Ein Leben für die Krone.

Es gibt viele Königinnen, aber es gab nur eine Queen.

08. September 2022

A life for the crown.

There are many queens, but there was only one queen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom from 6 February 1952 until her death on 8 September 2022 (aged 96). Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the second longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country. At the time of her death, Elizabeth was Queen of 14 other Commonwealth realms in addition to the UK.
On September 8th, we had decided earlier in the day to visit Buckingham Palace. We decided we didn't want to fight he crowds during the changing of the guard, and thought it would be fun to photograph at night. Before heading to the palace, we stopped for some gelato close to the Victoria tube station, which is not far from Buckingham Palace. While we were enjoying our gelato, I received a notification that the queen had just passed away. We were shocked like everyone else. Should we still go to the Palace? We decided to go. We hopped on a bus that took us half way there, then walked the rest of the way. As we got closer, we became part of a swarm of people heading to and from the Palace. Oh, and it started to rain. By the time we got there, we were two of literally thousands of people there to show their respect to the only queen most had ever known. But it was crazy. I snapped this photo with my cell phone - Wanda snapped a few as well - then we decided to leave - simply too many people and too much rain. We started walking back to the Victoria station, but the side of the road we were on was blocked off, so I made the decision to try to go to the Green Park station instead. Being dark, my navigation skills were challenged, and we ended up taking the "scenic" route there. By the time we got there, they had started turning people away because the station was over-crowded. We somehow got in though, and although we had to take a less direct route to our hotel, we ended up getting back soaked but safe and exhausted. Admittedly, this is not a very good photo, but it's the only one that I took that turned out at all. And as much as it was a wild night, it was significant to be there... to be part of history... and to mourn with our friends from the UK on the loss of their Queen...
I ended up going back the next morning, and it was a much calmer scene - so many flowers - but the people numbered in the hundreds instead of the thousands. Lots of media there as well - all looking for a story. Over the next few days as we rode the London Underground, we would see people - families - carrying bouquets of flowers and sometimes dressed in black - obviously heading to Buckingham Palace to show their respects to the deceased queen. It was certainly an interesting time to be in London - who knew all this would happen when we planned the trip almost a year ago.
sadness and silence
Balmoral Castle is a large estate in Aberdeenshire on the River Dee. Queen Elizabeth II died there on September 8th, 2022.
In recent years the Tower of London has really made great use of the land immediately surrounding the high walls, and this year is no exception.
Known as Superbloom, a wild-flower meadow has been created to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Several years in the planning the project included bringing in 10,000 tonnes of soil to landscape and flatten the ground, before sewing some 20 million wild-flower seeds. The sewing has been timed to generate a display in June that runs through to September.
This (and one or two other takes) was unashamedly influenced by some of Klimt's work.
Apologies for lack of activity recently - got a bit jaded with trains and Flickr generally, but will be attempting to catch up over the next few days.
A collage of photos taken before 7 am the day after the queen passed away. The chaos of the night before was gone, with only flowers, a few mourners, and news media left in their place. The note above that says "I love the Queen" was written by a 5 year old. The paper was wet from the rain, making parts of it hard to read. But the message was pure, simple and beautiful. Nothing more needed to be said.
The last farewell, with tears from heaven.
As Summer to Fall,
The Seasons Returneth,
Till next Spring repose.
The biscuits, finger sandwiches, chocolates and teas are gone. Conversation with Colonial Secretariat friends ended. I finished singing "God Save the Queen" and am left with this centre piece cradled in Royal Doulton china. Beautiful though the flowers are, it's time to start thinking about a Referendum on Canada's future. Shall we become a Republic when Prince Charles ascends the throne or remain a Constitutional Monarchy tied to a British colonial past? Question to which I don't yet have a definitive answer in my own mind, but would like it thought through national wide.
I'm no monarchist, in fact far from it, but no one can deny that the Queen was a force for good in this troubled world that we now inhabit.
Today is a very sad day. Queen Elizabeth II who has ruled for the whole of my life, and who, at the age of 21, dedicated her life to serving her country has died aged 96, still serving her country up to the end. RIP
Thank you for taking the time to visit, comment, fave or invite. I really appreciate them all.
Understated but heartfelt celebrations today for a remarkable achievement by a remarkable lady. One of a kind for sure.
I had to watch it on TV - what a wonderful tribute - so beautifully done! It's not too bad for an iPhone picture taken from the telly....
Year of the crowning of Elizabeth II
Picture by Cecil Beaton 1953
So after seeing SO many amazing images on currency, I decided to create a new image to add to the group. Thanks everyone for the inspiration.
Macro Mondays - Currency
It is now less than a week until the Coronation of King Charles III, and people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth move into the new Carolean Age.
Imagine my delight when I recently received my first Carolean Era stamp on a letter from a friend in Worcestershire, featuring His Majesty's profile. Not only was it interesting to see His Majesty in profile on a stamp, but also to note that this stamp makes a break in royal tradition, where the rule is that he should be facing in the opposite direction to his mother.
Whether Her Late Majesty liked rule breakers or not, I am sure she would be very proud of King Charles as he takes up the reigns of ruling and walks in his mother's footsteps, but decidedly to the beat of his own drum.
Our first day without our Queen..
No more coins will be issued with Queen Elizabeth’s head on them and the new coins will bear that of the new King Charles. The Royal Mint will already have had designs for that head well in place for years I expect and I believe that before long we will see that new head.
