On September 18th, the Canadian army invaded the Kahnawake reservation in a surprise attack. Ostensibly looking for guns in a clubhouse located on small Tekakwitha Island, dozens of men were deployed by Chinook helicopters. On the bridge, unarmed Mohawks confronted the army soldiers, who emerged from their helicopter wearing tear gas masks and immediately began firing volleys of chemicals at the civilians, both men and women, some of whom fell off into the water and were injured. In response, some young men began throwing stones at the soldiers. In the virtual absence of media (I and a TV cameraman, there entirely by chance, were originally the sole media present), soldiers gun butted several Mohawk youths. More army men and civilian Mohawks of all ages and sexes converged on the Island, to face each other in what was a tense stand-off, fortunately defused by some astute, diplomatic Mohawk leaders who eventually managed to calm things down.
As more media and soldiers arrived, the Mohawks regrouped in another location and tensions began to escalate once more. Shots were fired and some natives managed to get hold of a couple of the army men and exact revenge through severe beatings. No-one really understood the justification for the original invasion, but army personnel were later seen emerging from the clubhouse holding one dismantled rifle and (according to a Mohawk who may have embellished the story) several cases of beer, which were allegedly loaded on the helicopter. The military claimed to have seized 47 weapons but as this is a hunting community, even if this were the case, it was not necessarily cause for a confrontation of this magnitude.

A Manitoba Native and Peace camp protester playing Warrior-tourist! A strange circumstance... two Western Canadian Natives from the Oka Peace Camp had suddenly appeared at my door in Montreal, the result of a casual invitation. They decided to visit Kahnawake on this day, to buy souvenir t-shirts and experience a Mohawk community, as they were feeling frustrated at being unable to join the Warriors in Kanehsatake. To get into Kanehsatake, one needed an Emergency measures pass from the S.Q., which as accredited media I had managed to secure. Kahnawake only required passing through the 2 checkpoints set up- one manned by the S.Q. and the other by Mohawks.
In Kahnawake, one of my western guests spotted a shot-up golf course sign and, suddenly pulling a "mask" out of his pocket, asked me to take a photo of him beside it! The choice of the golf course sign was in reference to the incident which had sparked the Oka crisis- the proposed expansion of a 9 hole golf course in Kanehsatake, as Oka is also known, on disputed land which contained a Native cemetery and Sacred pine grove.
We were just about to leave the Mohawk side of the checkpoint and head for the SQ to return to Montreal, when the Mohawk guard suddenly received a communique on his walkie-talkie that the Canadian army had invaded the community, transporting troops in a chinook, and the bridge to the island was being teargassed. We immediately turned around and went back in, just in time to receive the second volley of gas! When reporters finally showed up, they were perplexed that I had somehow received the "scoop" in advance! I understandably didn't bother to explain!

Teargassing of the Bridge. I had to change film at this point, opening the back, and my subsequent negatives were affected strangely by the chemicals- almost unprintable at the time and when I last checked 10 years later, in steady decline. Thank you Photoshop for your magic wand- I've managed to clean up some impossible damage and present some photos in this set which I've never shown before. I was one of two non-Natives present on the Bridge, and was at one point surrounded by a group of frantic and angry women, who shouted at me,
"YOU GO BACK TO YOUR PEOPLE AND YOU SHOW THEM, YOU TELL THEM WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO US!!!"
I have rarely felt so acutely "Other" and must admit, I would not have readily identified many of the people I saw there on the bridge with me as being of Native origin, but it was evident to them that I was NOT. I looked across the water towards the Island at what were allegedly "MY people"- more resembling an invading mass of locusts with guns, advancing through a cloud of smoke- (the gas masks made them appear decidedly insect-like), and I shouted back in all sincerity,
"They're NOT MY PEOPLE! MY people wouldn't do something like this!"
I thought, it doesn't matter what you stand for, what you believe in, what you strive towards all of your life. Racism erases all of that and reduces you to the colour of your skin or assumed heritage and so you are judged. We all are. I wondered it THEY (the army) thought of me at that moment as one of THEIR people. Not likely they saw a difference. I had just been targeted by the Montreal police that same summer for my role as the photographer in the SexGarage incident (see my other set), been beaten twice, threatened and arrested in a demo against police violence, so was not feeling particularly aligned with the military at that moment.

L."Wizard" and R."Viper" aka photographer Linda Dawn Hammond - the name Wizard bestowed upon me...

