The Python is undergoing a full renovation between January and March 2018. After about 36 years it was time to renovate this famous roller coaster. Perhaps one of the first roller coasters in Europe that was considered cultural heritage. The last ride was made on the 5th of January and the demolition started on Monday 8th January. After one week more than half of the tracks were dismantled.
The new Python (lets call it Python verson 2.0) is sheduled to re-open the last week of March or early April.
Python
Python is a double-loop Corkscrew roller coaster in the Efteling amusement park in the Netherlands. When it started operation, it was the largest steel roller coaster on the European mainland.
With Python, Efteling started the implementation of a new strategy: development from a fairy-tale forest into an all-round amusement park. This change led to many problems with the local community. Environmentalists tried to get the building permit withdrawn, and the park's neighbors feared more problems arising from growing visitor numbers. Because of the likely noise pollution, the highest court of public justice ordered the construction to be stopped. After some time, construction could recommence, but legal problems continued for several more years.
In 2005 the trains were replaced by Kumbak Coasters designed by Karel Willemen and in December 2011 with Vekoma MK1212 trains. In mid January 2012, the python was fitted with new carriages. These new cars have a new set of restraints which accommodate the needs of riders large and small. There is a flexible over the shoulder strap which is not unlike those on accelerator coasters such as Kingda ka but slightly thicker. Over these are metal bars for riders to hold on to and to give support to the under straps. Also, the cars have been fitted with wheels that allow a smoother ride.

Python / Python sebae
Shot at the reptile farm near Kartong/Bambia. The shots of the snakes are not spectacular, as pictures. I put them here on flickr because these snakes are so impressive, at least to me.
The Pythons in Karton were kept in a "small house" wich could be entered. So did we. In front of us we saw three big ones. The largest apr. 6 meter. We were told that they would not attack: they look at the size of their prey; when to big they don't do anything... While taking position to capture the one on the photo I heard sissling next to my knee... hmm time to say goodbey to the python's. Outside I had a closer look through one of the windows, there were 5 guys crawling round.

This is one of the world's largest species of snakes,with adults reaching lengths of over 6 m (20 ft). The typical adult length is 4.8 m (16 ft) and rumors of specimens over 6 m (20 ft) are generally considered reliable, but larger specimens have never been confirmed.
Southern African Python (Python sebae natalensis)
The color pattern is typically brown, with olive and tan irregular blotching, fading to white on the underside. At a glance, they can be easily mistaken for the Burmese python, P. m. bivittatus, but the two species are not closely related.
Africa’s largest snake (3) (4), the African rock python (Python sebae) has a long, stout body, patterned with blotches that vary in colour between brown, olive, chestnut and buffy yellow, often joining up in a broad, irregular stripe. The triangular head has many sharp, backwardly curved teeth and is marked on top with a dark brown “spear-head” outlined in buffy yellow. Under the eye is a distinctive triangular marking, known as a subocular mark. Like all pythons, the scales of the African rock python are small and smooth, and those around the lips possess heat-sensitive pits, which are used to detect warm-blooded prey, even in the dark. Pythons also possess two functioning lungs, unlike more ‘advanced’ snakes which have only one, and also have small, visible pelvic ‘spurs’, believed to be the vestiges of hind limbs.

The new Python looks fresh again and it runs smoothly through the loopings, cork screws and Bayern curves. Good idea of De Efteling to keep this iconic roller coaster which can be considered cultural heritage for the Netherlands and neighboring countries including France.
Operation Python
At the beginning of 2018 a large part of the attraction will be demolished and then re-built. That is the first time that the Efteling does that at a major attraction.
Only the lift, the station and the foundation are retained. The remainder of the runway is cut into pieces of five meters with a cutting torch, then a crane is loaded onto a truck and then disposed of together with the disassembled uprights as old iron. A steel company in Belgium makes the new job and stands for the Python. The new Python will look as good as possible on the old track, only the supports on which the rails will rest will be round instead of square.
The rebuilding of the attraction will take the most time. The bolted connections are assembled with a team of about 30 people. The installation of the loops will take place in four large parts of every eleven meters. This is followed by a twelve-day test program, whereby deliberate errors are made to test the emergency stop systems. Project leader of this "Operation Python" is Frank Poels.

Reticulated Python at a cheesy tourist snake show. I saw the same show on my first visit to Bangkok nearly 20 years ago. Photos from that trip show the same floor covering, the same 'show', and hopefully, the same handlers. Still a sad place though, but hard to avoid if you take a longtail boat trip around the Thonburi klongs.

Lunch time! Another huge Burmese Pythom makes quick work of an unfortunate chicken. You can see the poor chicken's feet dead centre. The snake'shead is the triangular patch dead centre, just above the chicken. In the wild, a chicken would be like eating a couple of Smarties for the huge snake. Although these critters prefer to eat small prey, they can and do take down large prey like antelope, pigs and the like. The can swallow prey upto four times their diameter. Burmese Pythons are now proving to be a nuisance in the USA where pet owners, who had bought them as babies to keep as pets were unprepared for the huge size they grow to and have been randomly releasing them in the wild. Hundreds of formerly captive Burmese Pythons are now crawling all around the USA where they kill and eat deer and other native species and although they do not generally bite humans, are a big hazard to humans as well, especially as they can swallow a small child. Python molurus bivittatus
A downright stunning adult male found crossing a canal during a crocodile survey in the Everglades. This snake had just shed and was downright stunning.
The reticulated python is Asia's largest snake and the longest species in the world. it is a highly common snake occurs mostly in lowland rainforest, plantations, agricultural areas and even in urban habitats.
The Burmese python (Python bivittatus) is one of the five largest species of snakes in the world (about the third-largest as measured either by length
or weight). It is native to a large variation of tropic and subtropic areas
of South and Southeast Asia.
They are often found near water and are sometimes semi-aquatic,
but can also be found in trees. Wild individuals average 3.7 m long,
but have been known to reach 5.74 m .
Burmese pythons are mainly nocturnal rainforest dwellers. When young, they are equally at home on the ground and in trees, but as they gain girth, they tend to restrict most of their movements to the ground. They are also excellent swimmers, being able to stay submerged for up to half an hour. Burmese pythons spend the majority of their time hidden in the underbrush.
Like all snakes, the Burmese python is carnivorous. Its diet consists
primarily of appropriately sized birds and mammals. The snake uses its
sharp rearward-pointing teeth to seize its prey, then wraps its body
around the prey, at the same time contracting its muscles, killing
the prey by constriction. It is often found near human habitation due
to the presence of rats, mice, and other vermin as a food source.
Burmese pythons are often sold as pets Although this species has a reputation for docility, they are very powerful animals, capable of inflicting severe bites or even killing a keeper by constriction.

But I was fortunate: Two weeks later an old priest found me half strangled between the rocks… They flew me out in a helicopter to Darwin Royal Hospital where I spent the following 5 months in intensive care… Last week they brought me back to the same spot in the bush, but the Python was gone…”