All coins are made of metal with the vast majority being of a metal alloy, that is a metal that is a mixture of other metals. This one was a Queen Elizabeth silver jubilee coin from 1977.
For Crazy Tuesday, theme today of ‘Made of Metal’.
this is a close up shot of the Jubilee Beacon in Campbell Park, Milton Keynes (mirrored and coloured)
💔we loved you
After finishing a nice morning walk with Tidda, I came upon this unusual and surprising scene of a lone piper playing by the sea. I don't know for sure, but I have to think that this almost certainly related to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
He sounded very good.
I woke early this Friday morning here in Australia to a view of rain and leaden skies. Fitting and appropriate indeed as I listened with heavy heart to the radio news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
I am British by birth but no Royalist. However, I do have great respect for her as perhaps the 'ultimate public servant'; her quiet dignity, selflessness and unwavering dedication.
She has been a constant and an anchor throughout all of my life and now as her life and passing becomes part of the great annals of history and time, I know she will be sorely missed by many far and wide.
May she rest in peace.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse commonly referred to as Holyrood Palace or Holyroodhouse, or Holyrood Castle, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, at the opposite end to Edinburgh Castle, Holyroodhouse has served as the principal royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century, and is a setting for state occasions and official entertaining. Queen Elizabeth II spends one week in residence at Holyroodhouse at the beginning of each summer, where she carries out a range of official engagements and ceremonies. Source: Wikipedia
Le palais de Holyroodhouse, communément appelé palais de Holyrood ou Holyroodhouse, ou château de Holyrood, est la résidence officielle du monarque britannique en Écosse. Situé au bas du Royal Mile à Édimbourg, à l'opposé du château d'Édimbourg, Holyroodhouse est la principale résidence royale d'Écosse depuis le XVIe siècle et sert de cadre à des événements officiels et à des divertissements officiels. This coin is 18mm in diameter and features a relief portrait of the late Queen by Jody Clark (initials JC are visible below the neckline).
To create the shot, I used a Fujinon ES90 enlarging lens on a Kopil Bellowsmat at almost full extension and aperture of f/8 (please ignore the EXIF lens data, I didn't set up the camera correctly). This is a tilt-shift bellows, but I only used the shift functionality (to help align the subject in the frame). The coin was lit with a combination of mobile phone torch and reflected light.
In PP, I have edited the black point and cloned out some dust before increasing the colour saturation. I did consider B&W, but it just didn't seem to work as well with the low-key theme.
Public in Scotland paying their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The heavens may shed their tears. Frail and very ill she stood smiling at the appointment of her 15th and last Prime Minister two days before her passing. In memory of a caring strong lady who deserves respect. And one must not underestimate her heir. God Safe the King.
Together with the cats, I wish to once again Congratulate, Queen Elizabeth on her Platinum Celebration.
Happy Caturday, my Flickr Friends
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
"Uneasy is the head that wears a crown" - Henry IV Part Two - William Shakespeare.
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for Friday the 13th of January is "crown". I immediately thought of the beautiful silver-plated replica of the Imperial state crown worn by my limited edition Queen's Platinum Jubilee Commemorative Bear from Merrythought in Britain. It sits against a background of hand made and stenciled paper of crowns in gold. The attention to detail of the replica of the Imperial state crown is wonderful, and although small, it is remarkably heavy, so maybe the Shakespearean quote, which often now phrased as 'heavy is the head the wears the crown" is correct. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.
On 2nd June 2022, a beacon was lit on the roof of Kinnaird Head lighthouse to mark the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. The lighthouse lens was also turned on for the evening.
Kinnaird Head was the first lighthouse to be established by the Northern Lighthouse Board in 1787. It is now part of the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.
The Platinum Jubilee marks 70 years of a monarch's reign. Queen Elizabeth II is the first British monarch to reach the milestone.
As a modern monarch, Her Majesty Queen Lilibet, Queen of all the Bears, knows that she needs to communicate with her bear subjects all over the world, so every year she releases new photographs. With each one she includes an important message to all bears, encouraging them to love their mummies and daddies and give them lots of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses. She also encourages them to help one another and be kind to all those they meet in their lives. In today’s world, messages like this remind all of us that good manners, love and care for one another are important to demonstrate every day.
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 28th of April is "queen;. This theme left me with many options, but the one that immediately sprung to mind was to use my Merrythought Queen's Platinum Jubilee Commemorative Bear. Made by Merrythought in Britain, she has been hand made from customised, platinum-tipped diamond white mohair plush, and she has our Late Queen's blue eyes and a hand stitched nose and enigmatic smile. Her left paw is embroidered with the years 1952 and 2022, in between which sits the royal crown. She is wearing a coronation robe of purple velvet, featuring satin lining, ermine trim, and extensive golden embroidery. Keeping true to the original Imperial robe, it is accessorised with two satin bows and luxury Italian tassels to finish. Her crown is a silver-plated replica of the Imperial state crown, which Her Late Majesty wore as she left Westminster Abbey after her coronation. It is studded with twenty six gemstones, has a purple velvet lining and white ermine trim. Her Majesty the Late Queen's Platinum Jubilee Commemorative Bear is number 557 of a worldwide limited edition of 1952. I hope you like Her Majesty as my choice for the theme this week, and that she makes you smile.
The wallpaper in the background is hand made and printed paper that I acquired from a specialist paper supplier.
I would like to acknowledge and thank my Flickr Friend Red Stilletto www.flickr.com/photos/thevixen/ for inspiring me to use a wide white frame. This design elements she uses to create great impact with her own images.
