This one is absolutely amazing. (But it is not the only case of retro ignorance.)
There is this one guy or gal in every crowd.
The one in a group who desperately seeks attention and recognition. The one who wants to be part of the gang by making any attempt at tagging along, making any possible statement and claim deemed "hip" in the vain hope to, somehow, someday, finally get some recognition. But he (or she) always gets everything so consistently wrong that you can only feel pity for the embarassing display of undignified behavior and the relentless submission to deep humiliation.
In this fine example of such behavior, Philip Morris, the owner of the cigarette brand "L&M", paid, maybe underpaid, but certainly carelessly assigned someone obviously under the age of 30 to say for them:
Hey, you cool people over 30 out there! Just for the record, your world and our world match perfectly!! Far out!!!
But what we cool people over 30 all hear is only some backward masked message saying:
Congratulations, you have just discovered our blatant ignorance of your world. Please send your derision to Old Upper Management, Philip Morris International, 120 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017
The interesting twist about this blunder is that Philip Morris appears not to be heeding the third item of its three self-declared marketing principles.
And to add the icing on the cake of irony: This ad, catering, among other people, to meanwhile aging hippies, is about smoking. Is this maybe an obscurely clever subliminal (haha) suggestion to consider an alternative to old habits?
Anyway, I feel tempted to suggest to upper management and to the board of directors of the corporation to save money by firing everyone whose hands this abomination has passed through.
Or, in the spirit of the times the ad alludes to, chip off part of their alotted marketing budget and spend it more wisely on sending them to a reeducation camp teaching proper addressing of target demographics and common research practice in marketing for ignorant professionals.
I would gladly take good corporation money for readjusting the attitude of some of their marketing airheads out there. Or just for managing quality assurance, for issuing them reality checks, or for bullshit bingoing their public relations output.
And to all young, aspiring, yet pathetically clueless creative directors and photoshop artists out there under the age of 30:
YOUR NOTION OF "RETRO" IS ALL WRONG!!!
Now throw those baggy pants away, get some decently cut jeans and return to live under a rock hiding in shame, and don't come back until you have developed a notion of cultural history.