"Wizard", one of the warriors, named me "Viper" after I had words with an aggressive Macleans writer in No-Man's land, which continued past the Mohawk barricade as that journalist attempted to plant an idea with the Warriors that I was an SQ agent, AS IF!! It later turned out that the SQ had made an error when they issued my press pass, which at that moment I was unaware of. I had asked 3 media I'd previously worked for as a freelance photographer- Macleans, NOW magazine and the Suburban, for accreditation. The latter was actually the one which came though for me, but the SQ had erroneously printed Macleans on my emergency measures pass, which of course I was happy about as I would actually get paid! The Macleans journalist said I didn't work for Macleans (though I'd shot an event at the film festival for them that week), he'd never seen me before. Well, I told him I'd never seen him before either. He then tried to order me, "You're not going ahead. You're not going back... you're staying here!", essentially trying to condemn me to the purgatory of No-Man's Land? I thought he was crazy, and said I would confirm with the SQ when I passed by their office later (miles out of town), but he wouldn't accept that. So I told him to fuck off. Someone tried to warn me to be careful of the journalist, telling me he's prone to violence. "Yeah, wouldn't want to hurt him!" I said as I brushed pass and crossed the Mohawk line. He ran after me and said, "She isn't who she says she is. For all I know, she works for the SQ!" He could have got me shot, as the youngest Warrior, age 15, was unnerved, his hand shaking as he held his weapon. "Do you think she is?" he asked the older Warriors. I managed to defuse the situation, addressing the Warrior who appeared to be most in charge, which was Wizard, pointing out, "Look at me, and now look at HIM, and you tell me who is more likely to be SQ?! The journalist then started to question the Mohawk warriors' authority to make that decision, on THEIR side of the barricade, at which point he lost all credibility. "Viper" was a definite compliment, as Wizard's exact words later were. " When I saw you behind the barricade, I said to myself, "This woman would probably make a good warrior. I name you Viper!" My dad, when I told him, said "I suppose you're proud of yourself?" and I replied with an emphatic, "YEP!"

MCGILL U. held an OKA crisis 15th anniversary event on their grounds. Remembering on July 11, 2005. Photo © Linda Dawn Hammond / IndyFoto.com 2005 Bow Jacobs is from the Six Nations reserve and describes himself as homeless by choice. He stood proudly beside the Mohawk flag, symbol of defiance and pride. Many believe that the Oka conflict brought together the disparate tribes and helped reclaim their Native identities. Bow infuses it with a sense of irony. He is wearing the mask made famous by the Kanehsatake warriors, in emulation I assume. (Bow is not a Mohawk and though a sympathizer at the time, was not an active participant at Oka) Yet he wears a Tshirt offering his body For Rent, and holds out a hat as if asking for a handout. There are many ways to read this and I was somewhat disconcerted when he took up this pose as I would never have asked him to do this. The fact that he chose to means it comes from a position of strength, not desperation or subservience. And yet it speaks volumes on the way natives are seen and treated in this society. I took the photo because it was what he wanted to say; read it as you will. We all do, anyway.

Minister Lilianne Ploumen (Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) reist van zondag 9 tot en met donderdag 13 november naar Congo en Rwanda. Met de minister reizen ruim 20 bedrijven mee uit diverse sectoren: bruggenbouwers, producenten van paspoorten en andere identiteitsbewijzen en tuinbouwondernemers.
Het is de tweede keer dat Ploumen Congo en Rwanda bezoekt. Ploumen: ‘De handelsmissie laat zien dat bedrijven economische kansen zien in deze landen en dat we hun inzet om investeringen en handel aan te trekken serieus nemen. Nederland ondersteunt in het Grote Merengebied een regionaal programma gericht op voedselzekerheid, rechten van vrouwen, veiligheid en rechtsorde en waterbeheer.’
Eerste reisdoel is Kinshasa. De minister zal daar ontmoetingen hebben met vertegenwoordigers van Congolese politiek (onder andere de minister-president), met het maatschappelijk middenveld en het hoofd van MONUSCO, de VN-vredesmacht in Congo. Ook zal zij het bedrijf Quickprint bezoeken, mede gefinancierd door het Nederlandse bedrijf XSLM.
Vervolgens reist de minister naar het oosten van Congo. Daar bezoekt ze een conflictvrije (coltan)mijn waar lokale krijgsheren geen greep hebben op de opbrengst. Verder gaat ze naar een voormalig oorlogsgebied waar de lokale bevolking inmiddels is teruggekeerd, landbouwontwikkeling plaatsvindt en lokale politie wordt getraind, mede gefinancierd door Nederland. Ploumen: ‘Nederland heeft zijn nek uitgestoken door innovatieve initiatieven op het gebied van conflictvrije grondstoffenketens in oostelijk Congo te steunen. Dit past in mijn visie op het gebied van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen en inclusieve groei.’
In Rwanda spreekt Ploumen met haar collega’s van financiën en justitie. Vervolgens bezoekt ze het Kivumeer project waar duurzame energie wordt opgewekt en een speciale economische zone waar Nederlandse bedrijven actief zijn. Op de agenda staat ook de nieuwe luchthaven Kanombe en de mogelijke rol Nederlandse betrokkenheid bij de bouw daarvan. Op handelsgebied staat verder nog een bijeenkomst met de top 10 van Rwandese bedrijven gepland. Voorts zal de minister zich in Rwanda op de hoogte stellen over de landhervormingen in Musanze en een Unicef voedselprogramma in Muhanga.

