunch since getting her new job, but the amount of money she spends is still questionable at best.

Light cascading along Old Rag Mountain after a brief late-morning storm, revealing its unique topographic features. I'm always fascinated photographing in storm light as its unpredictability can open and close opportunities instantly. Being observant and reactive is vital, and while there are many failed attempts, it makes capturing something engaging that much more rewarding.

We wound up on Skyline Drive for our Sunday afternoon adventure and because it was later in the day it wasn't too crowded there. The mountain was in and out of cloud shadows and I've caught it just as the shadow moved off. This is the view of Old Rag Mountain from the Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. These browns and russets are the usual fall colors here with an occasional splash of red and some yellows. Oh...and the white dot in the field left of center? That is Anita sitting out there getting the "shot" of the day!! I could have edited her out of the scene, but I think it's funny so she stayed. If you follow the line of rocks off of old rag and down, that is where you would find my house! I posted a view from my place recently (see comment box below). Old Rag is 3,284 feet high and it takes approximately 7-8 hours to hike to the summit including a mile and half long rock scramble near the top. It is such a popular east coast hike that starting Jan. 1st the park will be limiting the number of people who can go up it and you have to schedule your climb. Me, I'm content to sit on my deck and take photos of people up on the rocks with my long lens! LOL Have a blessed week everyone!

I know I post a lot of photos of this mountain, but it's home and I like it! This view was taken in October. I may have a little trouble keeping up with Flickr over the next several days as my computer is going in the shop and I will be relying on my Ipad...... not ideal but it should help prevent computer withdrawal! LOL Have a great rest of the week everyone! :)

Sorry for the lack of sharpness, but I like the shot.

Rags for curtains

or curtains for rags

We had no plans of where to go yesterday which usually results in some of our best traveling time. Almost immediately after leaving my driveway we turned down this small country road to this cornfield and grabbed a shot of Old Rag in the morning light. We actually didn't trespass up into the field, not because it would have been trespassing (we didn't see That sign until we were about ready to leave!) but because we thought we might run into too much mud from a resent rain! LOL

I joined a group off of Facebook called 52Frames and each week of the year you have a challenge to take a photo with a certain subject. This week (my second!) was to take a photo of something interesting from where I live. Well, Old Rag is certainly the most famous and interesting thing! You can also choose to take on a second challenge and the one from this week was to shoot your subject at sunrise. So... Old Rag at sunrise today! Hardest thing about that challenge was actually getting up that early. LOL This was taken from an upstairs bedroom. Have a fantastic day everyone.

When journeys end and fires grow dim,

It rests beside the engine’s rim,

A tattered cloth, no more to brag—

Yet holds the soul of the oily rag.

He knows each bolt, each hissing seam,

A silent mate to fire and steam,

Through grease and grit its fibres brag—

The humble pride of the oily rag.

I took a ride on the back roads yesterday and caught this different view of Old Rag Mountain. This mountain is in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and usually I see it much closer! It was refreshing to see it from a different perspective.

To me this is the backside of Old Rag mountain because I live just on the other side of it. This view is from a pull over on Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park.