Ploumen met handelsmissie naar Democratische Republiek Congo en Rwanda

Minister Lilianne Ploumen (Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) reist van zondag 9 tot en met donderdag 13 november naar Congo en Rwanda. Met de minister reizen ruim 20 bedrijven mee uit diverse sectoren: bruggenbouwers, producenten van paspoorten en andere identiteitsbewijzen en tuinbouwondernemers.
Het is de tweede keer dat Ploumen Congo en Rwanda bezoekt. Ploumen: ‘De handelsmissie laat zien dat bedrijven economische kansen zien in deze landen en dat we hun inzet om investeringen en handel aan te trekken serieus nemen. Nederland ondersteunt in het Grote Merengebied een regionaal programma gericht op voedselzekerheid, rechten van vrouwen, veiligheid en rechtsorde en waterbeheer.’
Eerste reisdoel is Kinshasa. De minister zal daar ontmoetingen hebben met vertegenwoordigers van Congolese politiek (onder andere de minister-president), met het maatschappelijk middenveld en het hoofd van MONUSCO, de VN-vredesmacht in Congo. Ook zal zij het bedrijf Quickprint bezoeken, mede gefinancierd door het Nederlandse bedrijf XSLM.
Vervolgens reist de minister naar het oosten van Congo. Daar bezoekt ze een conflictvrije (coltan)mijn waar lokale krijgsheren geen greep hebben op de opbrengst. Verder gaat ze naar een voormalig oorlogsgebied waar de lokale bevolking inmiddels is teruggekeerd, landbouwontwikkeling plaatsvindt en lokale politie wordt getraind, mede gefinancierd door Nederland. Ploumen: ‘Nederland heeft zijn nek uitgestoken door innovatieve initiatieven op het gebied van conflictvrije grondstoffenketens in oostelijk Congo te steunen. Dit past in mijn visie op het gebied van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen en inclusieve groei.’
In Rwanda spreekt Ploumen met haar collega’s van financiën en justitie. Vervolgens bezoekt ze het Kivumeer project waar duurzame energie wordt opgewekt en een speciale economische zone waar Nederlandse bedrijven actief zijn. Op de agenda staat ook de nieuwe luchthaven Kanombe en de mogelijke rol Nederlandse betrokkenheid bij de bouw daarvan. Op handelsgebied staat verder nog een bijeenkomst met de top 10 van Rwandese bedrijven gepland. Voorts zal de minister zich in Rwanda op de hoogte stellen over de landhervormingen in Musanze en een Unicef voedselprogramma in Muhanga.

He stands proudly beside the Mohawk flag, symbol of defiance and pride. Many believe that the Oka conflict brought together the disparate tribes and helped reclaim their Native identities.

SEXGARAGE. Montreal party attacked by 32 presumed homophobic cops (if one can judge by the verbal slurs they cast at the people they began beating), July 14, 1990, very close to the action as this is a 28mm lens and full frame, and the last photo I took that morning, before one of the police came up behind me and knocked my legs out with his stick, causing me to fall, while another simultaneously hit me across my camera/chest area. My flash went flying, but I rolled on my stomach and throw my Nikon camera up the hill in the direction of running friends, one of whom managed to grab it before the cops- and so these photos were saved. The cops meanwhile had pounced on my flash, believing it to be the camera and film they were evidently after, so I also got away, and the photographs were published in 2 major papers that morning! *In 1990 I photographed the 'Oka Crisis" (also known as Kanehsatake) as a journalist, which is where I first saw Alanis Obomsawin, in the process of making her film, Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, which screened on this final day of the festival. I wore my Blockade sweatshirt in her honour and am so glad to finally make her acquaintance after all these years! Behind The Barricades: OKA
Photos I took of what became known as the Oka Crisis in 1990. July 11, 2020 marks the 30th anniversary.
Photos © Linda Dawn Hammond / IndyFoto.com '90 Mohawk Warriors guard their barricade, erected during an armed struggle over the intended expansion of a golf course onto disputed land which included a Native cemetery.
The person on the left was allegedly the youngest warrior and only 15 years old. On the right is "Wizard". After the army took the perimeter, they seized this log and brought it back to their barracks as a trophy. No-one seems to know where it went after that.

THREE PART BODYSERIES © Linda Dawn Hammond is a photographic portrait series produced in Montreal between 1988 -1994. It consists of 42 triptychs. It began as an attempt to document a very eclectic group of the photographer's friends, but soon developed into an exploration of fetishism and the designation of the body as the medium through which identity is proclaimed. It is the third in a series exploring love and relationships- in which one returns to the Self, only to be disassembled.
To delve deep within the psyche and proclaim one's truth in the face of adversity is a demonstration of courage and integrity.

Kanehsatake, Quebec, Photos © Linda Dawn Hammond / IndyFoto.com August 29, 1990. Mohawk Warriors guard their barricade, erected during an armed struggle over the intended expansion of a golf course onto disputed land which included a Native cemetery.
This was allegedly the youngest warrior and only 15 years old. After the army took the perimeter, they seized this log and brought it back to their barracks as a trophy.
